What will you be doing?

Main Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development and implementation of our strategic objectives, providing insight, oversight, and direction to ensure the organisation's goals are achieved efficiently.

• Governance and Compliance: Ensure that Been There adheres to all legal and statutory requirements. Monitor compliance with governance best practices and ethical standards.

• Financial Oversight: Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation, ensuring its viability and that all financial resources are managed responsibly and in line with organisational objectives.

• Risk Management: Identify, monitor, and mitigate risks to the organisation, ensuring robust risk management strategies are in place.

• Advocacy and Ambassadorship: Act as an ambassador for Been There, advocating for our mission and values, and enhancing our visibility and reputation.

• Fundraising Support: Play an active role in guiding and supporting the charity's fundraising efforts, ensuring financial goals are met and resources are secured for future sustainability.

What are we looking for?

Person Specification

 Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with any body image issues and related mental health concerns. Experience, skills and expertise in charity law, an interest in the well-being of people combined with an in-depth understanding of our work and ambitions are particularly sought.

Knowledge, skills and understanding:

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of governance experience within a board, ideally in the non-profit sector or a related field.
• Skills: Strong strategic thinking, leadership, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge: A good understanding of the legal and financial responsibilities of a trustee and experience in risk management, strategic planning, and organisational oversight.
• Commitment: Ability to commit time for board meetings, committee involvement, and preparation work. Expected to attend quarterly board meetings and contribute to special projects as needed.

NB: Ideally you would need to attend quarterly trustee meetings in the Kingston Upon Thames area, but you are able to attend this remotely if required.

Being a Trustee for the CGD Society means you will use your skills and experience to support our charity, ensure we are achieving our aims and we are working towards our goals and mission. All Trustees are jointly responsible for any decisions made as well as defining and overseeing our strategy.

You will work closely with our dedicated staff to ensure the organisation operates effectively, efficiently and economically, with a culture that is positive, and focused on the needs of those it serves. 

As well as attending Board meetings, Trustees are encouraged to join a subcommittee and use their skills to assist our staff and maximise effort in a specific area. Our current subcommittees cover Governance, Finance, Fundraising, Community and Medical.

• Lived experience with CGD. 

• Legal expertise, preferably within a charitable context, to provide essential guidance. 

• Fundraising proficiency, including successful grant application and grant writing abilities, to enhance income diversification. 

• Proficiency in Information Technology, digital platforms, and digital marketing 

• Representation from the healthcare sector to enrich our understanding of healthcare delivery in the UK. 

• Brand development skills to maximize the utilization of our assets. 

Whilst these skills are desirable, we would like to hear from anyone who is interested in this role. A successful Trustee will be able to draw on a diverse range of technical and soft skills as well as their knowledge and passion.

Introduction to the Governance, Secretariat & Performance Reporting Lead Role

As the lead of the Governance, Secretariat & Performance Reporting team, you'll be like the conductor of an orchestra, making sure every part of our charity hits the right notes at the right time. Key Responsibilities:

1. Governance and Compliance Oversight: Ensure that all activities within Barawak adhere to the highest standards of governance and compliance, as set by our trustees and in accordance with relevant regulations and laws. Develop and maintain a comprehensive set of policies and procedures that are the foundation of our operational excellence.

2. Secretariat Functions: Act as the primary point of contact for trustees and advisors, managing communications, preparing meeting agendas, and ensuring the accurate recording of actions and decisions. Your meticulous attention to detail and planning will ensure the smooth running of board meetings and the timely dissemination of information.

3. Performance Reporting: Lead the development and implementation of a robust performance reporting framework. You will work closely on behalf of the trustees, with the advisors, programme and vertical leads to establish and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), providing insights and reports that drive strategic decisions and demonstrate our impact to stakeholders and the community we serve.

4. Cross-functional Coordination: Facilitate and report on the monthly programme reviews with the Board of Trustees, quarterly advisory meetings, and annual general meetings. Role Summary

Roots Academy is in the process of registering as a charity. As part of this process, the team are working towards creating policies, procedures and frameworks to ensure Roots is meeting charity governance requirements, and to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

The teams currently include:

• Executive team – will become the Trustee Board, once registered
• Leadership team – Team Leads include Finance, HR, Marketing, Fundraising, Academic, Delivery

As our Governance Lead, you will work closely with the Executive Team / Trustee Board, to establish a governance framework for the charity. You will also work closely with the relevant team leads to ensure each team has policies and procedures in place.

Key tasks

• Working closely with the Exec team, support the Trustee on-boarding process, to ensure all required documentation is obtained, and stored securely
• Support with trustee meetings, ensuring accurate record keeping of meeting agendas and minutes
• Manage registers; register of members of the board, register of interests, register of gifts, policy register, risk register, submitting to relevant regulators and responding to appropriate requests.
• Oversee the development of governance polices, such as Complaints Policy, Conflict of Interest Policy, Risk Management Policy, and Whistleblowing Policy.
• Work with the leadership team to ensure policies and procedures are in place, in line with best practice, and signed off by the Trustee board. This includes but is not limited to:

• Work with the People Team Lead to roll out HR and safeguarding policies and procedures
• Work with the relevant Team Lead to ensure Roots has all relevant insurances is in place – e.g. public liability insurance for fundraising events, travel insurance for trips abroad, employer liability insurance if employees are recruited in the future.
• Advise the board as necessary, keeping up to date with relevant laws and regulations, including but not limited to Charity Commission Regulations and the Fundraising Code of Conduct.

Red Balloon is a dynamic education charity with a number of Learner Centres throughout the UK that support young people who self-exclude from school and are missing education because of bullying or other trauma. They provide both an academic and therapeutic programme to enable their students to get back on track and reconnect with society. • Downright Excellent (DEx) is a small charity committed to enabling children with Down syndrome to maximise their potential. We deliver a range of specialist interventions and support to children with Down syndrome and their families.

The Royal Society for Asian Affairs (RSAA) is seeking to recruit three new trustees to support it at an important point in its development, approaching its 125th anniversary in 2026.

At Mid Norfolk Mencap we are passionate about supporting people with learning disabilities and their families. Enabling people to live independently, person-centred care is at the heart of what we do.

Our mission is to support and enable the people who use our services to lead fulfilling lives, to be involved in their local wider community, and to have access to the same opportunities as all members of society.

Mid Norfolk Mencap was established since 1977, and every year we provide residential living, social opportunities, and specialised Community Outreach support for more than 100 people with a learning disability in Norfolk. However, with around 16,500 adults in Norfolk with a learning disability, we know we can do so much more.

This is an exciting time for us as we work to grow and strengthen our services. As a trustee you will play a vital role in helping us deliver a stronger and more sustainable organisation for the benefit of our service users, their families, and for the staff who work to deliver those services.

Position: Trustee

Location: Trustee Board meetings and many of our charity’s activities take place in Dereham. In addition, some work may be required remotely using Zoom/ Teams, or in other parts of Norfolk from time to time.

Salary: This position is unpaid but reasonable expenses may be paid.

Responsibilities

This role is suited to candidates who can demonstrate professional or skills-based knowledge of benefit to the charity. We would particularly welcome applications from people with experience in the third sector, PR, fundraising, governance, risk management, management and law, and accountancy.

You will be given a basic induction to the charity and opportunities to meet with the senior management team. We will customise a training and familiarisation package for the successful candidate based on prior knowledge and experience.

All Trustees are expected to make an active and dynamic contribution to the Board, the organisation and to supporting our work. Trustees have wide-ranging skills, knowledge, and experience appropriate to governance and strategy.

The overall role of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the Charity’s affairs, our strategic planning and to provide guidance to help ensure financial viability and support the requirements underpinning proper financial governance and procedures.

This key role will provide assurance to the Board that the financial resources of YMCA Humber meet its present and future needs, working with the CEO to ensure the Charity complies with relevant legislations, through efficient administration and best practice in good governance.

The ideal candidate will possess: 

• Strategic vision, and a solid understanding and acceptance of the legal responsibilities of Trusteeship.
• Financial or accountancy experience. 
• Good independent judgment, and a high level of credibility within the community.
• Strong leadership skills and a commitment to the work of the Charity.
• Open and transparent approach.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
• Knowledge of Charity finance or housing association finance.
• Skills to analyse proposals and examine the financial consequences.

It should be noted that the focus of this Trustee role is strategic, and the Treasurer will not be managing the organisation’s finances on a day-to-day basis; however, regular contact and liaison with the Chief Executive Officer and Head of Finance is expected.

About the board and Trustee role 

Trustees are volunteers who oversee the strategic direction of the charity and ensure its compliance with regulators and the law. They are also ambassadors for the charity; and they provide the staff team, which does the day-to-day work, with both scrutiny and support. 

The full board meets quarterly. Two meetings focus on ‘business’ – approving budgets and policies, making key decisions, etc. The other two are more discursive, covering strategic issues. 

We have four sub-committees: Finance Audit Investment & Risk, Impact & Income Development, Research & Policy, and Governance & People. Trustees are generally invited to sit on at least one sub-committee, which gives them more detailed insight into the charity’s work in that area. A number of trustees choose to sit on multiple sub-committees (there is no upper limit) and trustees are also welcome to attend any sub-committee, for example as a one-off, to see what happens or if they have an interest in a particular agenda item. Sub-committees also meet quarterly. 

And there is usually one strategy day a year. 

We currently have ten trustees on our board, with skills and experience in charity leadership and governance, addictions psychiatry, academic research, public affairs, policing, and marketing. We are looking to a recruit a further two trustees.

Trustees’ Role Description and Person Specification 

Being a Trustee of Alcohol Change UK 

Our Board of Trustees has overall responsibility for the UK’s leading charity in the field of alcohol harm. We are a registered charity (No. 1140287) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 07462605). Our trustees are also members of the charity and directors of the company. Governance is in accordance with both charity and company law. This role description uses the term ‘trustee’ to refer to all three roles (trustee, member, director). 

As well as overseeing proper governance, the Board is responsible for strategic decision-making, upholding the reputation of the charity and ensuring that it delivers on its charitable object to reduce alcohol harm. As a trustee you will share this collective responsibility and bring your personal skills, experience and connections to bear.

This is an exciting time for the charity as we are in the first year of our newly approved five-year strategy from Apr 2024 to Mar 2029. Our new trustees will play a key role in helping us deliver on this strategy. 

The Duties and Responsibilities of Trustees 

Governing Documents 

Our primary governing document is the Memorandum and Articles of Association which sets out the formal duties and responsibilities of the trustees, directors and members. It is complemented by our Scheme of Delegation. We have also adopted the Code of Good Governance, and remain compliant with the rules of the Charity Commissioners and Companies House. 

General Duties and Responsibilities 

The following are general duties, based on documentation from the Charity Commission and Companies House: 

1. To act in the interests of the charity’s objects – that is, its cause and its beneficiaries. 
2. To act reasonably and prudently in all matters. 
3. To avoid personal views and prejudices affecting your decision-making. 
4. To protect – and actively promote – the property, interests and reputation of the charity. 
5. To set the strategic direction, provide strategic oversight, and make critical decisions. 
6. To always make decisions collectively as a board and in particular to actively support all board decisions (that are made in accordance with the charity’s constitution) regardless of your personal position on such decisions. 
7. To understand how the charity works, including being fully aware of the charity’s general risks and its financial position. 
8. To ensure compliance with all statutory requirements as set out by Companies House and the Charity Commission and by other relevant statutory bodies and legislation. 
9. To challenge and support the CEO and, through them, the broader staff team. 

Additional Duties and Responsibilities 

The following additional duties and responsibilities have been adopted by Alcohol Change UK: 

1. To abide by Alcohol Change UK’s policies, such as those on equal opportunities, health and safety, safeguarding, code of conduct, conflicts of interest, GDPR, etc. 
2. To endeavour to achieve at least 75% attendance at Board meetings. In accordance with the governing documents, trustees missing three consecutive board meetings without reasonable cause will normally be asked to step down. 
3. To undertake training as required and to participate in an annual development appraisal. 
4. To join at least one of the charity’s four sub-committees. 
5. To represent Alcohol Change UK at events and to act as a positive ambassador for Alcohol Change UK amongst its key audiences. 
6. To understand and respect the boundary between governance and the operational matters that are delegated to the staff team. 
7. To respond to Alcohol Change UK correspondence in a timely manner. 

Extra Duties of the Treasurer 

1. Chairing the Finance Audit Investment and Risk sub-committee. 
2. Advising the CEO and board on financial strategy and risk. 
3. Supporting the CEO and finance staff on financial matters, for example by advising the staff team on the production of budgets, management accounts and other financial information to ensure they are as useful to the board as possible. 
4. Providing substantive input to the Trustees’ Annual Report & Accounts. 
5. Having a direct line of communication with the auditors.

Finance & Accounting: You will have Financial Management/Accounting experience, helping us to maintain an overview of the organisation’s affairs ensuring its financial viability and that proper financial management/records and procedures are maintained.  You will have the skills and expertise to analyse proposals or plans pertaining to the development, growth, or diversification of the organisation and to examine the financial consequences of those proposals/plans.

Clinical: If you have experience as a doctor, nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist or any other clinical role we would love to hear from you.

Tushinde Children’s Trust, founded in 2010, believes the best place for children to grow up is in their family units. We work in the informal settlements of Mathare and Kiambiu of Nairobi, Kenya. Our targeted programmes and dedicated social workers provide tailored family care and access to education for the poorest families. We help families strengthen and stay together. Tushinde is a child-focused organisation and committed to child protection and the protection of vulnerable adults. All shortlisted candidates will be screened prior to joining the board and have background checks that may go beyond contacting referees. Every candidate, regardless of post applied for, will be expected to adhere to the principles of child protection and ensure that those around them do the same.

Tushinde is a UK registered charity, with a board of six trustees. Its programme is delivered through a Kenyan registered NGO of the same name, which has its own independent board of trustees. We are looking for up to three new trustees to join our UK board, to compliment and broaden the skills and knowledge of our existing trustees. 

The Board of trustees meets four times a year and is responsible for ensuring:

• We comply with our governing document and the law

• Act in the charity’s best interest

• Manage the charity’s resources responsibly

• Act with reasonable skill and care

• Ensure we are accountable to our stakeholders

• Oversight of the Kenyan operations, particularly safeguarding

• Fundraising to support our ongoing programme

• UK charity governance

Beyond the regular board meetings there are plenty of opportunities to support the organisation both in the UK and Kenya. All UK meetings are remote and are typically scheduled at 18:00 UK time.

We are looking for a flexible, committed and reliable individual who has an interest in child welfare in Africa. In addition, we would be particularly interested to hear from individuals with any of the following skills or experience:

• Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams

• Child welfare, particularly in low or middle income countries

• Risk and charity governance

• And finally, if you have experience of or a connection to Kenya or East Africa even better!
