Health medical volunteer roles

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education. 

We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by sharing your first aid skills and knowledge. As a Community First Aider, you’ll deliver first aid to those in need through local events, as well as provide education to the public so that the ripple effect of First Aid grows.

Through supporting the growth of community partnerships, you will bring people along to our cause, growing our membership and fundraising base and spreading the message that First Aid Saves Lives. 

Through volunteering as a Community First Aider, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride delivering an essential service. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time. 

We will make sure you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on. Want to learn first aid? Enjoy going to local events? Want to meet people and make new friends? This is the role for you. St John provide first aid treatment and care for members of the public at a variety of events. We support our local communities in all sorts of ways including first aid cover, CPR training, community response, and providing first aid training to schools and community groups. This is a fantastic role offering all sorts of opportunities within Cumbria and beyond. We are currently recruiting for Community First Aiders in both Whitehaven and Keswick and would love for you to join us! Full training and support will be provided including: Welcome programme introducing you to the project & wider charity Training in appropriate SJA policies St John Safeguarding training relevant to your role A two day Community First Aider training course The opportunity to be part of a local unit, where you will have ongoing support from peers and further learning & development opportunities Expected Time Commitment ideally two events per month (average event shift 1-8 hours) but this varies. For our Community First Aiders, we ask for a commitment of 60-80 hours a year. This can include time on events, delivering engagement in the community and attending training on Monday evenings. Inductions will be held at our Whitehaven unit where you will also have the opportunity to meet the rest of the team.

All volunteers will initially be trained as Community First Aiders. This role is focused on community engagement, with some practical skills in delivery of first aid. Once inducted and comfortable in this role, there will be further opportunities to develop in role and increase medical skillsets should volunteers wish to pursue this and are able to take on additional commitments.

We are seeking Event Physiotherapists to respond to and manage emergency calls/incidents whilst attending events. At all times provide specialist, clinical, social and holistic care to undertake clinical assessment and interventions those individuals in the pre-hospital environment, which may include stadia, concerts, motorsports, road races etc. This may encompass working on both ambulances / FRV’s and within treatment units as required.

Successful candidates will be registered Physiotherapists with the HCPC.

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated individual to take on the role of Network Volunteering Services Lead who can work and lead volunteering groups and leaders in their own way, supported by our central teams

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to embed ourselves within our communities, delivering support which is tailored to the needs of those communities whilst providing a positive experience for our Volunteers.

We need leaders who are passionate about making a difference in their communities, who care about helping and developing others, who will lead and inspire a volunteer movement across a geographical area to deliver Community First Aid, Community Education and Community Fundraising as well as develop our offering for young people. Through leading a team of Volunteer leaders, you will drive excellence in delivery, develop an inclusive and diverse volunteering experience for new and current volunteers, and help navigate through change to build a bigger and better St John Ambulance.

Volunteers would be expected to attend training for the role both online and in person, and to attend regular network weekly meetings to enable them to keep their skills up to date.

From fireworks on the Hoe to rugby at Plymouth Albion, you could be one of a team keeping our city safe. Our Community First Aiders support everything from major council events like the British Fireworks Championships, to festive Christmas markets, local 10k runs, and community fetes across Plymouth. With full training provided, you'll gain lifesaving skills, join a supportive team, and make a difference at unforgettable events.

Requirements for the role are: Committing 80 hours per year to the role (approximately one day per month). Physical requirements for the role at events requires moving around and treating people. This would include kneeling by a collapsed patient and delivering chest compressions for at least 2 minutes without stopping). To be able to keep up-to-date with online training.

Interviews and Enrolments will be held as a roll on basis as the applications for roles are received.

Training for the role will be given through a Community First Aider course, which will include training in patient assessment and basic life support, managing trauma in emergency settings, and recognising signs and symptoms in both adults and children. You will also determine when to escalate care, seek senior assistance, and handle medications, interventions, and patient communications whilst ensure safety in your role. Essential training such as safeguarding, health and safety, and GDPR will also be given.

As Football Session Helper Volunteer you will help the facilitator/s with pre-session tasks and delivery of exciting football sessions while adhering to the FA code of conduct.  We are currently seeking applications to support our newly launched  football sessions and potentially coach/manage our Football Club’s (West London NHS Peer FC) team if an FA qualified coach or willing to get the qualification.
