Job description

Are you excited by new approaches for human rights research? Do open source intelligence and data analysis inspire you? Amnesty International’s Evidence Lab, which sits within our Crisis Response programme, is looking for a Senior Adviser to join our multi-disciplinary team for a one-year parental leave cover.

This is a dynamic role participating in the full breadth of the Evidence Lab’s research and analysis in support of Amnesty’s global human rights efforts – including, but not limited to, the handling of large data sets, the use of open source information, and the analysis of geospatial data.

The successful candidate will come up with and work on some of the most innovative and ground-breaking research in human rights research today. The latest examples of work from the Evidence Lab team include Amnesty Decoders, Smokescreen, our headline-generating investigation into the extreme use of force against protests in Iraq in 2019  and our recent data-analysis of health-worker deaths due to COVID-19.  You would also be working in the team that runs Amnesty’s award-winning Digital Verification Corps.

ABOUT YOU

You will be able to show your track record of using innovative methodologies to deliver successful and impactful research in human rights, journalism or humanitarian work and you love working in a team to find the best solutions to a problem.

You will be experienced using information sources such as large datasets, open source information,  and geo-spatial data, as well as other feasible information sources to conduct research and use the findings to present evidence and tell stories differently and engagingly. You will be able to show how you have integrated these research methodologies into research practices, in particular while bringing other people – especially sceptics - along with you.

You will have experience of leading complex projects from initiation to completion, building coalitions within organisations, managing partnerships outside your organisation, and engaging and managing consultants.

You will be able to work collaboratively with team members from a diverse range of backgrounds and be able to mentor and support colleagues across the Amnesty movement, but you will also be able to work and succeed autonomously. It would be great if you also have experience in working in an international setting – especially outside the ‘global north’.

We’re really looking for a colleague who is team-minded and is a doer. Because we’re a dispersed team, we also hope you are organised, follow through on your commitments and hold yourself – and the rest of your team - accountable. We work hard, but we do so with humour, and we know good human rights work takes time.  As our team works with colleagues across the globe, there is the need for some flexibility in taking early morning or later evening calls – but we commit, as a team, to taking care of each other and ensuring a flexible working environment because ensuring work-life balance and wellbeing are important to us.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
