Established in December 2013, Betknowmore UK’s mission is to address gambling related harm in UK communities. We are the leading provider of gambling support and training services. The Trustee Role
As a registered charity, our governance and overall leadership rests with our Board of Trustees, who work alongside the Chief Executive and Director team. While membership of the Board is voluntary, and without remuneration (reasonable expenses are paid) it is a highly rewarding experience where Trustees contribute actively, and take significant responsibility for the governance and strategic direction of our organisation. Those already in this role find it extremely fulfilling and are a vital part of the Marwell family. With exciting times ahead, we are looking to complement our existing Board of Trustees with a suitably experienced and highly qualified Fundraising professional. In addition to the generic responsibilities and skills required of Board members, Marwell requires someone who can demonstrate extensive charitable fundraising expertise, at a Director or Chief Executive level. Ideally, they will have relevant experience of fundraising governance, major giving and large-scale capital appeals. This role, like many Board appointments, is non-executive but critical in our overall governance, leadership and understanding of best practice.
Main Duties
Role-specific
• To champion fundraising at Board level.
• To work with the Board, CEO, Directors and senior leadership to embed a culture of fundraising throughout the organisation.
• To provide strategic overview and advise the Board on fundraising governance, compliance and regulation, in support of the senior management team.
• To actively harness the energy and contacts of all trustees to support fundraising initiatives, through appropriate use of their networks, sources and their presence at fundraising and other events.
• To support the fundraising team, as appropriate, on fundraising strategy and activities.
• To support the creation of and take a leading role in a new ‘Development Board’
General
• Participate in supporting and regularly reviewing the strategic aims and operational progress of the organisation.
• Ensure, alongside fellow Trustees, that the policies and practices of the organisation are in keeping with its overall aims and objectives.
• Ensure, alongside fellow Trustees, that the organisation functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and strives to achieve best practice.
• Consider the organisation as a whole and its beneficiaries, whether as a member of the Board or any of its sub-committees.
• Reflect the organisation’s vision and principles, strategy and major policies at all times.
• Adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times, particularly when exercising the functions of the Trustee, or any of its sub-committees or groups.

Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre (ERCC) is a specialist support service for women, non-binary people, members of the trans community and young people aged 12 and over in Edinburgh, East Lothian and Midlothian who have experienced recent or non-recent sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse and commercial sexual exploitation.
Their charitable objectives are to reduce the distress and suffering of people affected by sexual violence through the provisions of support and information, and to increase awareness of sexual violence and its impacts within the wider community. To deliver these projects, ERCC provide a range of trauma-informed services for survivors of sexual violence, including short-term and longer-term therapeutic support, advocacy, outreach, and group support.
ERCC additionally deliver training for a range of stakeholders, and work in schools and with young people across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and strategically with multi-agency partners, towards preventing sexual violence. The organisation currently comprises 40 staff and volunteers, and 10 trustees.
The Role of Trustee:
As a Trustee for the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, you will be commitment to their values, ethos, and charitable objectives. Your key responsibilities include collaborating with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance, overseeing risk management, setting a clear strategic direction, ensuring compliance with legal obligations, and maintaining financial responsibility. This involves reviewing and updating strategic objectives, addressing risks, monitoring finances, ensuring legal compliance, delivering high-quality services to survivors of sexual violence, supporting the staff and volunteer team, promoting ERCC within the community, and participating in the wider Rape Crisis network through shared training events.
ERCC are interested in candidates with experience in Banking/Finance, HR and Legal (Charity/Employment/ Human Rights). We are looking for a commited Trustee to serve as Treasurer and help us shape and evaluate our wonderful small charity - serving Newham's vulnerable and disadvantaged women and by extension, their families.
Responsible to – Chair of Trustees
Who we are looking for:
· Someone who shares our heart for supporting Newham’s vulnerable women and families and is aligned with the foundational values of social justice, inclusion and equality.
· Someone who can contribute professional skills and experience from an area relevant to our work - such as Finance, Education, HR, Immigration, Fundraising, Child Development, Health and Wellbeing, Business or Law
· A level of fluency in written and spoken English to engage with meetings and documents.
· Prior experience of charity governance is not necessary for this role and training will be provided.
Role Summary:
·Work alongside Chair and other board members to oversee the overall governance and strategic direction of Alternatives Trust East London.
·Work alongside other board members to ensure that Alternatives acts in accordance with its governing document, charity law, and other relevant legislation/applicable regulations.
·Act to support the staff and volunteers, to ensure Alternatives adheres to its core values of co-production, compassion, and trauma-informed work.
·Commit to practice collaborative, informed, carefully considered, strategic decision-making.
·Embody our commitment to active anti-racist, trauma-informed, relationship-based working with women and children experiencing multiple disadvantages.
Main responsibilities of the trustee:
·Assist the senior staff team (CEOs, Fundraiser and Finance Manager) in strategic plans and regular review of the long-term strategic aims of the organisation.
·Interrogate organisational policies, goals, targets and help to evaluate performance against these.
·Agree to mentoring, training, and coaching as appropriate to improve your ability to govern and enhance your overall contribution to the board.
In addition:
·Take steps to keep up with the workings and achievements of Alternatives beyond information shared at board meetings through attending events where able, visiting the project, and following project news on social media, on the website, or through newsletters.
Time commitment:
·Average 4 hours per month, although this will vary depending on the schedule of meetings and other events.
Frequency of meetings:
· 1-2 full board meetings per year (held in person where possible, in St Edmund’s Church, Forest Gate E7 8NP).
· 4-5 subcommittee meetings per year (These meetings are held online via zoom)
· Optional celebratory events – often held at the start of Summer Holidays and Mid December.
· Project visits and other meetings relating to your specific contribution within the board, by arrangement.
Length of term – Initial term 3 years, with potential to extend on review.
Renumeration – The role is voluntary however the cost of attending meetings and other duties associated with the role will be reimbursed.
