Overview of the role
The Chair of the Board of Trustees ensures that the organisation’s strategy seeks to address some of the most complex social and economic issues in London today by attracting the right partnerships and investments and ensuring that funds get to where they are needed most in the most effective, efficient and impactful manner.
The role holder ensures that this work is delivered with a strong focus on equity, diversity and inclusion and outstanding governance.
Principal Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Provide inspiring and inclusive leadership to the Board, helping define LCF’s strategic aims, and aligning these with its vision and values
- Lead on embedding DEI principles in Board culture and decisions, and fostering a culture of transparency, learning, collaboration, challenge, and accountability.
- Facilitate a constructive, purposeful, and productive dynamic between the Board and Executive team, supporting them in identifying and managing key organisational risks and mitigation strategies.
- Ensure the charity delivers maximum community impact through a sound strategy, strong governance, and continuous learning.
- Lead the Board in overseeing the financial resilience of the charity.
- Provide effective line management to the CEO.
Sound Governance and Compliance
- Work with the Chief Executive to shape the Board’s agenda, aligning governance with strategic priorities.
- Ensure the Board operates effectively and adheres to its legal and regulatory responsibilities and to best-practice governance principles.
- Encourage full, meaningful, and diverse participation at Board meetings and ensure Board decisions are evidence-informed, collectively owned, and implemented effectively.
- Lead on the annual appraisal of Trustees, on Board and Committee effectiveness, and on sound succession planning.
External Relations
- Act as a confident and credible representative of LCF; and support the Chief Executive in developing strategic relationships and enhancing the organisation’s profile and reputation.
- Promote external engagement and horizon scanning to identify emerging risks and opportunities for innovation.
- Engage with and listen to communities and partners across London to amplify under-represented voices.
Relationship with the Chief Executive
- Build a strong, supportive, and honest working relationship with the Chief Executive.

Term
The Chair will serve a three-year term, renewable for up to two additional terms (maximum of nine years).
Remuneration
The role of Chair is not accompanied by any financial remuneration, although expenses for travel may be claimed.
Time Commitment
The Chair role requires an estimated commitment of 15–18 days per year. This includes preparing for and attending four Board meetings annually, each held at LCF’s London office; participating in occasional extraordinary or quarterly sub-committee meetings; holding regular meetings with the Chief Executive; and representing the Foundation at key events or external engagements.

The RSPCA East London and Havering Branch aims to align its core objectives with those of the National RSPCA — specifically: to rescue, rehabilitate, rehome, and protect animals.
The RSPCA East London and Havering Branch CIO (the "Branch") is seeking to appoint new Trustees to join the Branch Trustee Committee. This is an exciting time for the Branch as we aim to grow and enhance our services across East and South East London.
What does the Branch do?
Our Branch covers postcodes within East and South East London (those beginning with E or RM). We operate boarding facilities where we care for, rehabilitate, and rehome cats rescued by RSPCA Inspectors.
We are an independent charity, working in partnership with the National RSPCA, a separate charity. Together, we deliver the RSPCA's mission — focused on frontline animal welfare and community engagement.
As an independent branch, we fundraise and manage our resources independently to deliver animal welfare services. We receive some financial support and guidance on best practices from the National RSPCA to ensure we comply with Charity Commission regulations.
Future Plans
In the coming years, our plans include:

Volunteering at Memory Walk is an incredible experience. You and hundreds of others across the country will help us to run 12 inspiring walks that raise vital funds, providing help and hope to people affected by dementia. Memory Walks simply couldn't happen without incredible volunteers, and we do our best to make it a day to remember.
There are three roles to choose from when volunteering at a Memory Walk:
- Event Site - Volunteer roles include selling merchandise and handing out medals at the finish line.
- Route Marshal - Route volunteers are essential to guide walkers and keep enthusiasm high. All route marshals will be paired, so you'll never be alone on the route.
- Back Markers - Back markers have the unique advantage of walking the whole route alongside our participants, taking down route signage and releasing route marshals along the way.
You can expect:
- A fantastic day outdoors in your local community.
- A face-to-face briefing from the Events Team before the event starts where you'll chat through your role for the day. There'll be plenty of time to ask any questions you may have.
- A chance to explore the event site and hang a tag on the Memory Walk Memory Tree in honour of your loved ones.
- Satisfaction, knowing that you're helping to raise vital funds and providing help and hope to people affected by dementia.
- Volunteer arrival time is typically 8:45am.
- You’ll need to be able to commit to around 6 hours of volunteering at the event. Don’t worry if you can’t stick around for the whole day, just make sure to get in touch with us to let us know your availability.

Do you have professional expertise you could use to help a good cause? Are you passionate about animal welfare? Trustees manage the affairs of our local RSPCA Branch to promote and provide animal welfare within the branch area.
We are the Surrey East Branch of the RSPCA, and it's our vision to live in a world where all animals are respected and treated with compassion.
Main activities:

To be familiar with and support the aims and policies of the RSPCA.

To be familiar with our branch rules and follow them at all times.

To work with your fellow trustees and branch officers to jointly act in making decisions for the best interest of our branch and the RSPCA.

To ensure the branch meets all the minimum animal welfare standards (MAWS). Where they are not met, work with national RSPCA staff to meet the standard as soon as practicable.

In conjunction with your fellow trustees and Branch support specialist (BSS), to write, adopt, monitor and review a branch development plan setting out the short and long-term aims of our branch.

To actively participate in branch committee meetings and attend the branch annual general meeting, and regional conference.

To be aware of the outcome of regional board meetings and support regional initiatives.

To attend the trustee training course.

To actively promote and advertise the society in an ongoing programme to recruit new branch trustees and volunteers.

About the RSPCA
We’re proud to be the oldest welfare charity in existence
- We were the first to introduce a law to protect animals and we work hard to ensure that all animals can live a life free from pain and suffering.

Through our campaigns we raise standards of care and awareness of issues for the animals who have no voice. We push for laws to be changed, improving the welfare of animals on farms, in research labs, in the wild, in paddocks or in our homes.

Through investigations and prosecutions, we stand up to those who deliberately harm animals to send out a clear message - we will not tolerate animal abuse.

Our highly trained officers tackle neglect and cruelty at every level and are working hard to stamp out large-scale serious, organised and commercial animal cruelty.

We believe every animal has the right to be counted as an individual. Animals can rely on us to rescue them when they need us most. To rehabilitate them wherever possible, provide them with the very best veterinary care and to find them new homes, either through rehoming or release.
What are we looking for?

Most people aged 18 or over are eligible to become a trustee. You will need to become a member of the RSPCA. Good interpersonal skills are important. You do not need to be an expert, although commitment, common sense and the ability to be objective is vital.

Specific skills such as finance, fundraising, project management, business experience, and awareness of employment and/or charity legislation can be useful, but not essential.
-
Trustees must sign a Trustee Declaration of Willingness to Act to clarify that they are not disqualified from being a trustee and that they accept the post.
-
In addition to our standard declaration of willingness, trustees also need to complete a declaration from the Charity Commission and read their guidance for individuals on who can’t be a trustee or senior manager of a charity.
