Exeter-based cancer charity, Force, is well known and much loved for its incredible work supporting people who have had a cancer diagnosis and their families with a range of support. Their longstanding CEO is now retiring and the search has begun to find that special person to lead the charity into the future. We are delighted and honoured to be supporting the Board with this important appointment.
The current CEO has worked hard to ensure that the nurturing and caring aspect of the charity’s work is reflected across the organisation. You can see this in the way that everyone is treated – clients, families, staff, volunteers, supporters and trustees. We are looking for someone who understands and upholds these values but equally has the resilience and clarity of thought to navigate through the complex landscape of cancer services and support. You will have held a senior leadership role within the voluntary sector for at least two years and understand the legal framework within which charities operate. Previous experience of working with a voluntary Board of trustee/directors will be hugely helpful and, naturally, you will be financially astute.
Of course, you will be an inspiring and confident communicator, able to engage with and present to a range of audiences as well as working with local media.

About the Institute
IFST is the leading professional body for those involved in all aspects of food science and technology.
As a charity and independent professional body, IFST is in a prime position to provide impartial, science-based information. In addition to publishing peer-reviewed papers, guides, periodicals and reports, we host events, webinars, lectures and conferences throughout the year.
We also aim to be a source of professionalism in our field that reflects the dynamic and innovative nature of food science and technology. We provide independent professional recognition of knowledge and skills. Our professional registers and accreditation schemes are widely recognised and valued throughout the sector as the benchmark for skills and expertise for food technical professionals.
IFST is guided in its decision-making and activities by its five values and through a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Values:
- Evidence-based - All that we do and deliver is based on evidence. This fundamental principle lies at the very core of IFST’s consciousness. We provide scientific evidence that the public, policymakers and our members can trust and use.
- Professional - We aim to be a repository of professionalism in our field of food science and technology and to ensure our profession serves the public. We demand and expect professionalism from our members whether drawn from academia, industry or the public sector.
- Innovative - Food science and technology is, by nature dynamic and innovative. Whilst a serious subject and with serious implications, it is exciting and fun. We will seek to reflect this dynamism in the way we work and communicate with others. We will therefore be responsive to the constantly changing environment in which we work and to the needs of our members and stakeholders.
- Independent - Our independent position and voice is critical and is what we are valued and respected for. We will ensure our governance, agendas and outputs are based on the best and most complete evidence available and, in gathering this evidence, we will not be unduly influenced by any single views or commercial pressures. We will build trust by being open about all our decision-making processes.
- Food Science Community - We value our members as a community of food scientists and technologists. We respect and value the diversity of our membership and all that this diversity brings. We seek to learn from each other and always encourage a friendly, approachable, inclusive and supportive spirit from all who work for and with us.

Southmead Hospital Charity is the official NHS charity for North Bristol NHS Trust. Together with the local community, we raise funds to help our hospitals go beyond what the NHS can afford - supporting major innovations in healthcare, alongside the small things that make a big difference during a stay in hospital. After successfully delivering two major funding priorities in 2023 – and launching a third in March 2024 - we’re on the hunt for an experienced and dynamic Head of Fundraising and Communications to help take our much-loved charity to the next level.
In this high-impact role, you will join the main leadership of the charity with responsibility for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy that enables the organisation to deliver fundraising priorities and diversify its income portfolio.
As a target-driven and highly motivated fundraising leader, you’ll provide excellent leadership, direction and support for the fundraising team in the achievement of financial targets and objectives.
You will play a key role in developing a communications and engagement strategy for the charity, supporting the Marketing and Communications Lead to increase the visibility of our charity, expand our audiences and strengthen engagement across our digital platforms.
Experienced with data and financial management, you will set budgets and the annual fundraising plan. You will work with the management team to report against agreed targets and monitor KPIS and help to maintain an accurate and up to date database.
We’re a fun and friendly team, passionate about raising funds to enhance healthcare for our local communities. If you’re a collaborative team player with experience working in complex environments and engaging stakeholders at all levels, we’d love to hear from you.
