Executive Director

We have an exciting opportunity for an Executive Director to lead a small charity who work within the Jewish community to make it more inclusive of LGBT+ people through education, consultancy and training.

Position: Executive Director

Location: London (King Cross) / Hybrid (minimum one day a week in the office)

Salary: FTE £47,000 to £53,000 per annum depending on experience

About the role:

As Executive Director you will lead a small team – Head of Education (full time), Head of Community Life (full time) and Programme and Volunteer Officer (full time), working with a charity that has a vision of a world where no one is forced to choose between their LGBT+ and Jewish identity.

As the only charity doing this in the UK, the charity works in partnership with communities to identify their goals, then tailor  support so they can achieve them.

Key responsibilities of the Executive Director:

• Delivering the organisation’s priorities as laid out in the 2022-2027 strategy
• Ensuring financial sustainability through devising and executing a fundraising strategy and carefully managing the organisational budget

• Sensitive, compassionate leadership and management of the professional team
• Working in close partnership with the Board of Trustees
• Effective accounting and governance

About you:

• The ability to speak and write confidently and authentically about LGBT+ issues
• Strategic leadership, planning and decision-making experience in a commercial, not-for-profit or public service setting
• Line management experience, including the ability to inspire and empower a staff team
• Understanding of the charity and voluntary sector, including the funding environment in which charities operate
• Highly effective relationship-builder across multiple arenas (internal stakeholders, external partners, funders etc)
• Knowledge and experience of strategic planning and business development, including operational planning and delivery management
• Knowledge and working experience of organisational finance and budget planning cycles
• Experience working with, and preferably in, the UK Jewish community

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director is responsible for shaping and driving the work of the organisation, in line with its mission, vision, and strategic plan.

The Executive Director’s key responsibilities are:

Organisational leadership and governance 

• Shape, drive and champion the organisation's vision, strategy and big picture thinking

We are looking for a motivated, creative, and organised Engagement and Communications Officer to join our team. This role is a unique opportunity for someone with a passion for building a fairer legal system through impactful events, engaging member outreach, and powerful communications. Working alongside the Director of Development and the Head of Communications, this role will work across teams to maintain and strengthen engagement through events, communications and corporate outreach. You will play an integral role in communicating our work as widely as possible and improving and increasing engagement with our supporters, including our members, donors and corporate partners.

The Engagement and Communications Officer will work to maximise income and support for JUSTICE through events (approximately 45% of the role), communications (approximately 30% of the role) and membership (approximately 25% of the role). They will report to the Director of Development and Head of Communications.

The JUSTICE team currently work in a hybrid manner. Staff members have access to office space in London, however, attendance is currently optional. Job Description Chief Executive Officer

This is a part time role with a fixed term contract of twelve months in the first instance.  The intention is that funding will be sourced to extend the role.  

Given the close connection with women who have faced trauma and experienced violence and the faith-based nature of the culture there are Genuine Occupational Requirements (as set out in the Equality Act 2010) for the postholder to be a woman and actively supportive of the Christian faith.

About the Role​

RUSI’s Terrorism and Conflict team is looking to recruit an expert in the field of terrorism to provide maternity cover for the research group starting from July. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can generate funding and lead the team’s diverse work portfolio, while reporting directly to RUSI’s Deputy Director‑General.

​

We are particularly interested in candidates with an interest in developing funded research projects in the following areas:

• The intersection between violent extremism and conflict including integrated P/CVE responses.
• State threats and social extremism including misinformation and disinformation.
• International terrorism related to jihadi groups, the transnational far right and other relevant groups, networks and movements.

​

These areas will complement the team’s existing portfolio of work on CT and P/CVE, which includes research, policy advice, training and implementation. We work in the UK, Europe and a number of global ‘hotspots,’ including East and West Africa, Central and South Asia and the Balkans. We also run an active training programme on CT and CVE for diplomatic, development and civil society representatives.​

Our team encompasses 12 staff in London, Brussels and Nairobi and we work closely with an extensive range of consultants and associate fellows from the academic, diplomatic, development and practitioner worlds in the UK and internationally.

RUSI wishes to appoint an acting Research Director on a one-year fixed term contract to provide maternity cover for the Terrorism and Conflict Research Group. This could lead to a permanent research position if funding in the areas outlined above is secured during the year.

The role offers an exceptional opportunity for an individual with at least ten years of experience in the field of terrorism as a researcher, policymaker or practitioner. It is essential that the successful candidate has a strong track record of business development and of securing significant funding. The role involves significant management responsibility including oversight of RUSI’s office in Nairobi and management of T&C’s team in RUSI Europe. We are therefore particularly interested in candidates with significant management experience.

The​Director will report to the Deputy Director-General, and will​be responsible for the following:

1. Management responsibilities: much of the role is focused on management-related activities including management of the team’s portfolio of work and income and responsibility for meeting financial budgets set by RUSI; line management of staff in London, Brussels and Nairobi, management of the RUSI Nairobi Office and a role in managing RUSI Europe as a board member; and other management related responsibilities where relevant.
    
2. Business development and fundraising: All T&C’s work is project funded. Business development is the top priority for the year in line with the topics identified. The requirement will be to develop concepts for new research projects; identify potential customers, stakeholders and sources of funding; write applications/proposals for research funding; and develop a network of potential funders and beneficiaries.
    
3. Team development: responsibility for developing the capacity and expertise of all team members, particularly junior researchers, to improve their knowledge base and develop their skills in designing and writing research proposals; overseeing and implementing research projects; research skills; academic and policy writing; public speaking; and event organisation.
    
4. Conducting research on terrorism and counter-terrorism: conducting primary and secondary research on terrorism for a range of customers/clients in the UK and overseas; writing and communicating research outputs (published papers, analytical reports, commentaries, conference papers, presentations etc.); editing, supervising and quality control of the outputs of other researchers (within RUSI and/or partner organisations); projecting RUSI’s research in academia, government, industry, and in the media (print, broadcast, social media).
    
5. Project management: ensuring that research projects are run effectively and efficiently and achieve their desired outcomes; conducting project risk assessments; liaising with beneficiaries, partners and funders; supervising the organisation of events and publications.
    
6. Developing skills; expertise and profile: maintaining and developing knowledge in relation to the evolving field of terrorism and CT; and developing a network of CT experts.

• Evidenced and nationally recognised expertise in terrorism, and at least 10 years of demonstrated experience working on these topics in a research, practitioner, or policy role.
• Demonstrated ability and track record in winning and delivering major projects in the UK and/or internationally, with the ability to lead major research project bids and identify new funding opportunities for RUSI.
• At least 5 years’ experience leading and managing diverse teams and budgets.

• Work with a range of internal and external contacts to identify, cultivate and manage prospective partnerships and existing relationships across all appropriate levels, including CEO's, Directors or Trustees.
• Manage risks across the Trusts sub team by following internal governance procedures, including where relevant SMT briefings, working with media/PR/internal audit/compliance to flag risks and manage mitigation strategies.

About You:

• Demonstrable track record in managing a successful trust and foundation income stream, ensuring team performance indicators and income targets are met.
• Proven ability to personally manage a successful trust and foundation portfolio raising funds from existing and new supporters (£500k+).
• Confidence in representing WaterAid externally at events, conferences and developing co-creation opportunities.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
