Finance Assistant: Income

About the role:

The British Museum is seeking a Finance Assistant: Income to work as part of the Income function of the Finance Department. This is an integral role to ensure that cash is accurately counted and banked, financial data is accurate and that the service provided to departments is of a high standard.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Cash handling:
    • Participating in weekly cash donations collections throughout the Museum, including test counts
    • Completing weekly count of retail takings, ordering of change and reconciling change float in safe reserve
    • Preparation and processing Cash advances for employees and Per diem orders, including processing the returns whilst ensuring compliance with Museum group policy
    • Process petty cash expenses claim from employees as well as weekly GBP and foreign petty cash reconciliation
  • Financial administration:
    • Recover, check and input GPC returns to the GL, ensuring compliance with Museum group policy and that all required supporting documents are attached
    • Issue invoices and debt collection for one of our entities
    • Identify errors and inconsistencies in GL data and prepare correcting journals
    • Assist in maintaining departmental records, files and archives (both electronic and physical)
  • Other:
    • Perform month end account reconciliations as directed
    • Provide accurate and timely analysis as directed, including on cash donations, cash advances and aged debt

About you:

  • A Levels, AAT or equivalent experience
  • Experience of working in a finance team
  • Knowledge of straightforward accounting principles and procedures
  • Able to work swiftly and accurately with figures, maintaining consistency and accuracy in processing a high volume of transactions
  • IT literate with excellent input and spreadsheet skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and able to work under pressure
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ideally you will also have previous experience of operating an accounting package
