We are seeking a Director of Finance to lead financial strategy to ensure long-term resilience, manage the finance team, deliver a high standard of financial governance, and provide effective support for our parishes. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will provide expert financial guidance to the Bishop, Trustees, and diocesan leaders. You will oversee financial governance, treasury and investment management, risk assessment, and IT strategy, ensuring financial prudence while supporting the mission of the Church.

We are looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with experience in complex organisations and, ideally, knowledge of the charity or not for profit sector. The successful candidate will have well-developed interpersonal skills, a track record of excellent attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex financial matters to non-finance audiences. A commitment to teamwork and supporting parishes is essential.

An understanding of Catholic Church teachings and values is crucial, as you will play a key role in aligning financial decisions with pastoral priorities.

This role will be working 37.5 hours per week, offering a competitive salary of £85,000 - £95,000 per annum.

Based at St. Edmund House, Bishop Crispian Way, Portsmouth, PO1 3QA, with regular travel across the Diocese to parishes and diocesan meetings, including the Channel Islands which may require overnight stays. Please note, for this role a full driving license and access to a vehicle will be required.

Role Purpose

The Director of Finance is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, responsible for strategic financial leadership and ensuring the financial sustainability of the Diocese. This role encompasses treasury management, investment strategy, risk management, IT oversight, and long-term financial planning. It also involves leading and developing a resilient and professional finance team.

The Director of Finance must balance financial prudence with pastoral priorities, fostering trust with clergy, lay leaders, and stakeholders while driving financial and operational efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Develop and implement a financial strategy aligned with the Diocese’s mission and long-term objectives.
• Provide financial analysis, forecasting, and risk management to support strategic decision-making.
• Ensure compliance with Canon Law, UK financial regulations, and charity law across all jurisdictions.
• Advise the Bishop, COO, Trustees, and key leaders on all aspects of financial management.
• Attend senior board and committee meetings presenting clear and insightful financial reports.

Treasury & Investment Management

• Oversee treasury operations, ensuring effective cash flow management and financial sustainability.
• Lead on investment strategy, working with the Investment Committee and external advisors to maximise ethical and responsible investment returns.
• Regularly review Restricted and Designated Funds to ensure compliance with Diocesan policies and procedures for such funds.

Leadership of the Finance Team

• Provide strong leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Develop and mentor finance staff, ensuring they have the skills and support needed to succeed.
• Ensure the efficient operation of financial systems, budgeting, reporting, and internal controls.
• Promote collaboration across diocesan departments, ensuring effective financial stewardship at all levels.

Financial Oversight, Risk Management & Investigations

• Oversee fraud risk management, implementing robust controls to identify, prevent, and address financial irregularities, particularly in parish accounts.
• Develop and maintain a Financial Risk Register, identifying and mitigating key risks across the Diocese, including fraud, liquidity, compliance, and operational risks.
• Regularly review and update the Risk Register, ensuring risks are assessed, mitigated, and reported to senior leadership and trustees.
• Establish and implement risk management strategies, embedding a culture of financial accountability across the Diocese.
• Provide audit support and financial guidance to parishes, ensuring adherence to best practices and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the development of annual budgets, ensuring alignment with diocesan strategy and long-term financial sustainability.
• Develop and maintain long-term financial forecasts, assessing future income, expenditure, and funding requirements.
• Lead and manage complex financial investigations, ensuring transparency, accuracy, and compliance.

Financial Planning & Parish Support

• Provide strategic financial support to parishes, schools, and diocesan agencies, helping them develop long-term sustainability plans.
• Offer guidance on budgeting, financial controls, and fundraising strategies.
• Develop and implement financial training for clergy and parish finance teams to improve financial literacy and compliance.
• Operational & IT Leadership
• Lead the IT strategy, ensuring digital transformation aligns with financial and operational objectives.
• Work with IT providers to ensure cybersecurity, data protection, and technology governance.
• Embed and oversee financial systems and processes, driving efficiency through modern financial software and automation.

Payroll

• Lead the payroll function working closely with the HR manager to deliver a reliable and accurate service for employees. This will include the effective use of the designated payroll IT system.

Governance, Reporting & Compliance

• Ensure full compliance with accounting standards, charity law, and internal policies across all jurisdictions.
• Delivery of the Financial Annual Report and Accounts to agreed timescales.
• Develop and update key policies and procedures to ensure financial governance and accountability.
• Work closely with Trustees, external auditors, and regulatory bodies to maintain transparency and good governance.
• Implement robust internal financial controls to safeguard diocesan assets and mitigate risks.
• Develop a standard suite of financial reports to enable informed strategic and operational decision-making for the Board of Trustees and senior leaders.
• Timely production of monthly management accounts and cashflow analysis

Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

• Act as a trusted advisor to the Bishop, clergy, Trustees, and Senior Leadership Team.
• Communicate complex financial information clearly and persuasively to both finance professionals and non-experts.
• Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring financial decisions support the Diocese’s mission.

Competence, Expertise and Knowledge:

• Degree-level education (or equivalent professional qualification/experience).

As the London Sexual Health Services Manager, you will lead METRO’s London-based Sexual & Reproductive Health services, overseeing a range of programmes including sexual health, outreach, and youth engagement.

What the job involves

We’re looking for a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer to join our Black Health Equity and Engagement team. The team plays a key role in supporting our community engagement work by building trust and strengthening relationships with Black community organisations and leaders across the UK. The aim is to raise awareness of prostate cancer risk within Black communities and help reduce the health inequalities experienced by Black men.

As a Black Health Equity Engagement Officer, you’ll be providing the logistical support to Prostate Cancer UK’s Black Men’s Advisory Group - who provide insights, support and guidance to the charity to help us address Black health equity. You’ll attend a wide range of community events and identify ways to spread awareness and build trusting relationships with groups, organisations and networks.

By building an understanding of the ways which health inequalities impact Black men affected by prostate cancer (and their families) you’ll establish effective and efficient working practices and gather data capturing the impact of this work.

You’ll get to meet a wide range of supporters and work with Black communities to ensure their lived experiences shape our work and help to increase our number of Black volunteers to increase awareness. You’ll also get to work with different teams across the charity and act as a source of knowledge for our work in tackling health inequalities. 

What we want from you

We’re looking for candidates who understand health inequalities and is able to explain how they may impact Black men affected by prostate cancer. Knowledge of, or previous involvement in health awareness initiatives would be beneficial for this role, although we also value transferable skills gained from other sectors.

You’ll have experience in organising meetings or events that cater to a diverse range of participants, ensuring that various perspectives are heard and valued, especially within Black communities. 

You’ll have a proven ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with a wide array of stakeholders. Furthermore, you’ll be a great communicator, especially when engaging with community stakeholders.

Please note that community events often take place on evenings or weekends – the successful candidate will need to work flexibly to attend roughly one weekend event a month and take time back mid-week. Community awareness events will take place in the Midlands and London.

• Ensure every Emergency Department and Critical Care unit has a suitable bereavement suite
• Ensure that bereavement boxes are available at each of these hospitals
• Ensure that immediate bereavement support is available for all affected by the sudden death of a child or young person
• Provide a professional counselling service and other therapies for those affected by the sudden death of a child or young person
• Provide support to individuals who witness the sudden death of a child or young person

2wish Cymru and 2wish:

2wish has been established since 2012 and has since grown from strength to strength. During this time, we have worked tirelessly to embed our service and ensure that the offer of support is made at the point of death.

We offer an immediate, consistent, high-quality and compassionate service to all individuals affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a child or young person aged 25 and under. We work in partnership with professionals who refer into the charity on behalf of families, so they don’t have to trawl through the internet for an organisation who may, or may not, be able to support. We provide immediate, and ongoing, support and are here for as long as our families need us.

We were founded as a Welsh organisation providing immediate casework support, as well as ongoing aftercare services including counselling, alternative therapies, play therapy, support groups, support events and a respite cottage. In January 2024, we expanded into ‘phase one’ England, namely Cheshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. And in July 2025 we will expand into ‘phase two’ England, namely Merseyside, Devon and Cornwall, Wiltshire, Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Context of role:

The Therapies Assessor and Service Manager will lead the development, coordination, and delivery of our support service for families, professionals and individuals affected by sudden bereavement. Working closely with the Immediate Support and Debrief Manager who is responsible for leading the immediate support and debrief service, you will be responsible for ensuring that our ongoing services are trauma-informed, consistent and delivered to a high standard supporting the complex and individual needs of those who have experienced profound loss.

This role will oversee the existing ongoing support service delivered across Wales and the expansion phases across England and will contine to grow the team as the charity expands. Services include counselling, complementary therapy, play therapy, support events, coffee mornings, wellbeing walks, online events and our beautiful respite house, Ty Uchaf. You will manage a team of nine individuals who are a mixture of full and part time roles. This is a unique and hugely rewarding opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of suddenly bereaved individuals across our communities.

You will work closely with the Therapies Assessor and Service Manager and Children and Young People Service Manager to provide a holistic, joined up service to all who access our service.

Main duties:

• To manage the bereavement service including the operational delivery of our therapeutic service and ongoing support, ensuring the service is delivered consistently, responsively and to a high standard
• Monitor and maintain high-quality therapeutic support in line with ethical frameworks (e.g., BACP/UKCP/BAPT).
• Ensure client records, risk assessments, and service monitoring forms are accurate and stored securely.
• Manage referrals, assessments, allocation of clients, and waiting lists efficiently.
• To develop and oversee ongoing support services including coffee mornings, support events, our respite house and online support events, in line with budget and service delivery expectation
• To work closely with the Head of Bereavement Services to ensure delivery and growth of services
• To oversee the awareness raising efforts with our secondary referral partners across Wales and the two phases of England
• To oversee the service and monitoring tools and ensure we are actively gathering feedback and monitoring appropriately

Management:

•  To lead, motivate and line manage the ongoing support team responsible for delivering our ongoing support service
• Manage a growing team, organise regular team meetings and set realistic but challenging objectives to further the work of the charity
• To carry our monthly supervisions and bi-annual appraisals with the Counselling and Support Outreach Coordinators and Support Coordinator
• To carry out bi-monthly case reviews with the Immediate Support team
• To produce weekly, monthly and quarterly reports to evidence activity and impact
• To develop and oversee a training programme for the team including mandatory and varied subject matter

General:

• To be responsible for organising own work agenda, time management and administration
• To show respect and sensitivity for the cultural and religious beliefs of families
• To undertake learning opportunities and seek them out for the team

It is the nature of the work that tasks and responsibilities are in may circumstances unpredictable and varied. All employees are therefore expected to work in a flexible way and tasks, which are not specifically covered in their job description may have to be undertaken.

Salary: Starting salary of £32,000 per annum, with the opportunity for an increase through the annual appraisal structure.

Contract type: Permanent

Hours: Normal office hours are 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, although alternative hours may be worked with line manager agreement. Work outside office hours may sometimes be necessary and will be compensated for by time off in lieu. 

Annual leave: 28 days plus bank holidays. Annual leave steadily increases after five years of service. Annual leave and statutory holidays are calculated on a pro rata basis where applicable.

Pension: 2wish operate a contributory pension scheme. 2wish will auto-enrol you into the scheme in accordance with it's auto-enrolment obligations. Full details of the scheme will be provided to you once you are enrolled, including the minimum level of contributions that you will be required to make during your membership (current contributions - employer 3% and employee 5%). 

Mileage: A fixed rate allowance is payable for agreed mileage undertaken on 2wish business in a private vehicle, over and above your usual journey to your workplace/s.

Location: Dependent on location, flexible - Some home working with regular travel to areas of service delivery, and regular travel to 2wish Head Office in South Wales.

Main duties

• Lead relationships with a portfolio of trusts, foundations, and other grant-making bodies to establish a robust pipeline of sustainable income.

Role Description

Working with other staff and volunteers, you will oversee the visitor experience to ensure a consistently high standard, delivering a wide-ranging programme of activities that will also attract a new and diverse audience to the Cathedral whilst maximising visitor donations and income.

Key Responsibilities

• Commitment to the Cathedral’s values and inclusive culture and to demonstrate them through professional behaviour working with clergy, staff and volunteers
• Management and oversight of visitor experience ensuring all visitors have a positive experience, whether they come to the Cathedral as a sightseer, pilgrim, worshipper, or event attendee

Probationary and notice period

In accordance with current Chapter Policy, the post is subject to a 12 week probationary period. After completion of the probationary period the notice period is one month.
