Job Description
Volunteer monitoring work with the IMB gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives. You will listen to prisoners and people in immigration detention, talk to staff and see for yourself what is actually happening behind the walls.
The IMB is recruiting for new members at numerous prisons and at immigration detention centres across England and Wales, and at short term holding facilities across the UK. We are looking for people who live within approximately 30 miles (or one hour) of their closest establishment and can commit the time to make 2 to 3 visits per month, although this may be slightly higher during the first year of training and this can be flexible depending on the needs of the Board and the individual. Please visit the IMB website for a full list of all locations we are recruiting to.
Who are the IMB?
We’re a group of ordinary members of the public, doing an extraordinary job. As a passionate, personable individual, you could join us in making a difference. In this unpaid role, you’ll volunteer your talent and time towards securing a decent day-to-day life for every prisoner and detainee. Under the guidance of dedicated mentors and an extensive training programme, you’ll commit to a flexible schedule of visits to a local establishment each month. Although this is an unpaid role, we pay travel and subsistence expenses, childcare or carer costs and, in certain circumstances, contributions towards loss of earnings. Your observations will have an impact as your Board reports its findings to Ministers in His Majesty’s Government.
About the role
With unrestricted access to these unique environments, you’ll gain a rare insight into all aspects of life in custody. Impartial and highly influential, you can decide what shape your visits should take. As an independent monitor, you may spend time in a specific part of the establishment and choose to have your conversations with prisoners or detainees out of sight or hearing of a member of staff. As well as keeping a close eye on daily operations, you’ll play a crucial role in dealing with problems that arise. This could be in response to a confidential request to see a member of the IMB, or to observe the management of the more serious incidents that occur.
Why join us?
More than anything else, this is a rewarding opportunity that makes a real and meaningful difference to the lives of prisoners, detainees and our wider society. Ministers are obliged to respond to the issues raised in your Board’s report. The environment may seem intimidating at first, but you will be fully supported through your training and accompanied during your visits until you feel ready to manage independently. This highly recognised and respected role could provide the experience that opens doors into other careers within the justice system.
Who are we looking for?
There is no one type of person who could be right for the IMB because it’s not about background or skillset. It’s about having the dedication and passion to ensure all people are being treated fairly. For that reason, we’re looking for individuals from all walks of life who will approach the role with no preconceptions. You will need to be willing to work within a challenging environment and have the confidence to report your findings to senior figures. Most importantly, you will be able to talk to people in a way that makes each prisoner or detainee feel respected and reassured.
Closing date for completed applications is 14 October 2024.
Visit our website for more information and to complete the online application form.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

GreenKPI
We empower employees to drive change through pre-loaded sustainability actions, and custom actions to capture great ideas.
Organisations must incorporate sustainability into operations to reduce negative environmental and social impact. The barriers to change are time, cost and knowledge. It takes time to work out the how to change, and time is money. It costs money to hire consultants or train staff to drive change, who may leave at any time. Lack of knowledge and systems to drive change has held back action on sustainability.
GreenKPI is a B2B SaaS integrating sustainability with company operations by empowering staff to drive change with hundreds of pre-loaded sustainability actions, and custom actions to capture great ideas. Automated Sustainability reports share the story of action and change metrics. Reports can be any combination of actions completed, uploaded metrics and locations. Metrics include environmental metrics from procurement data, plus social and economic indicators. Reports are interactive dashboards with shareable URLs that remain updated with each new action and metric upload. A project management system ensures GreenKPI is actionable, repeatable, measurable and reportable.
Thank you for considering to volunteer with GreenKPI. I appreciate the time you make available for helping startups like GreenKPI to make the world a better place for everyone today, and tomorrow.

Role Description
Your primary responsibility is to work towards increasing the knowledge the Nightline Association Training Team has of the Training methods used by all Nightlines and to utilise this to improve the support the Training Team can offer to Nightlines.
Historically, the Training Team has relied upon the experience and knowledge of its own volunteers to give a picture of how Nightlines across the UK and Ireland undertake their training and recruitment processes, including any similarities and differences in how they operate. The Training Review Branch of the Training Team aims to reduce the reliance on individual volunteers’ knowledge, by collating information from Nightlines and other Nightline Association Teams, in particular the Quality Assurance Team, to create a centralised resource that gives an insight into the training methods of all Nightlines.
As this is a newly created branch of the Training Team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the branch's operation.
You will also be expected to provide feedback on the structure and content of Nightlines’ training, based on your previous experience and any knowledge you gain in this role.
You will sit within the Training Review Branch, within the Training Team. The role of the Training Team is to provide support to Nightlines developing their training practices, and provide options and advice to any member Nightlines. The other Training Team branches are Training Support and Training Development. Your line manager would be the Training Team Lead. The team sits within the Nightline Services Department, headed by the Head of Services.
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Collate information from both Nightlines and the Nightline Association with regards to training methods across all Nightline services
-
Produce clear, easily navigable resources that outline the training methods used by all Nightline services
-
Communicate effectively with Nightlines and explain the purpose and benefits of the Training Methods Branch’s work
-
Review and provide feedback on the structure and content of a member Nightline’s training, at the request of the Nightline
-
Work collaboratively with other Training Team branches and Teams within the Nightline Association
-
Work with the Quality Assurance Team to review the Training section of the Good Practice Guidelines
-
Gather feedback from Nightlines regarding the quality of support they have received and any services they would like the Branch or Team to offer in the future
Essential Experience and Skills
-
Previous experience facilitating training within Nightlines or a similar organisation
-
Highly developed organisational skills
-
Ability to work as part of a team and independently
-
Excellent written and oral communication skills
-
Ability to produce clear, easily navigable information resources
Desirable Experience
-
Previous experience within a Nightline and/or the Nightline Association
-
Previous experience facilitating and organising training within Nightlines or a similar organisation
-
Previous experience collecting information and/or data on a large scale and putting it into a digestible format
-
IT proficiency and previous experience working collaboratively in a Google Drive environment
