The Finance Officer will join a small and dynamic team that covers Finance, Human Resources, IT and Business Operations. The Finance & Operations team play a critical role by running the day-to-day operations and providing the infrastructure that enables the continued delivery of the Trust’s mission and objectives.

The Sutton Trust is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Finance Officer to join the team and provide crucial support on a range of key finance processes. The Team

This role will fit into the small Finance & Operations team and will be line managed by the Finance Manager.

Main Duties

• Maintaining the Purchase Ledger including processing supplier invoices, staff expense claims, grant and bursary payments, reconciling statements and making the relevant payments
• Maintaining the Sales Ledger including raising invoices and allocating receipts
• Cash management including checking bank transactions daily, allocating transactions on the accounting system and producing regular bank reconciliations. Paying in cheques and reconciling floats, if required
• Maintaining accurate records of both unrestricted and restricted fund transactions including receipts, grants, staff expenses, overheads and cash
• Providing timely and accurate financial support to the Programmes, Development and Research teams to assist them with forecasting, budgeting, reconciliation and (donor) reporting
• Supporting with the month end procedures such as balance sheet reconciliations, depreciation, month end adjustments, salary and overhead allocations
• Gathering monthly payroll information and reviewing monthly payroll reports
• Assisting with the administration of the pension scheme and of employee benefits
• Preparing quarterly Gift Aid claims and maintaining the relevant supporting documentation
• Assisting with the year-end statutory accounts preparation, audit and budget setting process
• Ensuring that the filing is done in a timely manner and that all paperwork is up to date
• Proactively updating your own knowledge in relation to the role, identifying and undertaking appropriate training

Main Duties

• Work with the Director of Development and Executive Director of Communications, Engagement and Development to create and implement a highly ambitious and sustainable regular and annual giving strategy in support of the College’s short, medium, and long-term vision.  
• Be responsible for the day-to-day management of regular and annual giving activities.
• Prepare and manage detailed plans for the execution of appeals including digital, direct mail and/or personal solicitations.
• Work collaboratively with team members to ensure rigorous gift management administrations systems and accurate maintenance of prospect data.
• Manage follow-up action when pledges and gifts are received including ensuring that supporters are appropriately recognised and stewarded.
• Conduct data analysis to understand donor behaviour and prevailing themes and trends and develop data driven annual giving strategies.
• Support fundraising strategy through the implementation of strong support systems, and day-to-day administrative practices. 
• Ensure all fundraising activities undertaken in support of the College are performed to the highest standards and in accordance with best practice as established by professional bodies such as CASE, IDPE and the Institute for Fundraising. 
• Ensure that all activities comply fully with the relevant Data Protection and any other legislation in the UK and overseas.
• Work with external stakeholders, volunteers, and other supporters to maximise their relationships and networks. 
• Produce timely, relevant, and accurate reports on progress and projections on all development activities. 
• Maintain knowledge of best practice in fundraising and related matters, refreshing skills as necessary 
• Carry out other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Director of Development and Executive Director of Communications, Engagement and Development. 
• Support the delivery of the College’s charitable vision, by attending events and presentations and acting as a strong ambassador for Eton.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will need to be able to demonstrate the following:

• Demonstrable fundraising experience in a philanthropic role;
• Demonstrated track record of developing and executing successful fundraising strategies;
• Proven experience in database entry, analysis, reporting, and some project management;
• Proven experience and proficiency in donor database formats; knowledge of ThankQ/Access Charity CRM a plus;
• Proven experience with donor engagement and volunteer management;
• Ability to assess donor data and segment appropriately;
• Ability to interact with donors;
• Ability to initiate projects, be flexible, and work independently;
• Ability to prioritize appropriately when facing multiple responsibilities and tasks;
• Ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral;
• Excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to details;
• Excellent IT knowledge and skills;

Working Pattern

• Your working hours will be 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.
• You will be working 52 weeks per year.

The impact you will have

Leading Connection Support’s fundraising activities, you will generate income from existing sources and new income streams, and inspire funders, donors and local companies to support our work. Providing strategic direction combined with a hands-on role, you will lead on funding applications, plan and deliver campaigns and events, and develop lasting relationships with our supporters.

This is an exciting time to join Connection Support as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and turn our focus to preventing homelessness long before it happens, as well as continuing to provide support for those in crisis. You will be joining a supportive and friendly team and will work closely with colleagues from across the organisation to deliver fundraising activities and raise the profile of Connection Support.

About you

You will have significant fundraising experience, including trust and foundation fundraising. In addition, you will have experience of at least one charitable income stream, i.e. cooperate, public, major donor or legacy, and a successful track record of delivering results.

Your experience should also include designing and managing fundraising campaigns and monitoring and analysing fundraising performance.

You will be passionate about solving homelessness and mental ill-health and share the values of Connection Support.

 About Alexandra Rose Charity 

Founded by Queen Alexandra in 1912, Alexandra Rose Charity (ARC) has a long history of supporting people experiencing poverty in the UK. Our vision is for everyone to have access to healthy and affordable food, and our mission is to give families on low incomes access to fresh fruit and vegetables in their local communities whilst advocating for systemic change to address food insecurity and health inequalities.

Since 2014, ARC has pioneered the use of financial incentives to improve access to healthy food and combat food insecurity through our Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg projects. To date, we have supported over 11,000 families, including over 20,000 children, to access £3.5 million of fresh fruit and vegetables in their local communities.

To deliver this scale, we work with 73 children and family centres and community organisations, 69 market traders and independent retailers, two fruit and vegetable vans and one fruit and vegetable delivery box scheme. We estimate that our projects have generated a total economic value added of almost £9 million for the local economies of the eight locations where we work: five London Boroughs, Barnsley, Liverpool and Glasgow.

As part of our new five-year strategy, we want to grow our reach and impact as part of a national movement where Rose Vouchers for Fruit & Veg projects are embedded in local and national policies and seen as a key intervention for transforming the diets of communities across the UK.

About the role  

As we launch our new 5 year strategy we are looking for an experienced Head of Finance & Business Services to help deliver our mission and support the growth and consolidation of the charity. As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will play a key role in implementing our new strategy as well as managing risk.

You will take overall responsibility for the organisation’s financial management, working closely with the Chief Executive and the Treasurer.

You will provide effective finance business partner support to other functions within the charity to support its fundraising, operations and development.

You will also be responsible for the line management of the Finance & Business Administrator, working with the Chief Executive to both oversee and support the business services function of the charity.
