About Candlelighters 

Each year, over 150 children in Yorkshire are diagnosed with cancer. When a child is diagnosed, lives are turned upside down instantly: not just for the child but the entire family. Getting well again can be a long and challenging journey, emotionally, physically, and financially.

Supporting children and families throughout that journey is why our charity, Candlelighters, was formed more than 40 years ago. Our mission is to bring light to every family affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire by providing emotional, practical and financial support, as well as bringing hope, by investing in vital research to improve the outcomes and lives of children with cancer. 

Purpose of the Role and Key Activities: 

Families who have been affected by children’s cancer (including patients, parents, siblings and grandparents) can come to The Square for a coffee and a chat, as well as book and access a variety of support services, including: 

• Wellbeing Services & Activities 

• Specialist 1:1 Support 

• Family Support Groups and Events 

As a Front of House Volunteer, you will support the Family Support Worker role and the rest of the Team at Candlelighters with a variety of tasks including (but not limited to): 

• Meeting and greeting families and other visitors 

• Making drinks for families and visitors

• Answering the telephone, transferring calls and taking messages 

• Making bookings and updating our database 

• Keeping the reception area clean and tidy 

• Keeping the kitchen, meeting rooms and other communal areas clean and tidy 

• Cleaning and maintaining the coffee machine 

• Setting up rooms for meetings and events 

• Assisting the Team with other tasks and activities as required 

• Maintaining professional boundaries and adhering to Candlelighters’ policies and procedures 

• Checking stock levels and dates in Champs Pantry 

• Re-stocking refreshments and drinks 

We are looking for volunteers who: 

• Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills 

• Have experience of working in a customer service environment 

• Have excellent customer care skills

• Can communicate effectively with a variety of people 

• Are confident, friendly and approachable 

• Have a fun and positive outlook

• Are experienced in working as part of a team

• Can remain calm under pressure 

• Are proactive and able to use own initiative 

• Are hardworking, reliable and organised 

• Have good IT skills and experience of using a database 

• Can move furniture (tables and chairs) and boxes

• Can climb multiple flights of stairs 

• Can manage own emotions when working with families affected by childhood cancer 

• Can maintain professional boundaries and follow Candlelighters Policies and Procedures. 

This role is subject to an enhanced criminal record check, which is processed through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

We recognise that family members accessing Candlelighters’ services may wish to volunteer with Candlelighters. However, this role is not suitable for family members receiving support from Candlelighters. Overview

In partnership with a second, and possibly third Leader, you will lead a Fire (Group) of 8-12 Young
Explorers. As the Adventure Leader you will be responsible for the adventurous activities of the
Fire during the expedition programme, within the parameters set by the Chief Leader, and where applicable the Senior Adventure Leader.

We are looking for applicants who are:

• Able and passionate about leading, inspiring, and facilitating sessions with young people.
• Comfortable spending extended periods in remote and sometimes harsh environments.
• Able to commit to all pre-expedition training events. 

As a charity, all Leader positions are undertaken on a voluntary basis and Leaders join for the intrinsic value of adventure, education, and personal development of young people.

• Travel and food expenses are available, to ensure as many people can attend as possible
• Taking part in campaign actions from home
• This may include writing emails and letters, making phone calls to companies, connecting with your MP and taking social media actions
• In addition to this, you can order leaflets and stickers to distribute locally for awareness raising
• And much more!

This flexible and rewarding role is perfect for those looking to make a difference for farmed animals but without a strict time commitment. Around 4-6 hours a month is the average for this role, depending on how much you choose to get involved with.

• Plan, organise and deliver creative fundraising activities (raffles, online quizzes, challenge events, etc.)

• Engage and support individual fundraisers (e.g. sponsored runners, event hosts)

As a Grassroots Organiser, you will change animal lives by:

• Organising events and actions in your local area
• These will include peaceful protests, public outreach, social meet-ups and leafleting.
• Ideally you will organise 1 event every 1-2 months
• We will provide you with all the support and materials you need, as well as covering relevant expenses
• Growing a community of advocates by promoting your events and encouraging others to join you, bringing people together for the animals to create change
• Joining us at national events organised by staff team

You’ll be responsible for creating and coordinating an annual calendar of events and making sure they’re run safely and effectively to make the most impact. You’ll take a lead role at events on the day and inspire your fellow volunteers to get involved.

In this role you’ll be able to develop your organisation, communication, administration and negotiation skills. 

Time commitment

We estimate this role will need around 2 hours a week. Our roles are flexible and aim to fit around you. Time commitments for this role may vary depending on your activities. This is an ongoing role.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

The role: Our scholars are eager to meet graduates and professionals who can support them in achieving their ambitions. Mentors are mainly responsible for providing support and career advice to pupils. These events include our scholar enrichment days, our parent and pupil information sessions and our volunteer social events which are held in London. 

Availability: Mentors must be available for approximately 2-3 hours a month to meet with their mentee, and discuss via phone, email or in person. There is a minimum commitment of one year (three terms).

In addition to this, you will need to support a minimum of 2 events throughout the year. Enrichment and skill-building events for our scholars usually take place in the evenings and at weekends, with events ranging from 2-8 hours in length.

Location: Mentoring sessions and events can take place online or in person.

Responsibilities: 

• Working collaboratively with parents to give students guidance and advice on how to achieve their aspirations

• Informing pupils of opportunities to them so that they can achieve their aspirations

• Meeting with pupils for one to one mentoring sessions

• Supporting pupils with university, sixth form or job applications

• Monitoring and reporting on each pupils progress

• Giving feedback to parents and programme coordinators

• Working collaboratively with other tutors and mentors

• Supporting at events including:

  • Collaborate effectively with other volunteers within the events team

  • Assist with setting up and clearing up at events

  • Support workshop facilitators with managing groups of young people or parents

  • Assist with the coordination of lunch or refreshments for attendees

  • Assist the event coordinator with ensuring the health and safety of attendees and overall risk management at events

  • Give feedback to the event coordinators and programme managers at the end of each event.

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

• Enjoy working with children and young people

• Be educated to a minimum of degree level or equivalent

• Possess strong communication skills both written and verbal

• Be punctual and organised

• Be able to remain calm under pressure

• Have excellent time management skills
