The Stuart Hall Foundation is inspired by the life’s work of Professor Stuart Hall in the interlocking worlds of activism, academia and the arts. Hall’s work was characterised by its breadth and its interdisciplinary nature, spanning across cultural studies, media theory, political analysis, and the study of race and identity.
The Foundation was formally launched in 2015 by Hall’s family, friends and colleagues in order to commemorate his legacy by attending to the urgent political, social and cultural questions of our time.

Our mission is to popularise critical thought by reshaping public discourse and by supporting the development of a new generation of artists, academics and activists who are dedicated to challenging issues of inequality.

- We create free-to-access digital learning resources including recorded lectures and conversations, podcasts, written essays and artistic commissions.

Our organisation is now at a moment of transition, and we are looking to recruit a new Chair of Trustees. We have been successful in recent grant funding applications, and as a result the Foundation has been able to expand its activities and is financially secure for the next two years. The new Chair of Trustees will continue to build and lead the Foundation with a distinct identity as a public education charity working in service of social justice.
Chair of Trustees
We are looking to appoint a new Chair who has a demonstrable commitment to the Foundation with the ability to lead and manage a unique and growing national charity.
The Chair has responsibility for providing oversight, shaping strategy and working collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to further develop the organisation’s vision for the next three to five years. The Chair will also support the Vice Chair in overseeing financial management and external relations. The role is not accompanied by any financial remuneration.
We are proud of the work we have achieved so far, having partnered with higher education and cultural institutions, organised many public events and provided scholarships, fellowships, awards and residencies.

The Diana Award is a charity legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales’ belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better. Since 1999, over 47,000 young people have been recognised with The Diana Award for making an outstanding difference in their communities’ across the globe.
With the support of HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry, The Diana Award aims to inspire and recognise social action in young people by going beyond its original Awards programme with three additional youth led initiatives that emphasize a peer led approach.

WHY WE ARE RECRUITING
Our Board of Trustees is committed, diverse, and values led. We have strong foundations in strategic leadership and finance. However, a recent skills audit highlighted areas we now wish to strengthen as we continue to evolve.
We are therefore seeking up to four Trustees with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Fundraising and Income Generation
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Education Sector
- Social Sustainability
- Marketing, PR, or Communications
- Legal and Compliance
We are particularly keen to hear from diverse leaders and individuals with lived experience related to our mission.
Please note: All applications must have the right to volunteer as a trustee in the UK. As part of our safeguarding commitments, all trustee appointments are voluntary and subject to a UK Enhanced DBS check, which must be satisfactorily completed before confirmation of the role.
THE ROLE OF A TRUSTEE
As a Trustee, you will be part of a Board that sets the strategic direction and ensures robust governance of the charity. You will work in partnership with the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team to oversee the delivery of our objectives and safeguard the charity’s future. Training and support will be provided for all new trustees.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Trustees are expected to:
- Ensure compliance with Charity Commission regulations and governance best practice
- Uphold the charity’s vision, values, and legal and financial integrity
- Provide strategic oversight and challenge to plans, budgets and risks
- Support income generation through networking, advocacy or fundraising
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the charity’s work
- Attend and contribute to Board and sub-committee meetings
COMMITMENT
- A three-year term, renewable once
- About of 2 hours per month, which breaks down as:
- Four board meetings per year (2.5 hours each, usually 5pm–7.30pm)
- One full-day annual strategy session
- Optional participation in events or subcommittees

DESIRABLE SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
One or more of the following:
- Fundraising and Income Generation - In an increasingly competitive and uncertain funding environment, we need trustees who can help us think creatively and strategically about income generation. This includes drawing on networks, identifying new opportunities, and supporting innovative fundraising approaches that will strengthen our financial resilience and enable us to deliver long-term impact for young people. We are also looking for a new Trustee to chair our new Income Generation sub-committee.
- Mental Health & Wellbeing - With youth mental health at a critical point, we seek trustees with expertise from educational, therapeutic, or public health settings to guide evidence-based strategies that help young people thrive.
- Education Sector - As our work is deeply rooted in schools and learning environments, we value trustees with knowledge of the education sector. Your insight will help us navigate its priorities and challenges, forge strong partnerships, and ensure our programmes complement and enhance the role of education in young people’s lives.
- Social Sustainability - We are seeking trustees who understand how to build inclusive cultures, systems, and communities. Your expertise will help us embed equity and belonging across our organisation, partnerships, and programmes, ensuring every young person feels seen, valued, and able to thrive.
- Marketing, PR, or Communications - We need trustees with senior-level experience in communications, marketing, or public/government relations to help amplify our voice, strengthen our brand, and influence key audiences. Your skills will ensure our message resonates with supporters, partners, and decision-makers.
- Legal and Compliance - Robust governance is critical to maintaining the trust of our stakeholders and the integrity of our work. We are seeking trustees with expertise in legal and compliance matters to help us navigate an evolving regulatory landscape, manage risk effectively, and ensure our policies and practices meet the highest standards.
GOVERNANCE
The Board is chaired by Rebecca Crook and supported by a strong leadership team including CEO Dr Tessy Ojo CBE. The Nominations Committee, a sub-committee of the Board, leads the trustee recruitment process. We are committed to inclusive recruitment and welcome candidates from all backgrounds. Purpose: The primary purpose of the Nominations Committee is to identify, evaluate, and recommend candidates for appointment as Trustees of The Diana Award. This committee ensures that the Board has the appropriate mix of skills, expertise, and diversity to effectively govern the organisation and fulfil its mission.
Membership: The Chair of the Nominations Committee (a Trustee) A minimum of two other Trustees CEO (ex officio member) Any additional members as deemed necessary (e.g., board secretary or HR support)

These roles are voluntary; however, the Charity does require a level of commitment for the role. Our Trustees and Governors meet up to 4 evenings per year for full Board / Governor meetings. Raising Futures Kenya is looking for an enthusiastic, committed Trustee, with a passion for supporting our small but mighty international NGO through a journey of shifting power to our partner NGO. We are particularly looking for individuals with experience in fundraising in the international development sector, and a strong understanding of the international fundraising landscape.
Responsible to: Chair, Raising Futures Kenya
Purpose: To guide and advise on the international fundraising landscape, and shifting the power (including fundraising) to our Kenyan partners.
Hours: Approximately 6-8 hours a month.
Salary: This is a voluntary role.
We currently have seven Trustees across the UK, USA and Kenya and three paid, part-time staff. Board meetings are every 6-8 weeks in the evening via Google Meet.
About Raising Futures Kenya
For 22 years, Raising Futures Kenya (England & Wales charity no.1181670) has worked alongside local people, and our partner NGO, in Kenya to develop projects which are owned by the community and create long-term, sustainable change to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods.
Through our Seed of Hope training and support programme we enable 14-25 year olds (75% girls) to secure employment or start a small business, generating enough income to live above the poverty line. We provide free technical vocational and business skills training, alongside mental health and wellbeing support which has led to over 90% of graduates being in employment, self-employment or further education. Seed of Hope offers young people opportunity, dignity and hope.
All training is combined with 3 key elements of support which makes our project unique and more successful than vocational training alone.
1. Daily life skills and mental health wellbeing curriculum which includes topics on common mental health issues to challenge stigma and signpost students to the free counselling sessions we offer, gender equality, knowing and asserting your rights, family planning, health, hygiene and nutrition.
2. Practical help is provided to ensure we remove any barriers young people may face in gaining an education and attending lessons, such as; free cooked lunches, support with travel costs, childcare vouchers for young mothers and free menstrual hygiene packs.
3. Graduate support helps young people set up their own business and generate a sustainable income. This includes tailored business and financial literacy training, access to the Seed of Hope Business Hub providing computers, tools, and materials for graduates to use to launch their business, plus an ongoing peer mentoring scheme from former successful Seed of Hope graduates.
If students are traumatised, hungry or can’t afford sanitary products, they won’t be in a position to learn. We treat every student as an individual and personalise our support to their specific needs and circumstances to set every student up for success. We know this holistic approach is more successful than vocational training alone, and has the most meaningful impact for young people.
Achievements
Some of our achievements include:

Over 3,100 young people in Kenya have received free skills training.

Since 2021 we now support more young people in a year than our first 15 years combined.

91% of our graduates are in full time employment, self-employment or further education.

Received multi-year funding from the Department for International Development (now FCDO) and other reputable grant givers, including a US funder who has granted us $100,000USD a year to go directly to our Kenyan partner as part of our journey to shift power to our partner.

Awarded the ‘Small Charity, Big Impact’ award by the Foundation of Social Improvement 2019 for achieving disproportionate impact to our size.

Role Summary
Responsibilities of all Trustees

Ensuring the organisation pursues its charitable objects (purposes), as defined in its governing document.

Ensuring strategic objectives are developed and met in order to provide greater public benefit, namely to the young people and communities we work alongside in Kenya.

Ensuring that the organisation complies with its governing document (i.e. constitution or memorandum and articles of association), charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

Ensuring that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuit of its charitable objects (i.e. the charity must not spend money on activities that are not included in its own objects, however worthwhile or charitable those activities are) for the benefit of the public.

Ensuring that the organisation defines its goals and evaluates performance against agreed targets.

Safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation.

Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation, including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.

Networking and partnership development

All Trustees are expected to assist Raising Futures Kenya to secure a sustainable and diverse funding base for the organisation, from seeking funding opportunities to galvanising personal and professional networks to generate income.

Act as a proud ambassador for Raising Futures Kenya, representing the charity at meetings and facilitating networking and funding opportunities as these arise.

Join relevant networks and associations to further your understanding of the sector we are in, and to promote the work and best practices of the charity.
Advise on fundraising

Support the strategic direction of how funds are raised by the UK and Kenya, in terms of shifting the power.

Provide direct feedback to fundraising staff on approaches, bids or key organisations.

Link Raising Futures Kenya with key contacts or organisations in the fundraising sector.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience;

Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre is a dynamic creative hub located on the edge of Bodmin Moor in South-East Cornwall. Our unique 4-acre site is where creativity meets nature at Cornwall's geographical and cultural gateway. Our 500-seat Barn Theatre hosts a diverse range of performances, including theatre, dance, comedy, and live music. Our newly refurbished 70-seat Studio and Community Hub, opening in April 2025, will centre around creativity and community, providing a regular programme of activity and performances for people of all ages.

Charity Structure & Responsibilities
Sterts Arts & Environmental Centre (CIO Number 1189424) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), and in 2024, Sterts Theatre (CIC Number 15422924) was established as a Community Interest Company (CIC), wholly owned by the charity. The charity is looking to appoint more directors to its operational arm, focusing on the theatre operation and programming, events and other activities.
What is a Trustee?
Trustees/Directors must be at least 16 years old. While Trustees/Directors are unpaid, we’ll cover reasonable travel or support costs connected to your role. If you’d like to check anything in advance, feel free to ask.
Trustee Responsibilities
As a Trustee, you will be responsible under Charity Law for overseeing key areas such as employment, health & safety, and financial management. In particular, you will:
- Ensure the charity is fulfilling its purpose for public benefit.
- Comply with Sterts’ governing document and legal obligations.
- Act in the best interests of Sterts and its community.
- Manage Sterts' resources responsibly.
- Use reasonable care and skill in your role.

Commitment and Culture
Our Board meets formally six times a year, but being a trustee is more than just turning up to meetings. It’s about being part of a creative, collaborative, and supportive group that enjoys working together, celebrates successes, and tackles challenges with openness. The pace can vary, sometimes calm, sometimes busy, but always with the shared goal of helping Sterts flourish.
Expectations
As a Trustee, we ask you to:
- Attend six face-to-face meetings per year (typically 2 hours each)
- Participate in occasional extra meetings, both in-person and online
- Act as an advocate for Sterts and its work within the community
- Engage in discussions, making informed decisions, even when these may involve differing views
- Stay informed about Sterts’ activities by reading Board papers and relevant materials.
- Give practical support where possible and regularly attend shows and events
