The Finance Officer will work with the finance team to manage weekly book-keeping, keeping financial records, preparing quarterly reports, and helping with budgeting and forecasting processes, as a member of Ethical Consumer, the UK’s longest running alternative consumer organisation.

Director of Finance and Systems

Are you a qualified accountant with experience at a senior level in a finance role?

We are looking for a Director of Finance and Systems to join the Strategy Team, responsible for shaping the organisations long-term strategy and financial sustainability.

Position: Director of Finance and Systems

Location: Hybrid working: two days a week in the Bolton or London offices (based in White City) combined with home-working and travel across our Youth Zone network as required.

Salary: £80,000 - £85,000 per annum

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week)

Contract: Permanent

About the Role

As a key member of the Executive Team, you will partner closely with the CEO and Board of Trustees to develop and deliver a financially resilient and scalable organisation, supporting both the charity’s and its growing national network of independent Youth Zone charities.

You will lead the organisation’s finance, systems and data capability ensuring strong financial stewardship, high-quality insight for decision-making, and efficient, innovative ways of working.

About You

You will be a fully qualified accountant (CCAB recognised) with strong leadership skills and the ability to develop team members to their full potential

You will have experience of

• Working at a senior level in a finance role with responsibility across the whole finance function (ideally also including responsibility for the systems function)
• Substantial financial leadership across scaling organisation or multi-entity structure spanning organisational planning, analysis and improvement, ideally a national-level charity
• Effective collaborative working with senior colleagues at Executive and Board Level

The opportunity

As Director of Finance, you will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic financial leadership across the charity and its trading subsidiary.

You will ensure robust financial management, governance and compliance while helping shape organisational strategy and supporting sustainable growth. This role offers the opportunity to influence decisions at the highest level and play a critical role in delivering our long-term ambitions.

Leading an established finance team, you will oversee all aspects of finance operations, risk management and financial planning, ensuring our systems and processes are fit for the future.

What you'll be doing

Providing strategic financial leadership to the organisation and Board of Trustees.

• Leading budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes.
• Producing high-quality management information and financial reporting.
• Overseeing statutory accounts preparation and external audit processes.
• Ensuring compliance with charity, company and tax regulations.
• Managing treasury activities and financial risk, including fraud prevention.
• Developing robust financial systems, controls and processes.

About you

You will be a qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with significant senior financial leadership experience and a track record of delivering strategic and operational excellence.

You will bring:

• Strong experience in financial leadership within complex organisations.
• Expertise in management and statutory accounting.
• Experience of leading audits, treasury management and regulatory compliance.
• Outstanding leadership and people development skills.

The figure has risen year-on-year for eight consecutive years, highlighting the scale of a challenge that continues to affect young people across the UK. We bring together the UK property industry, harnessing its capital, assets, skills and networks to help end youth homelessness. The Chief Financial and Operating Officer plays a critical role in helping us achieve our ambitions. A key member of the Leadership Team, you will ensure we have the financial insight, operational effectiveness and governance frameworks needed to deliver our strategy successfully. A key priority will be to provide high-quality management information, analysis and forecasting that supports confident decision-making across the organisation.

We are looking for a qualified accountant who brings senior finance leadership experience, either at executive director level within an organisation of similar scale or at deputy director level within a larger organisation. Experience within the charity sector would be valuable, as would knowledge of the built environment, capital investment or social investment. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who combines technical expertise with a collaborative leadership style; someone colleagues trust, learn from and enjoy working with.
