CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

For over 40 years, Being There, a medium sized charity, has provided practical, emotional and social support to those affected by life limiting illnesses across much of Greater Manchester. The services of the charity are delivered by an enthusiastic cohort of volunteers managed by an established and capable management team.

After steering Being There though the Pandemic and the recent economic impact on charities, our long serving CEO, Karen Mercer, is retiring. We are therefore looking to recruit a new leader for our team.

We are looking for someone who can:

· Understand and navigate the challenges of charity funding in difficult economic circumstances.

· Lead, motivate and develop the management team, administration staff and volunteers to expand the service.

· Raise the profile of the organisation.

· Seek out and develop relationships with similar organisations, client groups, existing and potential funders.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Head of Operations and Development (HOD) will play a pivotal role in taking our work to its next stage, helping us deliver even greater impact across our community.

With ultimate decision making responsibility for the charity the HOD will work alongside the Head of Counselling and Head of Training,  overseeing the smooth running of day-to-day operations at the Centre while also nurturing opportunities for commercial growth by supporting the fundraising strategy and targeted expansion of our service offering.

Capable of working autonomously, you will be expected to form an integral part of an experienced, hardworking team of professionals and administrators who are dedicated to ensuring the Centre succeeds in all it does.

ABOUT YOU

First and foremost, you will be passionate about the importance of improving mental health in our community.

An excellent communicator with people at all levels, you will be in a position to leverage your commercial and business skills to build on the Centre’s existing operational framework. You will also be expected to get up to speed quickly with various aspects of the Centre’s business functions, including finance, IT and marketing.

Management-level experience in a charitable or not-for-profit organisation is an advantage, but more important is a hands-on, can-do approach and the motivation to help deliver the Centre’s strategy over the coming years.

The post is part-time with flexibility in the hours required. The role allows for hybrid working depending upon the demands of the job. Time at our offices in central Tunbridge Wells will be required.

Baird and Co Recruitment, a specialist Social Housing recruitment firm, have been retained by The Yardley Great Trust Group and Sir Josiah Mason Trust in their acquisition of a Finance Director.

The role will work across both businesses following their partnership agreement in January 2023. Both businesses are steeped in the history of Birmingham, with the origins of The Yardley Great Trust Group going back to the 14th Century and SJMT’s beginnings in 1868. Their work in the Alms House arena is also highly individual, an area of support found in the heritage of SJMT.

The Finance Director role would ideally start swiftly and will take on a largely strategic direction whilst still requiring operational input.

Based in Olton, candidates with experience in a senior leadership role in finance whilst holding an understanding of how charities, housing providers or public sector organisations work will be highly advantageous.

The Finance Director post will cover many facets including, but not limited to:

Executive Leadership

• Working with the executive team to develop and manage the delivery of robust corporate, strategic and financial business plans
• Demonstrating positive leadership behaviours and bringing values to life within the organisational culture
• Effectively planning and providing for the resources required to action strategic and operational plans
• Undertaking quarterly reviews of the Charity's Risk Registers, reporting on major risks and mitigations at each Board meeting.

Financial Strategy and Control

• Leading on the delivery of strategic and annual financial business plans, ensuring viability is regularly tested through scenario modelling, appraisals, and stress tests
• Taking responsibility for annual budget and management accounts processes and preparation of statutory accounts
• Maintaining up-to-date reserves policies that meet the requirements of both the Charity SORP and RSL SORP
• Managing relationships with investment managers, ensuring regular review of performance and satisfaction
• Developing and maintaining effective systems of financial control that ensure that business plans are continually reviewed and reported on
• Maintaining overall responsibility for the computerised accounting system, including sales ledger, purchase ledger, cash book and nominal ledger

Treasury

• Being responsible for each Trust’s Treasury Management strategy and policy to ensure the availability of and flexibility of funding to support the achievement of strategic objectives and reduce exposure

Risk Management

• Leading on the development of risk management strategies and registers, audit frameworks, procedures and appraisal systems for capital projects and all other significant areas of risk.   

Growth and Innovation

• To support the Chief Executive in the development of the Strategic Business Plans in a way that supports innovation and growth in services

ICT / HR

• Leading on the development and delivery of an effective ICT and Telecoms Strategy which supports mobile and agile working and customer relationship management that underpins our drive for excellent business
• Supporting with the development, implementation and review of an effective People Strategy which supports the vision and values of each Trust
• Reviewing the administration of all statutory returns and sector-relevant returns/surveys
• Leading on the annual remuneration review to approve or decline and make recommendations for salary increases
• Taking responsibility for the outsourced payroll and workplace pension scheme
• Overseeing the relationship with the outsourced IT support provider, ensuring optimal support to staff and monitoring performance against contract
• Working with and developing the use of financial accounting software to meet the operational and strategic development needs of the business

To secure the Finance Director post, the Trusts are seeking the below:

• Proven experience at a senior leadership level in a finance environment
• Experience preparing financial business plans, modelling scenarios and sensitivity analysis
• A track record of delivering on a range of other corporate support services such as IT or HR and Governance
• A relevant Professional Qualification i.e. CCAB or equivalent and membership of a recognised UK body desirable
• Up-to-date knowledge of all regulatory requirements including Finance, People, IT & Governance
• Experience developing services to achieve and support strategic organisational objectives.

Key Impact Areas

 Maximise Giving

You will implement a philanthropic giving strategy that significantly shifts the museums approach towards the generation of substantial philanthropic income and that supports the Museum's vision and mission. You will work collaboratively with the Executive, Board of Trustees and senior leadership team to establish a long-term plan and supporting fundraising strategies that align and help the museum move forward with its objectives.

 Cultivate and Steward Donors

You will actively cultivate and steward relationships with potential and existing donors, for major new, repeat and legacy gifts, significantly raising the profile of Beamish, generating excitement and a desire to support Beamish now and into the future across a range of projects.  These will be supported by stewardship plans that foster mutual trust to secure ongoing support. 

Reputation and Engagement

You will build the profile of the Museum through donor engagement.  You will personally manage a portfolio of prospective donors, guiding them through the cultivation process, and ultimately securing new funding. You will work closely with the CEO building new networks, opening new doors and linking with communities in support of the museum's philanthropic goals and furthering its reputation and that of the sector.

Successful Philanthropy Team

You will ensure a high performing team is in place that supports Beamish’s Philanthropic strategy, imbuing a culture of innovation and enterprise across the museum. The team will ensure day to day delivery of the function, including to trusts and grants, provide excellent customer service, and produce timely data to support and measure the impact of all giving.  The team will champion equality, diversity and sustainability and creating a strong culture of philanthropy throughout Beamish. 

Essential Qualities, Experience and Knowledge

• Significant experience working at a senior level, building strong relationships with supporters who can give at a six/seven figure level.
• Demonstrable extensive networks, including trusts and foundations, corporate partners and high net worth individuals.
• Personal track record of securing six figure donations from Trusts and Foundations
• An excellent communicator who can inspire staff, volunteers and colleagues in taking our philanthropic strategy forwards.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills including tact, sophistication and gravitas 
• ·Able to work collaboratively, engaging with colleagues to design robust project proposals and reporting, monitoring and evaluation systems
• Skilled in utilising financial information including project budgets
• A commitment to Beamish’s mission, objectives and guiding principles.
• Strong intellectual curiosity and the ability to articulate the museums range of programmes and strategies in a compelling way

About the Youth Endowment Fund 

We’re here to prevent children and young people becoming involved in violence. We do this by finding out what works and building a movement to put this knowledge into practice.  

The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) is a charity with a £200m endowment and a mission that matters. We exist to prevent children becoming involved in violence. We do this by funding great initiatives, leading cutting-edge research and working for change - scaling up and spreading the practices that make a difference. 

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) has a critical role in ensuring we succeed in this work. You have a key leadership role in overseeing the overall health of the Fund in partnership with the Executive Director. The role oversees our finances, people management and – for the right candidate –much of our grant-making and project management. 

Key responsibilities 

You’ll lead on key organisational governance processes and ensure the Fund makes wise decisions, by:  

• Being a leading member of our Directors’ team, overseeing all elements of the Fund’s work.

• Ensuring that the Fund operates as efficiently and effectively as possible by prioritising the right activities and matching resources to deliver on our mission.

• Ensuring we have the right long, medium and short-term financial plans in place and that we maintain close control over our financial decisions and spend. 

• Informing our Board and our Risk and Audit Committee on our financial performance and risk.

• Ensuring the Fund’s investments are well managed through supporting the Endowment Investment Committee (this does not require investment experience). 

• Managing our Grants and Evaluation Committee (this decides which evaluations we should fund) and ensuring it operates effectively. 

• Ensuring that any ambiguities in the organisation are identified and removed. 

You make sure that the Fund has the people, tools and resources in place to excel. This will require us to:  

• Hire, develop and inspire the very best people: Managing our Head of People, you will ensure that we hire the best possible staff, compensate them appropriately, provide necessary and effective training, maintain a strong focus on staff well-being, manage and develop staff effectively and address poor performance when required. 

• Provide staff with the tools they need to perform: Managing our Head of Grant Operations, you will ensure that we have the tools we need to deliver, including management information, databases, systems and processes and office facilities. 

• Track performance: Track performance against our goals efficiently and effectively, championing a system of accountability and action to review, identify and empower the right people to act on delivering according to the plan. 

Working with colleagues, you’ll ensure we award grants, manage grantees and oversee evaluations efficiently and effectively. This will require us to: 

• Make excellent decisions about our grants: Working with – and potentially managing1 - the Assistant Director for Programmes, Impact and Partnerships, you will help to ensure that our processes for assessing funding applications achieve our organisational priorities for evidence generation. This requires you to understand what partners are trying to do, whether it’s likely to work, whether it will help us build an accessible and trusted body of knowledge, and whether we can build on it to make long-term change happen. 

• Evaluate our programmes: Working with - and potentially managing - the Assistant Director of Evaluation, you will help to ensure that we select and partner with high-quality evaluators to understand how well different activities work.

• Ensuring the team maintains effective monitoring processes: Working with your team, you will develop the necessary skills, processes and decision-making processes to identify when things aren’t going to plan and respond accordingly.

• Build strong relationships with your external partners: You and your team will build strong, trusting relationships with the projects the YEF funds and the evaluators that we work with. Your team will be known for being attentive yet assertive and measured and efficient in the reporting information we expect. You will become well connected in the sectors that we are working in.

• Identify opportunities to scale up projects: You will be proactive in identifying projects that would benefit from capacity development support or that may be ready to scale up their work, collaborating with Impetus to deliver on this. 

In support of these goals you will also 

• Lead and build a team that is so much more than the sum of its parts: Working with your direct reports you will build a culture that brings the very best of the different skill sets and approaches in your team. You will lead this team, providing exceptional direction, culture and clarity.

Person specification 

• You are excellent at leading on finance in an organisation: You find it easy and straightforward to develop and oversee, large organisational budgets and ensure timely preparation of management accounts. You’re excellent at financial forecasting and understand how to make judgements and recommendations based on future scenario planning. You have experience reporting to Boards on financial performance and health, and leading on organisational external audits.

• You are strategic about finance: You’ve got real skill in distilling complex financial information into simple, easy to understand reports and presentations that enable good decision-making. You see your knowledge of finance as a way to serve Director-level colleagues with overall decision-making. You also understand how to navigate competing priorities and how to calculate and articulate risk and reward, knowing few decisions are straightforward.

• You get teams to use data well: You understand that accurate data and excellent management information tools enable good decision-making. You understand how management information databases (like Salesforce) work and would be able to maintain and build a culture of recording data and maintaining data quality within big teams. Ideally, you have experience working directly with Salesforce.

• You get things done and are brilliant at improving things: In previous jobs, you have held significant responsibility for ensuring challenging projects are delivered on time. You like finding ways to make things operate better for everyone. You are excellent at designing and putting in place effective systems and processes.

You have experience of wrestling into place a strategy for a project or organisation. You would be able to describe the strategy of the work you are leading at the moment. I applied to join NEF because it is one of the UK’s largest and most-respected progressive think tanks, with a nearly 40 years track record of producing radical ideas and influencing policymaking to deliver a more just and sustainable world. From global debt justice to retrofitting homes, from the Happy Planet Index to campaigning for a 4-day working week, from promoting local economic development to championing the Green New Deal, NEF has been arguing for an economics as if people and planet mattered. 

Since starting at NEF in January 2024, I have been impressed by the quality of our work and people, the influence we have on policymakers and opinion-formers, and the respect we are held in. That said, from climate change to rising inequality, the challenges the world faces are immense. Release Counselling and Therapy for Women was set up in Brighton and Hove in January 2013, and registered as a UK charity in 2020, to provide affordable counselling and other forms of support for women across Sussex experiencing mental health distress. We specialise in maternal mental health, supporIng mothers and their babies during the perinatal period, a key Ime of transiIon in a women’s life in which many experience vulnerable mental health. As part of this, we aim to increase inclusion, reaching women often excluded from counselling and other mental health support due to cost.

Whilst we have offered a range of therapeutIc groups, workshops and 1-2-1 counselling over the years, we are currently focussing on delivering our flagship ‘Mother Nurture’ 10-week therapeutIc group for new mums, and our ‘Second Nature’ 8-week therapeutIc group for second + tIme mums across Sussex.

Our services are operated by a team of sessional qualified counsellors, and counsellors in supervised training, and work within the BACP Ethical Framework.

As the founding CEO is now moving on, we are looking to appoint a new CEO to lead us in this next season. The Chief ExecuIve is responsible for the successful operaIon and development of Release Counselling and Therapy for Women CIO, in accordance with the Charity’s Strategic Plan and policies of the Board.

Remuneration

£46,464 - £50,512 pro rata, depending on experience

Main Purpose and scope of role

1.Leadership

Provide leadership for the charity and its staff by -

• Ensure the values of the charity are embedded through the organisation fostering a positive work culture that promotes collaboration, professional development and staff well-being.
• Build and maintain key partnerships to enhance the charity’s impact and reach within the community. Including, represenIng the charity to third parIes such as, funders, the public, other sector agencies, and statutory bodies.

2.Governance & Compliance

• Work closely with the board of trustees to ensure the charity adheres to the highest levels of governance including all legal and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure the board of trustees are well informed of the work of the charity, providing them with all the information they require in order to exercise their fiduciary duIes and in accordance with their legal requirements.
• Ensure the organisaIon’s policies and pracIces are kept up to date and adhered to, including and ensuring effective risk management.

3.Strategy

• Work with the board of trustees to develop the strategic direcIon for the charity in line with the charity’s mission and objectives.
• Implement the strategic plans and communicate this internally and externally as appropriate.
• Keep abreast of sector developments, closely monitoring opportuniIes and threats, and taking acIon accordingly.

4.Operations

• Ensure the charity is resourced to meet the objecIves of the strategic plans.
• Lead fundraising activities for the organisation, including income generaIon, monitoring and evaluation securing diverse income from government grants, foundations, corporate sponsors and individual donors.
• Manage the financial performance of the charity, including setting budgets and providing financial reporting to the board of trustees.
• Develop effective controls, incorporating finance, data management, safeguarding, equalities, and monitoring systems.
• HR oversight.

5.Service delivery

• Manage the successful delivery of the charity’s work in line with its contractual obligations.
• Manage and upskill a team of staff, ensuring they are fully skilled and able to deliver effectively for the organisation.
• Ensuring all service delivery is impact driven and of the highest quality.

6.Communications and PR

• Manage all internal and external communicaIons for the charity.
• Act as a spokesperson and first point of contact for all press and media enquiries.
• Represent the charity at public events and conferences as opportunities present themselves.

7.Safeguarding

• To work alongside the Designated Trustee Lead for Safeguarding in creating a culture of high safeguarding standards throughout the organisation.
• To ensure that the statutory obligaIons with regards to safeguarding are met and any safeguarding issues arising are dealt with in an appropriate manner.

You will report directly to the Board of Trustees, ensuring excellent governance of the Charity, regulatory compliance with the Charity Commission and Companies House, and will collaborate with Trustees on designing and executing the 2024-2027 strategy. You will lead and support a team of seven staff, supporting 500+ older and disabled Neighbours annually with a large team of volunteers. You will ensure excellent management of charity’s finances and that adequate funding is in place to maintain all charitable activity, monitoring and evaluation. You will ensure that the charity maintains its reputation and develops its exposure and standing.

You will have strategic leadership experience and have previously led teams. You will have a strong understanding of charity governance and will have demonstrable fundraising knowledge and/or experience. You will be passionate about supporting older and disabled people and will have a strong understanding of their needs. You will be equipped to represent the Charity both internally and externally.  

JOB DESCRIPTION

Strategy and Operations

1. Develop, implement, and lead execution of the charity's annual operational plan and 3-year strategic plan.

2. Identify appropriate level of staffing, volunteering, ensuring that all staff and volunteers are appropriately interviewed, vetted, inducted, trained, developed, and supported to deliver against their objectives.

3. Ensure appropriate upkeep, security, and management of the charity’s premises, including all relevant contracts and payments.

4. Ensure that the charity’s IT systems are fit for purpose and compliant with relevant law.

People

5. Line management of seven staff members, and responsibility for staff and team development, cohesion and appraisals.

6. Recruit and support social club facilitators and appropriate consultants to provide additional resource to the charity as required.

7. Lead staff member for safeguarding, liaising directly with Hammersmith and Fulham Adult Social Care.

8. Ensure appropriate mechanisms and safeguards are in place to support up to 100 regular volunteers, and up to 100 additional corporate/student volunteers.

9. Ensure appropriate mechanisms and safeguards are in place to support up to 500 beneficiaries and additional attendees at FGN events.

Finance and Fundraising

10. Develop, implement, and lead charity’s financial and fundraising planning and management, ensuring that the charity operates at least at break-even, ideally with a small surplus.

11. Ensure that the charity has a diverse range of income across various streams, inclusive of (but not limited to) public sector, trusts and foundations, corporate income, events, and online giving.

12. Ensure that the charity is receiving value for money with all expenditure, ensuring contract review on a timely basis as appropriate.

13. Ensure appropriate cashflow projections so that expenditure does not exceed income in any one year unless pre-agreed with trustees.

14. Ensure that appropriate financial controls are in place so to protect charity and anyone handling money on behalf of the charity.

15. In conjunction with the finance administrator and hon. treasurer monitor all income, expenditure, accounts, funding investments and budgets.

Governance

16 Ensure compliance with charity and company law, inclusive of writing, presentation and filing of annual report and accounts and other Company Secretary duties.

17 Organise, attend, record and report at board meetings every two months, inclusive of finance and operations reporting and the regular cycle of governance reviews.

18 Plan, organise and attend AGM and annual strategy session.

19 Ensure appropriate level of risk management and insurance are in place for the charity.

20 Ensure all relevant policies, procedures and financial controls are in place, inclusive of annual review.

Communications and Impact

21. Represent and promote the charity in public, sourcing media opportunities as appropriate so to increase visibility.

22. Represent the charity on appropriate networks and forums so to develop stakeholder relationships and source opportunities for cross-partner collaboration.

23. Ensure positive, fit-for-purpose, internal and external communications, inclusive of monthly newsletters, social media presence and other marketing materials.

24. Ensure appropriate monitoring and evaluation of projects and develop relationships with academic institutions and/or research consultancies where possible so to elicit external perspectives and scrutiny of the charity’s work.

25. Build relationships with local stakeholders and businesses.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential requirements

1. Senior management experience within the charity sector or similar

We are seeking an experienced and influential leader to join us as our new Chief Executive.  You will play a critical role in leading the organisation and representing PATA and its members in the ever-evolving Early Education and Children’s Play sectors.

PATA is the largest voluntary sector provider of support to the Early Years and Play (Out of School) sector in Gloucestershire.  We are a Charity based in Gloucester with around 170 member settings and manage five of our own Early Years settings (PATA Managed Groups (PMGs)).  Our mission is to support the development of high quality and accessible early education, play and provision for children, young people and their families.

At its heart, PATA is a people-based organisation and you will be joining a strong and committed team, both in the Head Office and the PMGs.  You will lead the organisation, working with the Board of Trustees in setting the strategic vision, mission and priorities.  You will be a voice for PATA and its members, building partnerships, participating in consultation processes, and challenging policy and other initiatives for the benefit of the sector, as and when appropriate.
