Head of Development – Museums and Gardens

We are looking for a talented fundraiser, with a background in the cultural sector to join the Gardens, Libraries & Museums (GLAM) Team within the Development and Alumni Engagement team of the University of Oxford.

You will be working with such iconic institutions as the Pitt Rivers Museum, the Oxford Botanic Gardens, the History of Science Museum and the Oxford University Museum of Natural History.  In this role in any given week you might see a dodo, extraordinary thousand-year old Chinese ceramics, insects collected by Darwin, the first scientifically described dinosaur and drawings by John Ruskin, as well as work on projects involving saving the largest flower in the world or supporting world-leading restitution work.

The collections are important and renowned on their own accounts, but also play a key role in the University’s research.  In addition, they are the open doors to the University of Oxford, encouraging a diverse range of communities to engage our academics and curators.

Your role will include fundraising for major gifts to support the museums and gardens, and leading a team of fundraisers who will work to support a wide range of activities across the institutions.  You will also work closely with the Directors and other curators to raise funds from a range of donors and supporters. You will work with the Associate Director of Development – GLAM to develop strategies and manage relationships with the Directors and be part of the wider fundraising team for GLAM.

This is a hugely exciting opportunity to join Gloucester Cathedral as it enters a key period of development. Key responsibilities

1. Manage WheelPower’s social media output

• Plan, create, write and schedule social media posts. Analyse activity and respond to comments and tagged posts

• Spot trends and advise on best social media content and new technologies

• Create new webpages to support the promotion of new opportunities and activities and ensure that all pages are optimised for search engine and ensure we learn from Google Analytics and visitor behaviour

3. Marketing and communications

• Produce innovative content for the delivery of creative, successful and cost-effective marketing and media campaigns targeting online and off-line audiences.
• Target specific communications which promote our work to wheelchair users, those who support wheelchair users, disabled groups, disabled children, their families and our supporters.
• Manage and produce regular outbound communications which promote WheelPower and our partners’ events and activities.
• Maintain and develop good relationships with local and national media organisations.
• Produce high quality press releases for written media, arrange interviews with radio, and be the point of contact to organise and arrange TV media to attend our events.
• Create, monitor and evaluate paid for social media advertising and online digital marketing opportunities. Work with a given budget to produce effective and engaging Ads.

4. Content Creation

• Promote our events and activities by telling the stories of how our work has had a positive impact on the physical and mental well-being of disabled people
• Produce a range of well written and informative stories which will underpin our promotional activity. Arrange interviews and be confident with audio/visual equipment to capture positive feedback from our beneficiaries.

Our Retail team is an integral part of our Charity, and as Head of Retail, you will be responsible for our estate of 27 shops that cover East of England, west towards Oxfordshire and south towards London.  We would ask that you are flexible so as to travel around the region and have a regular presence in our Godmanchester Head Office. 

As Head of Retail, you will be responsible for the strategic and operational direction, which includes:

Driving Growth: Achieve sales and profit targets through managing our Retail Area Managers whilst strengthening the existing estate by building strong foundations.

Strategic: Developing a customer focused strategy, ensuring it maximises sustainable net income and long-term value for the charity.

Team Building & Management: Working alongside the People and Volunteering teams, empower, support and develop a high performing retail team and create a collaborative workplace culture.

Budgetary and Financial Management: Work with the retail managers to set target net contributions for retail activities and making any amendments where necessary.

Operational: Ensure that all processes and systems are fit for purpose and constantly review the operational framework to ensure that the highest standards are being met.

Our Business Development department is integral to the success of our organisation and we are looking for an experienced, organised and driven individual to fulfil the role of Head of Business Development. 

We are looking for someone who is comfortable in leading and co-ordinating a team. You will lead and operationally manage the department in our external business development engagement activities as well as our internal, cross-departmental collaboration working towards our ‘Evolve Strategy’.

You will have a clear and demonstrable understanding of configuring, organising and developing business development strategies and an understanding of how an awarding body operates particularly within the education landscape. 

A proactive communication style, strong organisation and interpersonal skills and a decisive nature are key qualities required in this role. You will operate in a flexible and predominantly remote working environment; therefore a demonstrable experience of working using your own initiative alongside a desire to innovate and test new ways of working are essential. 

Your team will be supported by a Business Development Co-ordinator and two Business Development Managers, each focused on retention of business and new business (New Business Development Manager to be recruited). Additionally, a team of Business Development Officers and Centre Engagement Executives also support the team.

Role purpose: 

• Set & deliver the Business Development Strategy alongside the Director of Engagement that supports growth, reach, and impact of Leadership Skills Foundation programmes. 
• Drive operational progress by developing positive and proactive working relationships with other Heads of Department.
• Influence the future direction of the Leadership Skills Foundation as a member of the Leadership Team.

The main resposnsibiltiies will be:

• Effectively manage and develop the Business Development Team and relationship management functions to meet agreed budgets and maximise learner/programme registrations.
