Job description

UNICEF ensures more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated, and protected than any other organisation. We have done more to influence laws and policies to help protect children than anyone else. We get things done. And we’re not going to stop until the world is a safe place for all our children.

This is a great opportunity to join the UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) as a Senior Political Affairs Adviser, a key role in the Advocacy Department which supports the design, development and implementation of domestic political influencing strategies on behalf of the organisation.

As Senior Political Affairs Adviser, you will play a crucial role in managing influential relationships with MPs and Peers across the UK Parliament and where relevant, elected representatives across the devolved assemblies. By providing political monitoring, analysis and strategic insight, you will ensure the Advocacy Team and wider organisation are well equipped to ensure children are at the heart of decision making.

To succeed, you will have worked in a UK political setting such as the UK Parliament or similar institutions. You will have experience of influencing Parliamentarians to deliver policy change on legislation and broader policy positions and you will be skilled at planning, design and delivery of high-quality events. We are looking for strong analytical skills, an in-depth understanding of UK politics and current affairs, political parties and processes, parliamentary systems and procedures and Government decision making, as well as demonstrable knowledge of issues affecting children’s lives in the UK.

You will join the team at an exciting time and have the opportunity to help to shape upcoming work to protect and uphold the rights of children living in the UK.

Closing date: 5pm, 8 October 2021.

Interview date: Tuesday, 19 October 2021 via video conferencing.

We are normally based on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London but while our office is closed, this role will work from home or from wherever makes you happy. We are expecting to move to a hybrid approach (part home/part office based) when our office reopens.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from black, Asian and or another minoritised ethnicity, LGBTQ+ candidates, disabled candidates, and from men, because we would like to increase the representation of these groups at this level at Unicef UK. We want to do this because we know greater diversity will lead to even greater results for children.

UNICEF UK promotes equality, diversity and inclusion in our workplace. We make employment decisions by matching business needs with skills and experience of candidates, irrespective of age, disability (including hidden disabilities), gender, gender identity or gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.

We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

The successful candidate will be required to apply for a criminal records check. A criminal record will not necessarily bar you from working with us. This will depend on the nature of the role and the circumstances of your offences.

We only accept online applications as this saves us money, making more funds available for us to help ensure children’s rights.

If you do not hear from us within 14 days of the closing date, please assume your application has been unsuccessful on this occasion. Please note that we only provide feedback to shortlisted candidates.
