We train our team members to understand how psychological attitude has a huge impact on project success. No previous conservation experience is required. We provide all the necessary training to be part of our highly successful work, starting at our nature reserve in Sussex.

We work with hundreds of adult volunteers every year at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, running practical and wellbeing based volunteering sessions and managing and improving our beautiful wildlife area in South East Leeds.

Volunteer Officers are a key part of our team, working both independently and with volunteer teams and the local community at Skelton Grange Environment Centre, helping to plan, prepare and run sessions. You will be trained and supported by experienced project staff and work as part of a team with paid staff, trainees and Volunteer Officers.

Typical activities for Volunteer Officers include:
- Leading or assisting groups of volunteers on practical conservation tasks, including preparing and organising activities, supporting and training volunteers (including some with additional support needs) looking after tools, refreshments and group welfare.
- Assisting with public events and related activities.
- Working to develop and maintain the wildlife area as an exciting and inspiring location for visitors to get a hands-on experience with nature. This will include both development work and routine maintenance.
- Keeping the activity days and resources up to date and developing new resources or materials as required.
- Helping with the general running of the centre and the project.

We are a Scottish registered Charity, established in 1983, which supports the fish of the Tweed in every way possible. The bulk of our work is scientific, but it extends to education, advocacy and the promotion of angling amongst young people. We aim to engage and involve everybody from local schoolchildren to international bodies in the importance of aquatic ecosystems, the value of healthy rivers and their flora and fauna, and the economic and social benefits of sustainable river management. Our science is essential to this work and to the understanding and protection of the water environments that fish depend on.

The Tweed is one of the world’s great Salmon rivers. Its iconic species, the Atlantic Salmon, our greatest concern, is now an endangered species (and defined as such by the IUCN), and the entire ecosystem is under increasing threat from global warming and other, catchment wide, pressures. We urgently need to expand our work, especially in research, advocacy and education. This is where you come in…

We are looking for new trustees to strengthen our board and increase our impact. We are especially looking for the following skills and experience:

• Environmental and ecological management
• Monitoring and conservation of freshwater fish and aquatic environments
• Advocacy, Communications and PR
• Science and Education
• Fundraising and income generation

Are you skilled in any of these areas? The Board of Trustees meet 6 times a year, generally at our office near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, though online attendance is possible. We have additional meetings as required and Trustees are encouraged to get involved with our work and support events up and down the river.

About The Role

An exciting opportunity to volunteer with the team at the Conservation Breeding Unit (CBU) at Slimbridge has arisen. As a CBU horticulture and maintenance volunteer, you will play a vital role in assisting the Conservation Breeding Team to uphold the highest standards of care and welfare. You'll achieve this by maintaining and constructing facilities and aviaries at CBU and carrying out various horticultural roles such as grass mowing, weeding and 'planting up' aviaries for a collection of birds that are vital to ongoing conservation efforts. 

This role is ideal if you are interested in learning how things work 'behind the scenes' at an organisation that prides itself on carrying out effective and successful wetland conservation. You will have the opportunity to develop your horticultural and DIY skills. You will also learn from a team of dedicated conservation aviculturists who are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, making this an ideal stepping-stone for those who are looking to enter the world of practical conservation work but require more experience to get their foot in the door.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You'll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need. 

About You

This role could be perfect for you if you are:

•  An early career conservationist/aviculturist looking for some extra experience of working within the sector
• Looking to develop your skillset, especially horticultural skills, through experience and training opportunities
• Keen to learn and improve your understanding of how conservation looks and functions 'behind the scenes'
• Interested in making a real contribution to the conservation work of WWT

We are looking for someone who:

• Cares about managing vegetation in and around a small site for the benefit of wildlife.
• Is proactive and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision, initiative is a highly valued characteristic.
• Is willing to listen and learn new skills and information on a regular basis in order to support the work of CBU.
• Has a moderate level of fitness.
• Is able to work well within a small, cross-department team and doesn't mind getting wet and mucky!
• Has some knowledge or experience of gardening/conservation/DIY (not essential).

Road: Slimbridge Wetland Centre is 2 miles off the A38. There is a large car park with ample car parking spaces and there is a bike rack available for staff volunteers. Rail: Cam & Dursley rail station is a 3.5 mile cycle or taxi ride away. Bus: Unfortunately, there is no bus service directly to Slimbridge: the nearest services stop is at the A38, 2 miles walk from the Centre.

North London Scout District is the leading inner-city Scout District in the country, covering the London Boroughs of Camden, Haringey, Islington and the City of London and providing outdoor experiences and skills for life for young people from a very diverse city population. The Scout District is a registered charity with over 2,000 members in active Scout Groups across the boroughs we cover. We have a lovely camp site and centre with 8 acres of woodland and open fields hidden away in the heart of Bounds Green, and a modern centre and sports hall on the Holloway Road as well as other property, considerable reserves in various investments, and four employees.

We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Trustee Board and support our ambition. This is a challenging and rewarding role, helping to ensure the organisation continues to fulfil its role in developing young people, managing resources responsibly and remaining sustainable. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in strategic financial management and of working for or within a Board. Equally important is a desire to support young people, commitment to our Scouting values and a collaborative style, able to draw out the skill and potential within our team.

Job description

As a Trustee you will:

a) Be an important part of the body that governs the charity and ensures it delivers its mission effectively.

b) Actively participate in meetings, offering guidance and support to ensure that North London Scout District delivers experiences for young people and supports adult volunteers in a safe environment.

c) Set North London Scout District’s budgets, plans and financial reports, ensuring they meet the organisation’s needs and the relevant regulatory requirements.

d) Help ensure North London Scout District is complying with UK Scout policy and processes and all relevant laws, as well as updating and reviewing its own policies and procedures. .

e) Act with care and skill in North London Scout District’s best interests.

f) Be or become a member of the Scouts.

As a Trustee you share, with all the Trustees, equal responsibility for the charity.

Person Specification

Prospective Trustees will:

a) Be committed the development of young people through Scouting.

b) Have experience of developing good relationships with people and organisations, stakeholders and supporters.

c) Be able to work in a team, recognising and respecting the difference between the Trustees’ role and that of staff or volunteers.

d) Be able to contribute to and ensure North London Scout District’s future plans and strategic development and/or financial stability.

All Trustees, as members of The Scouts, will be required to undertake an enhanced disclosure check with the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (a DBS check).

The prospective Treasurer will have:

a) A recognised accounting qualification.

b) Significant experience of financial management, budgeting and reporting, including the management of investments. 

c) An understanding of the financial, strategic and operational risks and their mitigation in a charity context.

d) Be familiar with charity accounting and statutory reporting requirements.

The Treasurer leads on all financial matters, working with the Finance Committee.  The Finance Committee is responsible for making budget recommendations and financial reports to the Board and for agreeing and overseeing financial and related policies. The Treasurer liaises closely with the bookkeeper, an employee, to provide quarterly financial reports, the annual budget and annual statutory accounts to the Board.  Input is also required during the annual audit process.

The Board

North London Scout District is governed by a Board of between 8 and 15 (currently 13) Trustees, who are elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in June. Trustees normally serve for at least 4 years.

Trustees are not paid but travel expenses may be claimed for attending meetings.

The Board meets (via Zoom and in person) 5 - 6 times a year, usually early evening on a Wednesday. Regular dates are agreed a year in advance.

Individual Trustees also join or lead the Board’s Committees.  There is currently a Finance Committee (which meets 5 times a year, a week or so ahead of Board meetings. We also have occasional task groups for short-term items.

ANIMAL FOSTERER

As an animal fosterer, you would be supporting the RSPCA in providing either our cats, dogs, and rabbits the safety of your home whilst tending to their welfare needs such as feeding and grooming. In addition to this, by providing a temporary loving environment, you will play a crucial role in their wellbeing and socialisation, which will significantly improve their chances of successful rehoming.

Once everything is in place, our Operations Manager will guide you through the fostering process and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, food, and veterinary care for your foster. The RSPCA is also happy to reimburse any other pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.

Whilst our animals are in your foster care, you will:

• Provide them with care, suitable housing, and a safe environment as per our policies and guidelines.
• Feed, water, and groom them in line with our advice.
• Transport them to any veterinary appointments if required.
• Provide them with your time and patience.
• Help us spread the word about the animals in your care so they might find their forever home quicker.
• Playing and cuddles are also a must!                                                                              

 What we are looking for in a volunteer Fosterer

• Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience caring for animals.
• Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.
• For their wellbeing, the whole family should be on board with fostering an animal.
• Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they cannot be so, please let us know if this is the case).
• Any existing pets must be vaccinated.

It is worth mentioning that our animals do have different needs as whilst some are ready for rehoming others may require rehabilitation or ongoing medication. Therefore, we also aim to understand your situation and circumstances to ensure that we match you with your perfect foster animal.

Our voluntary roles are subject to an informal interview and trial period. We will ask you to provide contact details for two referees, and dependant on the position, you may need to sign an agreement and undergo specific training before starting the role.
