Job description

The organisation

Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) is the Army’s national charity, supporting soldiers, veterans and their families in times of need. With an annual income of around £14 million, ABF provides support directly to individuals and families, as well as funding other charities and organisations delivering specialist services.

In 2025/26, ABF helped 74,000 people across 51 countries and funded 94 other charities and organisations delivering frontline services. Its support covers areas including independent living, elderly care, education and employability, mental wellbeing, families and housing.

The job

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Finance Manager will take responsibility for producing accurate and timely financial information, strengthening financial controls and providing insight, advice and support to budget holders across the organisation. You will also manage and develop the Assistant Accountant.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Producing monthly management accounts, variance analysis and written commentary.
  • Supporting the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes.
  • Acting as a trusted finance business partner to budget holders, providing insight, constructive challenge and practical advice.
  • Managing the day-to-day accounting and reporting activities of ABF’s trading subsidiary.
  • Preparing quarterly VAT returns and the annual partial exemption calculation.
  • Supporting the preparation of year-end statutory accounts and audit files.
  • Working with the Director of Finance to strengthen financial controls and improve financial management.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes and make better use of automation and finance systems.
  • Managing, supporting and developing the Assistant Accountant.

The person

We are looking for a fully qualified accountant who combines strong management accounting and financial reporting experience with the ability to build effective relationships with colleagues outside Finance.

You will bring:

  • A recognised professional accounting qualification, such as ACCA, ACA or CIMA.
  • Strong management accounting, financial analysis and management reporting experience.
  • Experience of preparing quarterly VAT returns and partial exemption calculations.
  • Strong finance business partnering skills, including the confidence to constructively challenge and advise budget holders.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and a high level of proficiency with accounting software.
  • Effective people management skills and a collaborative, professional working style.
  • Experience of working in, or providing services to, a charity would be advantageous, as would experience of Oracle NetSuite.

What’s in it for you?

The role offers a broad mix of management accounting, business partnering, financial control, process improvement and people management, providing good scope to develop professionally while working for an organisation with a clear charitable purpose.

Alongside a salary of £60,000-£65,000, benefits include:

  • 30 days’ holiday plus bank holidays
  • Pension contributions matched up to 8%
  • Hybrid working, with two days per week in the office
  • Life insurance and employee wellbeing support
  • Annual leave purchase scheme and TOIL
  • Interest-free season ticket loan, Cycle to Work scheme and Perkbox benefits

How to apply

Applications close at 23:59 on Sunday 15 November 2026. Interviews will take place w/c 23rd November.

The recruitment process is being managed on behalf of ABF by Peter O’Sullivan, Business Director, Hays Senior Finance.
