Job description

Financial Accountant
Salary: £53,000
Permanent, Full-time
Hybrid working – 2 days in office
Location: Central London

A prestigious scientific institution with a global reputation for excellence is seeking a Financial Accountant to join its finance team. This is a unique opportunity for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) to play a pivotal role in supporting the financial operations of an organisation that advances knowledge, research and innovation for the benefit of society.

About the Role
Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Financial Accountant will provide a high-quality financial accounting service across the organisation. The role will focus on ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting, maintaining effective internal controls, and supporting audit, payroll and compliance processes.
You’ll oversee the integrity of financial data, supervise day-to-day ledger activities, and take the lead on balance sheet reconciliations, payroll journals and statutory returns. You’ll also play a key role in producing year-end SORP-compliant accounts, managing VAT and Gift Aid submissions, and supporting the organisation’s external audit.
This position offers exposure to a broad range of finance activities in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment, where precision, integrity and continuous improvement are highly valued.

Key Priorities:

  • Deliver timely and accurate month-end and year-end financial accounts.
  • Lead on balance sheet reconciliations, payroll postings and control accounts.
  • Supervise the sales and purchase ledger processes, ensuring accuracy and adherence to policy.
  • Support audit and statutory reporting requirements, including SORP accounts, VAT and Gift Aid.
  • Review and strengthen financial controls and policies across the organisation.
  • Assist with maintaining asset registers and investment records.
  • Contribute to process and system improvements that enhance efficiency and transparency.

About You
We are seeking a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) or finalist with strong experience in financial accounting and controls, ideally gained in a complex charity, higher education, or research-led environment.

You will bring:

  • A proven track record in preparing financial and statutory accounts, reconciliations and reports.
  • Experience in charity SORP accounting, VAT returns and Gift Aid (desirable).
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • A proactive approach to improving processes, systems and financial governance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build relationships across departments.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines and deliver to a high standard.

This role would suit someone motivated by accuracy, curiosity and continuous improvement — someone who enjoys working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment that values integrity and scientific excellence
