What are Serving Community Teams?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel and their families in the UK and overseas.
A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provides emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our Chair is the key part of the team, coordinating the activities of volunteers to ensure financial stability and a safe and effective volunteer service. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will collaborate with the other SCT volunteers to support them in their roles as well as working with employees in the Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT run well, are documented appropriately, and reported on annually.
Why we want you
Serving Community Teams (SCTs) offer financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel and their families at military bases both in the UK and overseas. Each SCT consists of a group of dedicated volunteers, working together to raise SSAFA’s profile, ensuring those who need support receive it. If you would like to lead and develop a SCT, we’d love to hear from you. Our SCT Chair is the key player, coordinating the activities of the volunteer team to deliver beneficiary support and ensure a safe, effective and financially stability SCT. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will support your SCT volunteers in their roles as well as working with employees in SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT are run well, documented and reported on annually.
What you will be doing
- Leading the volunteer team, ensuring SSAFA’s values, policies and procedures are followed.
- Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with the chain of command, local SSAFA branches and services, welfare services and other key stakeholders.
- Working closely with your volunteers to establish an annual plan of activities to include fundraising, awareness raising and support.
- Having oversight of all the functions of the SCT, ensuring beneficiaries receive effective support, and volunteers have an opportunity to regularly meet regularly.
- Reporting on the activities the SCT undertakes and their impact, ensuring annual reports are submitted.
- Promoting the work of SSAFA and the SCT, highlighting case studies and good news stories to employees in the SSAFA PR team and Serving Community Support Team.
- Being available to consider any grant applications when received.
- Working closely with employees in the Serving Community Support Team, building on volunteer recruitment and and sharing best practice.
The skills you need

Requirements
Volunteers need to be a minimum of 18 years old.
Time commitment
This role would suit someone who would like to volunteer a few hours each week. SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team are always available should you wish to discuss this further.
Support
Full training is provided for this role, with some e-learning modules online. You will be supported by SSAFA’s Serving Community Team Manager and Serving Community Support Team.

As a Front Desk Volunteer, you will be the welcoming face of Historic Croydon Airport, responsible for ensuring visitors have a smooth and enjoyable experience. You will manage visitor check-ins, handle donations, and support merchandising activities.
Responsibilities:

Greet visitors warmly at the front door or Reception desk.

Check if visitors have pre-booked and verify booking details.

Check the Lead Name off the booking list and confirm the number of visitors in the group.

Request a donation of £8 per adult on entry, payable by cash, credit card, cheque (to Historic Croydon Airport Trust), or QR code.

Ensure the donation process is completed.

Inform visitors of the location of toilets and answer any questions.

Ask visitors to wait in the Waiting Area until their Guide collects them.

Manage additional visitors, ensuring tour groups do not exceed 12 people, including the Tour Guide.
People without a Booking:

Politely inform visitors that entry is by pre-booking online.

Check the booking list for vacant slots and inform visitors of available times and spaces.

Advise visitors to book and return at the specified time, noting they cannot wait inside AH.

Allow visitors to wait outside for potential "no-shows" if they wish.

Be polite, sympathetic, but firm if turning people away, and provide the date of the next Open Day and booking details.

Set up and take down the HCAT Merchandise stall.

Run the merchandise stall, selling items to visitors.

Manage the float, monetary takings, cashing up, and recording total takings at the end of the day.

Ensure cash takings are not left unattended and hand them over to a Trustee at the end of the day.

Role Overview
We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Volunteers to join our new monthly drop in group in that take place on Hainault Forest Community Association, monthly on Thursdays. 11 an-1 pm starting on Thursday 9th Oct 2025. The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.
Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing.
Volunteers will support the running of the group with communicating, and will have the opportunity to utilise their communication skills and IT knowledge to take a register of attendance.
Responsibilities
- Provide companionship and support to individuals, particularly those living with asphasia.
- Assist in organising activities that promote social interaction and engagement.
- Communicate effectively with participants, ensuring their needs are understood and met.
- Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Collaborate with other volunteers to enhance the group.
Qualifications
- An understanding or knowledge in aphasia is desirable but not essential (training will be given)

- Trustees may be invited to attend Pony Club events such as the Championships, the Pony Club Conference, and Trustee away days.
- New Trustees will attend an induction at The Pony Club Office in Warwickshire and are expected to complete NCVO Charity Trustee Induction Training if new to the role of Trustee.
- The role is voluntary, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Rural Watch Africa Initiative (RUWAI) We restore degraded landscapes and empower rural communities with sustainable agriculture, beekeeping, and green livelihoods.
RUWAI tackles the urgent, interconnected challenges of deforestation, climate change vulnerability, and rural poverty in Africa. Many rural communities rely on unsustainable practices like slash-and-burn farming and illegal logging, leading to widespread land degradation, soil depletion, and increased desertification. This vulnerability, coupled with limited resources and high unemployment, forces many—especially youth and women—into destructive practices, worsening food insecurity and biodiversity loss, including the rapid decline of critical pollinators like bees.

Position Summary
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Volunteer Communication Officer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for someone who is eager to use storytelling, media engagement, and strategic communication to drive social and environmental impact.
Key Responsibilities: Develop and implement communication strategies to raise awareness of RUWAI’s work. Create compelling content (articles, social media posts, newsletters, press releases, donor reports). Manage and grow RUWAI’s social media platforms and online presence. In many areas SSAFA has Serving Community Teams which offer financial, practical, and emotional support to serving personnel and their families. Each team consists of a group of dedicated volunteers who make this possible. That’s where your skills come in. Could you spare some time to provide excellent administration support to the team of volunteers on a regular basis? The Administration Coordinator keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes. This is a key role involving organising and recording team meetings, supporting with general planning, and helping with events administration.
What you will be doing
- Providing administrative support for Serving Community Team meetings - at least four per year, held either in person or online. This includes sending invites and recording minutes.
- Working with the Chair and wider volunteer team to create an annual plan of activity based on local need.
- Supporting members of the team with general administration tasks. For example, helping with fundraising events, local engagement and publicity events.
- Responding to general enquiries to the SCT where needed.

The Treasurer has a key role to play in supporting the team making key decisions as we move the charity forward into the next phase.
About Long Covid SOS:
Long Covid SOS (LCSOS) is a charity set up for the advancement of health and relief of need among people with Long Covid.
“Long Covid” means post-acute Covid-19 syndrome, where symptoms and/or long-term complications occur beyond four weeks from initial infection or symptoms onset to include any post viral illness with a suspected or evidenced link to Covid-19.
LCSOS aims to raise awareness of Long Covid, its treatment, recovery and rehabilitation among health policymakers, healthcare providers and the general public.
To do this we advocate for and make it known to healthcare providers, health policymakers and other relevant policy makers the views and lived experience of members of the general public suffering from or affected by Long Covid. We also support research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Long Covid, and publish results of such research.
Main duties and responsibilities of the Treasurer:
· Advising the Board about its financial duties and responsibilities
· Advising the Board on the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements
· Advising on the financial implications of LCSOS strategic plans and key assumptions in the annual budget
· Ensuring that all Board members have a clear understanding of the accounts presented at meetings and their implications
· Understanding the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be able to assure the board that the charity’s financial integrity is sound
· Ensuring that a realistic budget is produced which meets the needs of LCSOS and that there is an appropriate reserves policy
· Approving and, where appropriate, advising the Board on unbudgeted expenditure proposals in accordance with LCSOS financial procedures
· Ensuring that full financial records are kept for all transactions
· Ensuring that proper financial procedures and controls are in place to safeguard LCSOS
· Ensuring that money received is only spent on the purposes for which I was given, and, where required, ensuring that reports and accounts demonstrating this are submitted to funders
· Ensuring that accounts are prepared at year-end in compliance with the Charities SORP (FRS102) and making arrangements for them to be audited or independently examined, as required by the Charity Commission
· Ensuring that annual accounts are submitted to the Charity Commission and/or Registrar of Companies, within the deadlines set
· Liaising with the Chair about financial matters
· Advising the Board on identifying and managing key risks effectively, and maintaining LCSOS’s risk register
· Leading on selecting and implementing a suitable financial accounting system
Personal skills and qualities:
· Commitment to the aim and goals of LCSOS
· Professional financial or accountancy qualifications or equivalent senior financial or accounting experience
· Experience or knowledge of charity finance
· Experience and knowledge of budgets and budgeting processes
· Ability to analyse proposals and anticipate their financial consequences
· Preparedness to make unpopular recommendations to the Board
· Willingness to be available to provide advice and guidance on financial matters
Other Information:
· The Treasurer is a full member of the Trustee Board
· Formal Trustee Board meetings are held online up to six times per year (or as required); Team meetings are held monthly and Trustees are invited to attend
· The Treasurer role requires approximately 2 – 4 hours work per month
· Trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years and can be reappointed
· This is an unpaid position and out of pocket expenses are reimbursed to Trustees

How does it work?
In 2025 we launched our arm chair volunteering initiative to help us spread the word about our service and to give people the opportunity to take part in surveys and projects to help us deliver the best mental health support to the UK public.
We'd like to embrace what you love doing, whether that be sharing on socials, proof reading, surveys, sharing experiences or getting involved in our fabulous projects.
Important information:
In order to volunteer for knus as an ambassador, you will need to complete a brief application form and a ID check. A DBS is not required for this role, however, if you wish to progress to another role you may need a disclosure. We do this to ensure of service remains a safe place to volunteer for all. Please do not worry about this, we will help you as much as we can.
Training is provided by us and our training partners. You will be required to attend this training using online conferencing software such as zoom or teams.

What are Serving Community Teams?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of SSAFA. SSAFA has developed Serving Community Teams for volunteers to support serving personnel and their families in the UK and overseas.
A Serving Community Team is run by a small team of volunteers on or near a British Armed Forces base which provides emotional, practical and financial support to the serving community. Our Chair is the key part of the team, coordinating the activities of volunteers to ensure financial stability and a safe and effective volunteer service. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will collaborate with the other SCT volunteers to support them in their roles as well as working with employees in the Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT run well, are documented appropriately, and reported on annually.
Why we want you
Serving Community Teams (SCTs) offer financial, practical and emotional support to serving personnel and their families at military bases both in the UK and overseas. Each SCT consists of a group of dedicated volunteers, working together to raise SSAFA’s profile, ensuring those who need support receive it. If you would like to lead and develop a SCT, we’d love to hear from you. Our SCT Chair is the key player, coordinating the activities of the volunteer team to deliver beneficiary support and ensure a safe, effective and financially stability SCT. You will network locally to build relationships with the serving community, other stakeholders and welfare organisations. You will support your SCT volunteers in their roles as well as working with employees in SSAFA’s Serving Community Support Team to ensure the functions of the SCT are run well, documented and reported on annually.
What you will be doing
- Leading the volunteer team, ensuring SSAFA’s values, policies and procedures are followed.
- Being an ambassador for SSAFA, building positive relationships with the chain of command, local SSAFA branches and services, welfare services and other key stakeholders.
- Working closely with your volunteers to establish an annual plan of activities to include fundraising, awareness raising and support.
- Having oversight of all the functions of the SCT, ensuring beneficiaries receive effective support, and volunteers have an opportunity to regularly meet regularly.
- Reporting on the activities the SCT undertakes and their impact, ensuring annual reports are submitted.
- Promoting the work of SSAFA and the SCT, highlighting case studies and good news stories to employees in the SSAFA PR team and Serving Community Support Team.
- Being available to consider any grant applications when received.
- Working closely with employees in the Serving Community Support Team, building on volunteer recruitment and and sharing best practice.
