SolarAid is recruiting for a Director of Finance & Organisational Effectiveness to lead our finance function and enhance operational excellence across our charity and social enterprise group. The position is full-time, based in the UK, with hybrid working arrangements. The salary offered is £60,000 to £68,000 depending on experience.

About the Degrees Initiative  

The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth. Degrees is neutral on whether SRM should ever be used, but we believe that developing countries should be empowered to conduct their own research and to play a central role in SRM discussions.  

Degrees’ programmatic work is centred on capacity-building through research grants and North–South and South-South collaboration schemes, outreach activities, and cross-cutting community-building. As part of this, Degrees runs workshops in the Global South that bring new voices into the SRM conversation, and our research funds support scientists and other experts in developing countries as they research what SRM could mean for their regions and become part of a global research community.

Context of Job

AFK is a national charity helping young disabled people develop their independence and find employment. Our vision is a world where all people living with a disability get to lead the life they choose. As part of this we provide bespoke employment skills training and organise work placements across North London.

At a national level, we provide mobility equipment not available on the NHS for disabled children and young people up to the age of 25. The Advocacy and Mobility Services Manager leads this service.

Overall Job Purpose

To develop and manage AFK’s Mobility Service including overseeing the progress of funding applications for mobility equipment, managing the waiting list and ensuring a quality service to our beneficiaries. The Advocacy and Mobility Services Manager will be responsible for providing advocacy support, enabling applicants to secure equipment from statutory services, where appropriate. They will also manage the maintenance and reallocation of AFK-owned powerchairs.

Working Conditions

The post is 21 or 28 hours a week, normally between 9am and 5pm. (We are Hybrid working organisation with 1 core day in the office and 2-3 days working from home, with core hours between 10am and 4pm).

Line Manager to the Fundraising and Mobility Officer

Close working relationships with mobility equipment suppliers

On a day-to-day basis there will be regular contact with beneficiaries and their families, mobility equipment suppliers and health professionals, as well as Service Delivery and Fundraising Managers.

On-going contact with grant giving organisations and associated bodies.

Principal Responsibilities

1. To develop policies to support the direction of AFK’s Mobility Services, in relation to criteria for funding equipment, guidance on managing the waiting lists and the provision of loaned/ beneficiary owned equipment etc.

2. To identify applicants for mobility funding who could access statutory funds. To provide advocacy support to those families including submitting formal letters of complaint to NHS Trusts and/or taking legal advice. To monitor savings to the Mobility budget, as a direct result of advocacy intervention.

3. To ensure the mobility equipment budget is spent appropriately by developing and implementing funding criteria, negotiating competitive rates with suppliers, encouraging families to consider a range of options for high end equipment and ensuring statutory services support funding where appropriate.

4. To line manage the Fundraising and Mobility Officer to enable her/him to progress applications for mobility grants, from initial enquiry to order and delivery of equipment.

 5. To provide AFK’s Fundraising and Communications teams with data and feedback from families and to identify potential case studies.

6. To support selected applicants with individual fundraising, including applying to Trusts and charities and writing to businesses.

7. To monitor the funds raised by AFK’s individual fundraising activity.

8. To keep abreast of changes in the field for example: developments among competitors and pricing in the market; progress of the NHS England wheelchair campaign; and changes to Clinical Commissioning Groups’ criteria.

9. To provide families with information to enable them to make a decision about whether to apply for funding.

10. To liaise with other grant giving charities to keep up-to-date with changes in the field and to ensure part funding is provided effectively.

11. To ensure AFK’s equipment grant application form is clear and up-to-date and that the process is managed in a timely and efficient way.

12. To oversee the development and maintenance of systems for recording the grant application process.

13. To manage the maintenance and repair of loaned powerchairs, developing procedures for reallocating chairs and/or passing ownership on to beneficiaries.

14. To supervise the Fundraising and Mobility Officer to develop systems for monitoring and reporting on maintenance expenditure.

15. To undertake other relevant responsibilities as required by the Executive Director of Services.

The IPO will work closely with the Immigration Supervising Solicitor (ISS), Director and general admin team to progress and maintain the SIAS project. Where appropriate, the IPO will arrange appointments, attend triage sessions off-site and liaise with referring agencies to ensure that caseworkers can advance casework as efficiently as possible.

The Strategic Programme Director will be responsible for contributing to and supporting the Bishop’s Senior Staff Team and key lay and ordained leaders in the delivery of the diocesan strategy. Working as part of the Development Team, to plan and execute effective fundraising strategies for Derby Theatre. The role will have a particular focus on copywriting for trusts and foundations, cultivating donor relationships and coordinating and developing Derby Theatres’ Friends scheme.  The Development Officer will also deputise for the Head of Development as required.

Key responsibilities

Trusts and Foundations

· Conduct research into possible funding streams for funding priorities.

· Assist in the production of funding reports for existing supporters.

· Update the reporting schedule, to include deadlines.

Attend networking events to build relationships and take responsibility for cultivating prospects, developing relevant proposals and key messaging and overseeing the administration relating to corporate supporters.

Development Events

• Organise, manage and attend supporters’ evenings including liaising with front of house and catering staff, and managing the guest list.

Administration

· Support the development and executive teams by preparing briefing notes, and research profiles for the fundraising activity.

· Assist the Head of Development in keeping the team informed with any legislation or trends development within fundraising.

· Maintain accurate records on Spektrix and the shared drive, as well as keeping efficient paper files and audit trails where appropriate and make sure financial data is accurate and funds are received timely.

· Liaise with all teams to ensure that project information and budgets are up to date.

· Update the website and printed materials with the relevant fundraising information and credits.

· Support on the collation of data for applications and reports, including Arts Council England reporting.

General

· To actively support and promote Derby Theatre’s Learning Theatre model, including a commitment to engage with the University of Derby’s Theatre-related higher education provision; to contribute to learning opportunities such as work experience, placements, and the theatre’s role as a learning environment.

· To keep up to date with developments in the industry as they relate to your role, and to contribute to the overall development of the department and organisation.

· To take an active role in the team and staff as a whole, and to attend team, departmental or cross-organisation meetings as required.

· To ensure that Derby Theatre’s policies, procedures and values are observed in every area of the department’s work.

· To act always in the best interests of Derby Theatre, always protecting intellectual property and confidential information.

· To carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required from time to time, commensurate with the level of the post.

The role is a two day a week commitment. (16 hours) £150 per day.  We are flexible on working from home but would prefer that at least one of the two days is at the office with the other two staff members, our Office Administrator and CEO.

It involves –

Monitoring and recording all income for the charity

Sourcing funding, at present primarily from Trusts and Foundation or individuals

Collaborating with the office team on other fundraising initiatives and events

Support the delivery of digital fundraising activities

Being a small team, other tasks may come up from time to time

Exploring and obtaining fundraising from Corporate entities.

It requires –

A good knowledge of a CRM database, preferably Advantage nfp

Good writing and communication skills

Someone with attention to detail

Someone who can work flexibly in a team.
