• Supports the Branch Director and Board of Trustees to ensure that the charity meets its governance responsibilities.

Main Responsibilities:

Governance

• Support the Director and Board of Trustees to ensure that the charity meets its governance responsibilities.
• Ensure appropriate presentation and reporting on the progress of the organisation and on all matters relevant to the discharge of its charitable responsibilities.
• Provide in a timely and appropriate manner information that will assist the Trustees in carrying out their responsibilities.
• Monitor changes to statutory requirements on behalf of and in consultation with the Trustees and working with the Trustees and Directors to ensure compliance.
• Lead on all areas of Data Protection across the branch including policy development, revision, and implementation.

Financial Management & Fundraising

• Support the Treasurer in the preparation of the annual operating budget for agreement by Trustees.
• Manage the budget on behalf of and in consultation with the Director, Treasurer and Trustees
• In consultation with the Treasurer and other trustees, set an annual fundraising target.
• Support the development and implementation of a strategy for raising income to meet the needs of the organisation.
• Manage project and area budgets with relevant staff and volunteer leads.

Support the Director and wider Branch Leadership Team in setting the culture and vision for the organisation that will enable staff and volunteers to understand what is expected of them and perform to the highest standards.

• Work closely with the Director and Branch Leadership team to deliver branch strategy and specific services.
• In conjunction with volunteer leads, manage the delivery of the organisation’s restricted funded programmes ensuring project milestones, timescales and financial imperatives are fully met and supporting growth in line with the organisation’s charitable aims.
• Work with the Governance Working Group to implement and manage the organisation’s operational policies and procedures.
• Input into to research and planning of new branch initiatives.
• Monitor changes to national Samaritans policies and guidelines, alerting Directors, and Trustees as appropriate

Line Management

• Work with Trustees and Directors to support the Branch Team to deliver the branch’s volunteering, outreach and fund-raising strategies
• Provide effective line management and leadership to the staff team by managing all aspects of staffing, including recruitment, setting objectives and managing performance.
• Line manage the Business Support Officer, Volunteering Coordinator, Recruitment and Training Coordinator and Fundraising and Events Officer, Trusts and Foundatons Officer and other roles that may from time to time be established
• Act as a role model to staff and colleagues by demonstrating exemplary standards of behaviour, a positive attitude, and high levels of personal performance.
• Identify and develop talent within the team that can be fostered, offering opportunities for personal and career growth where appropriate.
• Work with the Branch Leadership Team to support all staff activities.

Communications

• Work with the Director and Deputy Director for Communications and relevant staff members to support delivery of the branch Communications Plan. This will include coordinating internal and external communications as well as maintaining good relationships with volunteers, partners and other Samaritans branches and the Samaritans Charity.
• Maintain relationships with the Samaritans Central Charity in relation to media activity.
• Work with Director to ensure the Branch is represented on suicide prevention partnerships and involved in strategies with local councils and other organisations within the seven boroughs covered by the branch.
• Work with Branch Leadership Team to ensure the Branch is appropriately represented the branch at external events.

Facilities and Office Management

• Oversees the management of the building on behalf of and in consultation with the Trustees and the Office Manager
• Take overall responsibility for the contracting of services to the organisation
• Take responsibility for compliance with Health and Safety Regulations

Hours of work

1. The basic hours of work are 35 hours per week, spread over five working days. There will be a need to work some evenings and weekend days, so flexibility is essential. The core responsibilities and duties should be carried out during weekdays.

2. The amount of out of hours work will be agreed with the Director on an on-going basis. Time off in lieu will be allowed in agreement with the Director and in line with the current European Working Time Directive.

About this role:

The role of Specialist Support Worker involves supporting a caseload of clients who are experiencing homelessness and taking part in regular outreach visits to temporary accommodation (TA) across Greater Manchester. The role requires the use of specialist knowledge and relationship skills to support clients with varying degrees of mental and physical health, addiction and trauma related issues to engage with health services and to access suitable housing solutions. The Specialist Support Worker is also expected to develop good working relationships with TA Landlords and Managers ensuring that their residents experience of TA is as positive as possible.

This will include advocacy in registering them for medical services and accompanying them to appointments, assisting them in addressing all aspects of physical and mental health and substance addiction needs, as well as advocating for them to get access to suitable housing and social security benefits. The role is dependent on excellent communication and collaborative working with colleagues and a variety of partners, including the Probation Service, local council services and other third sector organisations.

The role requires a high degree of motivation in addition to creativity and flexibility to support people with multiple and compound needs. With a passion to work collaboratively with others for the good of our clients, and with experience of working in a related field in a voluntary or paid capacity.

Making decisions ‘in the moment’ to mitigate risk with clients can place high emotional demands on the job holder. A high degree of emotional intelligence is required to support clients, many of whom have complex emotional needs, with backgrounds of trauma, neglect, abuse and involvement in the criminal justice system. In a role of this nature, you will experience a range of emotions from joy to grief and as such it requires a high level of resilience and self-awareness to cope with the emotional demands of the role.

The role sits within a highly supportive team with all staff in receipt of regular line management and external clinical supervision; with reflective practice actively encouraged in team meetings.

Role description

Service Delivery:

Using frontline practical and procedural knowledge of working with people with multiple and compound needs to support them to engage with health care, wellbeing services, benefits and housing services during their housing vulnerability.

This could include, but is not limited to:

• Assisting people in addressing housing, financial, health and wellbeing needs through the support pathway.
• Connecting people with appropriate support services such as substance misuse services, GP, mental health services, advocating on behalf of the client and accompanying them to appointments.

We’re looking for a Direct Marketing Executive to join the Individual Giving team at Prostate Cancer UK. We’re an ambitious charity with a bold mission and a fantastic culture. This role focuses on acquiring new cash and regular givers across a range of channels including digital, telephone and direct mail, helping fund research that will save and improve lives. 

In this role you’ll help drive forward our ambitious five-year fundraising strategy as we continue to grow income year on year to have the biggest impact for men. You will lead on our value exchange programme, working closely with the digital team and our telephone partner to continually optimise results. This is a great opportunity to gain experience across a multi-channel campaign. You will also work on wider telephone conversion campaigns and direct mail as well as other test channels with the aim of recruiting new regular and cash supporters as well as re-engaging those who have lapsed. You’ll also help develop and test welcome journeys to engage supporters with our work and make them feel valued. You’ll look for ways to test and innovate to drive the best results. You’ll collaborate with colleagues from across the organisation to drive the best creative, messaging, targeting and data insights.

Experience or knowledge of managing direct marketing campaigns across a range of channels, ideally digital, telephone or direct mail, and preferably gained from a fundraising environment.

You’ll possess first class communication and project management skills; a strong team ethic and you will be at ease working with key internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You’ll be a self-starter, with a curious nature and a keen eye for detail.Knowledge of data protection and sector compliance would also be beneficial.

We are seeking an experienced and empathetic Mental Health & Wellbeing Project Worker to contribute to the development and delivery of flexible support services which address the psychological and emotional needs of children, young people and families living with the effects of domestic abuse, in North Tyneside and Northumberland. You will help to develop, organise and facilitate key aspects of the service as requested by the Team Coordinator such one-to-one support interventions, group work, and youth participation opportunities in a variety of settings including in-house, schools and community venues. Post is to be predominantly based in Northumberland.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver flexible one to one support sessions, using a range of interventions to assess and positively contribute to the individual wellbeing needs of children and young people impacted by domestic abuse.
• Support service users, particularly within the 11-16 age group to develop personal and life skills, promoting self-esteem and independence, and raising awareness of other support services and opportunities available to them and their families.
• Contribute to the planning and delivery of group work, activities and events, including the continued development of service user participation
• Work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to ensure coordinated care and refer service users to additional sources of help and protection as needed.
• Adhere to safeguarding, confidentiality, and equal opportunities policies while maintaining accurate and confidential records, reporting appropriately, and complying with organisational guidelines.
• Participate in training, supervision, and team activities, contributing flexibly to service development and supporting broader organisational goals as required by management.

About You

• Holds qualifications and relevant experience in social care, childcare, youth work, or a therapeutic field
• Experience working directly with children and young people with an excellent understanding of common issues relating to child development, mental health and wellbeing
• Experienced in one-to-one casework, group facilitation, youth programmes, and multi-agency working, with a proven ability to assess needs and connect individuals to appropriate support services.
• Effective communicator with the ability to engage sensitively and non-judgementally with service users, demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and a commitment to empowering individuals.
• Skilled in managing workloads, maintaining accurate records, writing reports, and meeting deadlines under pressure, with strong time management and attention to detail.
• A motivated, flexible team player who values equality and diversity, and brings creativity and initiative to their practice.
• Driver with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes. This role involves frequent travel to and from locations across North Tyneside and Northumberland to meet the varied needs of service users.

The Refuge Service provide emergency accommodation to women and children fleeing domestic abuse and sexual violence. Refuge Support workers provide emotional and practical support this can include housing support, legal options, reporting to the police, help around child contact, benefits, financial advice and accessing therapeutic support services.

About the Role

As a Refuge Support Worker in our Enfield refuge, you will help create a safe, welcoming environment for women and families escaping abuse. You’ll handle phone enquiries, prepare rooms for new arrivals, support with deliveries, and help maintain clean, safe communal areas.

You’ll introduce new residents to Solace services, explain key policies, and ensure they are aware of internal and external support options. Working alongside each resident, you will develop support plans, assist with benefits and housing applications, accompany them to appointments when needed, and help them work towards safe, independent move‑on accommodation.

The role also includes collecting and recording payments, completing health and safety checks, maintaining accurate records, and building strong working relationships with local authorities and partner agencies.

You’ll be part of a supportive team, attend regular meetings and supervision, follow all safeguarding, equality, and organisational policies, and contribute to the smooth and safe running of the refuge.

The Head Gardener role offers a unique opportunity to work in a historic and peaceful environment. The Head Gardener has overall responsibility for the presentation, management, maintenance, upkeep and agreed development of Bishopthorpe Palace Gardens and line management of the garden staff engaged as employees and volunteers.

This post gives an excellent opportunity to work in a small, friendly, environment, in unusual and pleasant surroundings. Colleagues at Bishopthorpe Palace work as a small and close-knit team and support each other at busy periods with flexibility and good humour. The person appointed will relate directly to the Archbishop, Chief of Staff, Palace and Events Manager and Palace Warden. Working closely with the Assistant Gardener, casual staff and volunteers working in the grounds.

MAIN DUTIES

Responsible for the maintenance and management of the grounds of Bishopthorpe Palace, ensuring that the appearance of the entire garden site is kept to the best standard at all times including:

• Planning and balance of year-round needs of garden/estate.
• Designing the winter and summer annual bedding and arranging the
  purchase and cultivation of the plants.
• Maintaining paths, perimeter and riverbank vegetation
• Hands-on weeding, pruning, dead-heading, plant division and replanting
  where necessary throughout the grounds.
• Directing and assisting in the care, cultivation and maintenance of all
  plants, seasonal planting, borders, shrubs, trees, lawns and ponds.
• Management of wildlife in the grounds.
• Management of the pond.
• Planting of seeds and bulbs and caring for them during the winter.
• Ensure the safety of paths and the grounds during the winter, including
  clearing snow and salting paths
• Hands-on working with the garden team to achieve autumn leaf clearance
  and appropriate disposal.
• Hands-on working with the garden team to ensure all lawns and hedges
  are kept trimmed to the required standard.
• Irrigating all garden pots/planters and ornamental areas, including lawns,
  to ensure good growing conditions.
• Propagation of garden plant material for use in the garden and plant sales at garden events.

• Monitoring and control of weeds and algae in gravel paths, paving, ponds and borders and taking appropriate action.

Responsible for the management of the Palace woodland including:

• the use of chainsaws to fell and crosscut timber.
• monitoring existing trees and re-planting when necessary to ensure the continuation of a safe and healthy woodland.
  

Develop and implement a garden risk management control plan which includes, but is not limited to, the inspection and periodic pruning of trees

Responsible for the purchase, storage, handling and application of pesticides and weed killers used throughout the Palace grounds adhering to current Health and Safety legislation.

Ensuring the garden bothy, garden tool and machinery sheds, potting shed and greenhouse are all kept in a tidy, safe and well-presented manner

Manage the garden budget in conjunction with the Palace and Events Manager and Accounts Manager including:

• Production of an annual budget for expenditure relating to the maintenance and management of the grounds of Bishopthorpe Palace.
• Submitting requests and invoices for expenditure within the agreed budget for Bishopthorpe Palace garden.
• Agreeing expenditure items with the Palace and Events Manager and Accounts Manager in advance.
• Preparation of a schedule of maintenance and replacement for all machinery and tools including annual servicing.

HEALTH AND SAFETY DUTIES

• Attendance at Bishopthorpe Palace H&S meetings.
• Ensure all garden works are in full compliance with Health and Safety at Work and COSHH regulations.
• Ensure all chain saw and garden chemical licences remain current and comply with Health & Safety legislation.
• In consultation with the Palace & Events Manager and Palace Warden ensuring the safety of garden users by regular checks on trees, access areas, steps and paths and reporting or repairing any hazards.
• Responsible for monitoring all personal protection equipment used in the department to ensure expiry dates for critical safety equipment are adhered here.
• Responsible for maintenance of machinery and tools, including annual servicing.
  

LINE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for the line management of the Assistant Gardener.
• Responsible for the line management of casual and volunteer garden staff.
• Overseeing, directing and training garden staff when they are working in the garden.
• Assist the Palace manager with the sourcing, management and supervision of contractors working within the Palace grounds and woodland.
• Assist with the interviewing and appointment of future garden staff.

OTHER DUTIES

• Attendance of regular Bishopthorpe Palace Operation meetings to update on site work by other departments.
• Attendance of management training courses and in-house training and briefing courses when requested.
• Lead on internal and external communications for the Gardening team, including attending office meetings, including the huddle.
• Liaising with the wider Bishopthorpe Palace Estates team to enable maintenance and restoration work via garden areas and agreeing making-good costs for the garden.
• Liaising with the Hospitality team to enable smooth running of their events in both the Palace building and garden
• Dealing with garden enquiries and giving guided tours of the garden.
• Setting up garden open days and attending all garden events at Bishopthorpe Palace as requested by the Palace and Events Manager, to help with stewarding, event presentation and security.
• Helping with the security of the Palace when required, including:
  • Dealing with alarms - subject to their home location
  • Locking external gates
  • Making the Palace and grounds secure.
