Our Branch provides lifelong support to anyone who has ever served, in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force and their dependants. We also give support to those who has been in the Merchant Navy, Seafarers, Fishermen and their dependants, and British Airways staff past and present. Our main role is seeking welfare benevolent grants on behalf of clients who reside in the 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland. They can arrange anything from household goods, funeral costs, mobility aids or other general needs. Legal fees are not considered. We would advise clients to seek state and local benefits by signposting them to the relevant agencies.
What is a caseworker?
Caseworkers visit clients to work out what type of help they need, this might be funds for special equipment for someone with a disability, adaptions to a property so an older client can remain at home or funds for a rental deposit. Caseworkers also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc.
Why do we need you?
Volunteer Caseworkers are the lifeblood of SSAFA, supporting a growing number of people in need of financial, practical and emotional support. Clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan. Our trained volunteers listen without judgement to assess and provide tailored support to help people navigate life in and beyond military service. We need you to join your local SSAFA team to help us achieve this.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
The essential part of the role is visiting clients, so you will need access to a vehicle or another way to travel to meet clients at home or in a care home setting. Our volunteers are based at home with a yearly AGM invite.
What does this role involve?
• Contacting clients and arranging to meet them at a mutually convenient time
• Meeting clients and completing a form to assess their circumstances
• Sign-posting clients onto local services providing specialist advice
• Keeping in touch with your branch so they know your availability
• Keeping up to date with training and SSAFA news so that you are best able to support clients
• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the
Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)

• Local induction including assigning a person from the team who will be your main point of contact. •
• Range of support from central and regional volunteer operations team.
• Reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses
What skills or experience do you need?
• Good listening and communication skills including written and spoken English
• Respectful and non-judgemental with clients, their family, other agencies and SSAFA colleagues
• Willingness and ability to learn basic digital skills. Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role
• Ability to make enquires on behalf of clients by phone, email, letter or by filling in forms
• If required, willingness to use our on-line case management system (this is covered in the caseworker training course)
• Ability to keep within boundaries of the role with regards to friendship or giving advice
• Reliable attitude, contact clients promptly, keep appointments, update the branch regarding your availability
• Access to public transport or a car to travel to appointments with clients
• Friendly and approachable with some experience of coordinating people and admin
• Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA policies.

What is a Publicity Coordinator?
Publicity Coordinators work with other branch volunteers to develop a Publicity Plan to raise awareness of SSAFA that reaches potential beneficiaries, volunteers, and funders.
Why do we need you?
We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community since 1885. Our beneficiaries come from all walks of life and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like the Falklands or Afghanistan. We’d love the general public to understand what we do and how they can help us. We need to recruit volunteers that reflect our local communities and raise money to fund our work. Could you spare a few hours a week to help us raise awareness?
There are SSAFA branches throughout the UK and overseas who support local volunteers to deliver services to veterans, serving personnel and their families. Some branches are divided into smaller divisions to ensure the best local service delivery. Each branch has a team of volunteer caseworkers, support volunteers, executive roles, and fundraisers.
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role is about building awareness so beneficiaries know who we are and how they can benefit from and access support, promoting volunteer opportunities and encourage people to raise finds and celebrate success. This means that on occasions, you might need to be present at events. As part of your local branch, you might have access to an office, but you can conduct the administration part of this role form home.
What would you be doing?
- Working with other branch volunteers to develop a publicity plan.
- Publicising SSAFA events.
- Work with Marketing/PR staff at central office to develop case studies of clients and volunteers and ensure that SSAFA branding and messaging are consistent.
- Develop and maintain networks with local press, TV and radio outlets through providing press releases, interviews, case studies etc.
- Working with the Digital Team at Central Office to develop and maintain a local on-line presence for the branch via a website and social media channels.
- Keeping a stock of SSAFA publicity materials and distributing them
- Liaising with PR staff at central office or on-call in the event of a PR/press situation.
- Supporting local and national campaigns to recruit new volunteers.
- Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA including all sections of the community in awareness raising
- Adhering to SSAFAs policies and procedures at all times, including safeguarding, volunteering policy, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, data protection and confidentiality.
The remit of this role may change over the next 12-18 months depending on the outcome of a trial currently being undertaken.

About the role
We are seeking two exceptional individuals to strengthen our governance structure at a time of significant opportunity and change.
- Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee
This role combines membership of our Federation Board with chairing one of our key committees. The Programmes & Partnerships Committee oversees Groundwork UK’s work to increase our visibility and credibility, build national relationships with government, business and charitable funders, and manage programmes that add value to local delivery while directly supporting communities through grants.
This position requires someone who can navigate the complex dynamics of our federated structure while providing strategic oversight of our national income generation, communications and programme management activities.
- Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member
This specialised role focuses on the systems and processes that underpin everything we do at Groundwork UK.
We need someone who understands the strategic risks and opportunities associated with data utilisation, digital technology, AI and management information systems, particularly in the context of public sector transformation. This isn’t about developing systems, but about governing them effectively and helping us maximise benefits and minimise risks. Who we are looking for
For the Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee, we need someone with senior experience in voluntary sector fundraising, income generation, communications or campaigning. You will have worked at a strategic level in a charity or similar organisation, understanding the complexities of building relationships with diverse funders, from government departments to major foundations to corporate partners. Your experience might include developing or overseeing funding strategies, managing stakeholder relationships, overseeing communications campaigns, or leading programme development initiatives.
For the Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member position, we are looking for someone with experience of systems management in complex organisational environments, potentially in the public sector or with experience in organisations serving public purposes. You might be someone who has worked in transformation, IT management, service digitisation, AI or similar contexts where systems must serve both internal efficiency needs and external public access requirements.
You don’t need to be a technology specialist, but you should understand the governance challenges that arise. This includes cybersecurity risks, data protection obligations, business continuity planning, and the challenge of making informed decisions about technology investments.
Both roles require individuals who are invested in Groundwork’s mission of creating a fair and green future where people, places and nature thrive. You should be someone who can see the connections between social and environmental challenges and who believes in the power of community-led solutions.
- Time Commitment
Both roles operate on a quarterly meeting cycle, with board meetings and committee meetings alternating throughout the year. For the Trustee and Chair of Programmes & Partnerships Committee, this typically involves attending four Federation Board meetings and four committee meetings annually, plus preparation time and occasional ad hoc consultations. We estimate this at the equivalent of up to a day a month.
For the Co-opted Finance & Risk Committee Member position, the commitment would initially be lighter, focused on quarterly committee meetings with associated preparation. This could grow if you choose to take on board membership and attend the Federation Board meetings which are held quarterly.
We meet during weekday daytimes, alternating between in-person sessions in Birmingham and online meetings.

What are we looking for?
Person Specification: What You'll Bring:
- At least two years of proven experience in bid and tender management, preferably within the healthcare (NHS & private), medical, or technology sectors.
- End-to-end bid management experience: A minimum of 4 years' experience leading the whole bid process.
- Preferred qualifications include a degree in Business, Communication, Marketing, Creative Writing, English or equivalent.
- APMP Certification is also desirable.

This is a remote volunteer role ideal for someone looking to use their creative fundraising knowledge to make a meaningful impact.
Role Overview
As a Volunteer Fundraiser at Barefoot and Free, you will be reuired to come up with fun ideas to fundraise, be able to engage people to fundraise and encourage new supporters.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organise and execute virtual and in-person fundraising events (eg raffles, quizzes, sponsored challenges)
- Liase with fundraisng volunteers (eg sponsored runners etc)
- Ensure events run smoothly by preparing, schedules, materials and plans.
- Act as a main point of contact for invividual fundraisers and teams
- Regukar communication to offer encouragement and guidence.
- Procatively check they have everything they need (eg fundraisng pack, marketing materials)

Our internships

Blue Smile's mission is to transform the mental health and life chances of Cambridgeshire children through arts-based therapies, supporting over 200 children a week in the region providing one-to-one therapy and groupwork. We work in particular, in accordance with our charitable aims, with those who face disadvantage or deprivation.
We are seeking new Trustees to join our Board to help us achieve our mission.
Effective governance is key to the continued success and sustainability of our charity. As a trustee you will be able to use your passion for children’s mental health; your experience and knowledge to guide our strategy and vision for the future.
Our Board of Trustees is particularly looking to welcome new trustees with experience in the areas of fundraising, education (primary) and the small charity sector. However, we very much welcome people with a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and lived experience who would like to contribute to the success of our work.
As a trustee, you will receive training to carry out your role, have opportunities to represent Blue Smile in the community, and be part of a supportive and welcoming board. Being a trustee gives you the chance to gain experience in strategic planning, develop skills in new areas, and add significant value to a thriving charity.
Commitment
The Board of Trustees meets six times a year; usually on a weekday evening.
Trustees can also be involved in the work of sub-committees and will meet for a strategy planning session annually.
Location
Board meetings take place online; however, we would welcome visits to our head office in Cambridge.
