We are recruiting for an experienced Head of Finance for our small and energetic Accounts team. The School of Philosophy and Economic Science is a registered educational charity offering courses to adults, both in person and online.
This position gives you an opportunity to get involved in all aspects of charity finance, from managing a team to reporting to the Trustee board, coordinating budgets and overseeing our annual audit. It's a busy and varied role.
The Head of Finance reports directly to the charity's General Manager and Treasurer.
The purpose of the role is twofold:
- To maintain and improve accounting reporting and controls
- To manage, support, and develop the Senior Accountant and Accounts Assistant

Central to the success of our strategy is an efficient finance function providing timely management information and strong financial controls.
You will be an astute finance professional who is able to provide sound financial advice as well having a strong grip on day-to-day financial operations. You will also ideally have experience of HR, IT, and administrative functions, and will assume company secretary responsibilities, enjoying direct liaison with our Board of Trustees.

The Opportunity

In this role you’ll be both strategic and hands-on, solely managing the financial controls for this small charity with a £350k annual turnover. You will support the Director and senior management team through your management of financial processes, policy and planning.

About the role:
Working with the CEO, the post-holder will ensure the charity functions effectively and has long-term financial viability and sustainability. The post-holder, in conjunction with the Treasurer, will ensure the Board meets its fiscal responsibilities and all regulatory requirements are complied with.
You will advise, report to, and consult with the CEO on all matters relating to the management of RSG's financial resources and on external factors that may affect its financial situation. You will also prepare, maintain and develop financial policies and procedures, including effective systems of financial control ensuring they are updated as necessary in a timely manner.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Lead the annual budget-setting process, liaising with the CEO and relevant managers to produce income, cost and year-end projections that are agreed upon by the Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees.
- Track the financial performance of RSG against the budget every month, providing monthly financial reports, forecasts and commentary to the Trustees and individual reports to service managers.
- Prepare quarterly management accounts to agreed reporting deadlines.
- Lead the production of the RSG’s annual accounts to ensure they are accurate and submitted on time.
- To lead, manage and develop finance staff, including providing support, guidance and training; appraise and manage performance, ensuring the finance team workflow is managed effectively.
- Provide management support and coaching for staff on financial matters as required.
- Ensure that recording of income and expenditure, bank reconciliation, payment of invoices and reclamation of Gift Aid are administered accurately and on time.
- Produce quarterly VAT returns.
About you:
You will have communication skills sufficient to develop strong professional relationships, support the development of the organisation’s reputation and support the management of change. You will have numerical accuracy with attention to detail and be organised, methodical and precise.
Key skills required for this role:
- Recognised accounting qualification (or part qualification) and evidence of personal development in employment (CIMA/ACCA
- Proven experience at a senior level working in a charity accounts environment.
- At least 2 years supervising people in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- Accounting practices and procedures.
- Clear understanding of confidentiality in written material.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and how it applies to the role.
- Knowledge of HR, recruitment and employment issues.
- Good understanding of relevant IT systems.
- Able to communicate with a wide range of people.
- Advanced user of the use of Xero, Payroll software and Excel.
- Extensive skills in budget and quarterly management accounts preparation.

The Finance Manager & Company Secretary role is a dual role where you will ensure efficient and effective planning and management of the charity’s finances and take charge of secretarial duties. Within this role, you will develop and maintain accounting systems, control and records, while ensuring the charity is compliant with statutory and regulatory requirements. The postholder will ensure appropriate financial policy and procedures are in place, to deliver effective financial management and decision making. To be considered for this role, you will have a professional accountancy qualification – ACCA, ACA or equivalent. You will have demonstrable experience overseeing preparation of statutory, management accounts and audit processes. You will have experience of charity accounting, reporting and legacy administration. You will have experience using accounting software and Microsoft Office. You will also have the ability to explain financial processes to non-finance staff.

About the role
This is a new role at CoppaFeel! as we grow and develop our finance team. As the Senior Finance Manager, you will have responsibility for overseeing CoppaFeel!’s finances . The Senior Finance Manager will be a key role in providing support and analysis to help decision-making for Leadership team.
This role will suit someone who is looking to join a small, dynamic and growing organisation to integrate finance within the organisation through building relationships with the wider team. You will be able to understand the story behind the numbers and work with the wider team to ensure financial cost effectiveness..
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic
- Support on the annual Budgeting and quarterly Forecasting process
- Support with long term financial plans
Reports
- Preparation of budget holder monthly reports and other internal financial reports
- Supporting with cashflow monitoring
Stakeholder
- Support Auditors with audit information
- Line manage finance assistant/intern
- Create and maintain positive relationships with members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and team managers in order to aid in their understanding of budgets and financial statements, and to support them with their day-to-day budget management and finance needs.
Finance processing
- Manage day to day running of the finance function (Banking, team queries)
- Trial balance reconciliation and month end journals
- Manage and maintain appropriate financial policies and financial controls mitigating financial risk and implementing best practice.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Part qualified Accountant or qualified by experience
- Evidence of building successful working relationships externally and internally and at all levels of an organisation
- Able collaborate and use good interpersonal skills to navigate complex and or difficult conversations
- Ability to analyse complex information, problem solve and communicate findings effectively.
- Have good working knowledge of reporting requirements and UK charity regulations experience including SORP
- Have experience driving change and improving processes.
- Experience of line management
- Intermediate to advanced excel skills (pivot tables, sumifs, vlookups etc)

The Role
You will be at the heart of the theatre’s mission, ensuring that financial practices not only meet but exceed industry standards.
You will work closely with the Executive and Senior Management team, providing strategic financial guidance to both the Executive and the Board of Trustees. Your expertise will ensure the theatre meets its financial and governance obligations while directly impacting exciting and diverse activities.
About You
You will be a qualified or soon to be Qualified Accountant (ACA or ACCA) and hold membership of and be accountable to a professional body with evidence of ongoing CPD.
You will have experience of:
- Taking responsibility for the financial running of an organisation with a similar turnover, preferably within the arts or charitable sector.
- Statutory reporting
- Setting/ managing significant budgets and working within financial parameters.
- Supporting and developing the financial skills of senior managers
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with Executive teams and Boards.

- Staff line management including appraisals, training/ development needs and managing issues
- Knowledge of charity accounting and SORP, Theatre Tax Relief and employment law would be beneficial.
