Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark
Chief Operating Officer
£125,000
Full-time, permanent
North Lambeth with travel in the Archdiocese and occasionally beyond with some home working possible.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark is one of the largest dioceses in the UK, but more than that it is a vibrant and diverse Diocese with ambitious plans for leading people to Christ. This includes through spreading the Good News of the Gospel, delivering high-quality Catholic education and support for the vulnerable and marginalised.
The Archdiocese has 175 parishes and 162 schools across the whole of London south of the Thames, all of Kent and the eastern parts of Surrey. While parishes operate under individual canonical status, the Archdiocese has extensive operating procedures which govern areas of parish life, activity and operation. This means the Archdiocese supports parishes to flourish, while ensuring they comply with UK law.
Today, Southwark consists of range of diverse communities from inner London and suburban parishes to coastal and rural churches. Southwark’s rich history continues to evolve under the dynamic pastoral leadership of Archbishop John Wilson, who invites all to embrace social justice by putting their faith into action, to and become part of an evangelising and missionary Archdiocese that shares the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Centred on Jesus Christ, the Archdiocese of Southwark will evangelise by helping people to grow in faith and to live in hope. Collectively we can change our world for the better by imitating Christ in showing love, justice, and peace to all. Our mission is to invite people to know the Lord Jesus who offers us life in its fullness.
We are seeking to appoint a Chief Operating Officer who is passionate about this mission and who can provide the leadership that will drive us forward in our work to be a Missionary Diocese.
The Chief Operating Officer provides strategic and operational leadership across the Archdiocese. You will hold responsibility for ensuring that Archdiocesan operations support the mission of the Church, are financially sustainable, and are compliant with legal and regulatory requirements. The Sutton Trust is the UK’s leading social mobility charity. Our programmes help young people from less advantaged backgrounds access highly competitive universities, apprenticeships and careers and our research shapes national policy. Each year, working with our university and employer partners, we support thousands of young people through our programmes and continue that support through our alumni community.
Sutton Trust Online was developed to extend that support digitally. It now complements our university, apprenticeship and career access programmes through online guidance, resources, events, tools and progression support.
As the Trust approaches its 30th anniversary, we want to build on this foundation and think carefully about the next stage of our digital programming: how we make the student experience more coherent, how digital support connects with our wider programmes and how we use data, AI and external partners responsibly to improve guidance over time.
Over the next two years, the Digital Platform Architect will help us define and deliver that next stage. The role will sit between the Trust’s programme ambitions and the technical partners who help support them, bringing the product judgement, technical literacy and delivery grip we need to make informed decisions about digital development, AI, data, systems and student experience.
This is not a traditional programme management role and it is not a hands-on engineering role. You do not need to be a full-stack developer but you will need the confidence to work with engineers, UX specialists, AI partners and suppliers and the ability to turn complex programme ideas into practical product decisions.
This is a chance to shape student-facing digital programming used by thousands of young people each year at a point when AI is changing how students access guidance, information and opportunity. Help us build something ambitious, responsible and genuinely useful: digital support that extends the reach of a 30-year social mobility mission and helps young people navigate key progression points with clearer, more personalised guidance.
What you’ll help deliver
By the end of the two-year period, we expect this role to have helped the Trust develop:

The cost of living, loneliness and the breakdown of community has driven more than 6.3m into deep poverty in the UK. But, at Christians Against Poverty UK (“CAP”), we won’t sit back and let poverty destroy lives. Our vision is to see Transformed Lives, Thriving Churches, and an End to UK Poverty.
We are different to other debt charities. We work by catalysing a church-based movement against poverty. Our local CAP workers and volunteers come alongside people in financial crisis or vulnerability with practical help and the good news of Jesus. Last year nearly 7000 households with debt were supported by our services, 64% were less anxious about their finances afterwards and almost 2,000 people we worked with became debt free in 2025.
Underpinning these outcomes are our products that include Debt Help, Job Clubs, Life Skills and Money Coaching. It is the development of these offerings that form the core focus of the role – and through better integration and innovation we see huge potential.
The role reports to the Chief Agility Officer, and is the chief service architect of the CAP church-based movement’s ecosystem. With a seven figure budget and a lean but capable team of three, it will lead our transition towards a modular suite of services, ensuring every interaction across our audiences are seamless, dignifying and high-impact. It is responsible for balancing safety, regulation and theology with flexibility and innovation, enabling a national movement to grow at scale.
If you bring a track record of developing and executing outstanding service-based products we would love to hear from you. For more details including how to apply please see the application pack below. Closing date 31 August 2026.
