Our team delivers Independent Advocacy within Secure Services across Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. As an Independent Advocate, you will provide crucial support to vulnerable adults facing significant health and social care challenges.

This role involves providing advocacy, participating in drop-ins, and offering tailored support to a diverse group of service users with complex needs. Your work will empower vulnerable adults, helping them navigate and access necessary mental health care and treatment, advocating for their needs and ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon.

You'll deliver persuasive verbal and written representations on their behalf, collaborate with a wide variety of professionals, and take directed actions to address clients' issues. This role demands a flexible attitude, excellent communication, and the ability to handle sensitive information confidently.

You’ll be working proactively in Secure Hospital settings, abiding by security protocols. Relevant training will be provided during a robust induction.

On successful completion of a 3-month probationary period, you will be given the opportunity to complete the Independent Advocacy Practice (IAP) qualification inc. the IMHA Module.

Hours of Work: Full-time hours are 37 hours, working between Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm.

Location: Office based at a variety of sites across Liverpool and Warrington. (Applicants must live within the area and have the ability to travel to different Mersey Care sites)

Starting Salary: £25,877.80 per annum.

Contract type: Permanent

Independent Advocate Requirements:

• Strong communication and time management skills
• Excellent IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, and the ability to learn software packages such as client management databases.
• Attention to detail to ensure accurate recording of records and reporting to meet tight deadlines.

Desirable:

• Previous experience in advocacy, information and advice, or a similar role within health, social care, or the voluntary sector.
• Previous experience of working in secure hospital settings and a thorough understanding of abiding by security protocols and managing risk.
• Demonstrable experience working with vulnerable adults.
• Working knowledge of public and voluntary organisations.

As a Culturally Appropriate Independent Advocate, you will provide crucial support to vulnerable adults facing significant health and social care challenges. You will be actively supporting individuals from minority ethnic backgrounds within Secure Mersey Care Mental Health Hospital sites. This vital role involves providing advocacy, participating in drop-ins, and offering tailored support that respects cultural backgrounds. Your work will empower vulnerable adults, helping them navigate and access necessary mental health care and treatment, advocating for their needs and ensuring their voices are heard and acted upon.

You'll deliver persuasive verbal and written representations on their behalf, collaborate with a wide variety of professionals, and take directed actions to address clients' issues. The successful candidates will be expected to have a good understanding and reach within Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic cultures and have a passion for supporting people with minority ethnic backgrounds to access care and treatment for mental health, particularly where there is unmet need. This role will also link in with the Mersey Care Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Leads and support engagement activities.

This role covers statutory advocacy services including Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy, Independent Mental Health Advocacy and Care Act Advocacy. The post will be home based working across Birmingham including providing advocacy support for the Deaf and hard of hearing people in care homes and on secure mental health hospital wards in our area.

As an Independent Advocate, you will provide crucial support to vulnerable adults facing significant health and social care challenges. Your role involves delivering persuasive verbal and written representations on behalf of clients, collaborating with public and voluntary organisations, and taking directed actions to address client issues. This role demands flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to handle sensitive information confidently.

You will need to have experience of working with Deaf people and providing BSL communication support. Due to this specific element of this role, a minimum proficiency of level 6 British Sign Language (BSL) is required.

About the Service

NYAS provides mental health advocacy to patients at hospitals throughout the UK.

Our service provides independent advocacy to patients within locked secure hospitals and community-based settings where we ensure that patients who are admitted are given a voice to make sure their rights are upheld.

We provide advocacy support for patients with mental health issues and learning disabilities at times when it is important for their wishes and opinions to be heard and their feelings expressed, for instance, representing them during discharge meetings, ward rounds and at multi-disciplinary team meetings.

The primary users of our services are vulnerable adults however some settings do include working with children and young people.

The Vacancy

We are looking to recruit a Self-Employed Independent Mental Health Advocate to work in the following areas:

We are looking to recruit Self-employed Independent Mental health advocates to provide independent and confidential mental health advocacy to qualifying patients and work to agreed outcomes with the patients promoting an understanding of outcomes and options available to them.

• Proven practice experience in delivering direct work to children, young people and vulnerable adults in a social care or mental health setting
• Experience and understanding of child protection/vulnerable adult safeguarding procedures
• Ability to maintain professionalism at all times
• An understanding of the importance of listening to children, young people and vulnerable adults without bias or prejudice with a strong commitment to support and develop and opportunities for children, young people and vulnerable adults to engage with the service.
• If you do not hold the IMHA Qualificaton City and Guilds 3614, we would expect the successful candidate to commit to undertaking the training after being in the role for 6 months, with the expectation of completing this within 12 months after starting the course'

You will be required to complete annual safeguarding and compliance including, Personal Safety, Data Protection, Information Security, Safeguarding and Equality and Diversity. You will be able to subscribe to an e-learning platform provided by NYAS. The platform will provide you with the opportunity to undertake a number of other professional courses that you can complete in your own time to maintain your own CPD. You can do this on the e-learning platform at a significantly reduced cost compared to undertaking each course individually with different providers.

Mind in Brighton and Hove empowers and supports people who have experience of mental health issues in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex. Our Advocacy Services take action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests, and obtain services they need.

We are seeking to appoint an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA) in West Sussex. The role will be based at Langley Green Hospital in Crawley, with regular travel to other acute and forensic wards in West Sussex, such as Meadowfield, Priory and St Magnus. Occasional visits to Brighton head office for meetings and training.

This role involves providing Independent Mental Health Advocacy, working within the framework of the Mental Health Act 1983 to support people to understand their rights under the Act and participate in decisions about their care and treatment across the area of West Sussex. The post requires an understanding of advocacy, experience of managing a client case load, excellent communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a range of professionals, whilst retaining independence.

Hours: Part-time, 28 hours per week.
