Your new role
As the Senior Tax Manager, you will take the lead on all day-to-day tax matters across a variety of tax areas, primarily VAT (partial exemption) and SDLT. You will review VAT returns, support operational teams, provide detailed tax advice on new projects, manage relationships with HMRC, and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation. You'll also collaborate closely with colleagues in corporation tax, employment tax, payroll, and finance, while contributing to high quality reporting and internal guidance. The role is full-time, permanent, and based in a central London location.

What you'll need to succeed

• You will ideally have a CTA, CCAB, CIMA or equivalent professional qualification in tax or accounting.
• Significant tax experience, specifically VAT (partial exemption) and systems work.
• Experience in the property, real estate or housing sectors would be beneficial.
• Excellent communication skills, with a proven ability to prepare and deliver high-quality written and verbal reports to senior stakeholders.

About the Role.  

We are investing in our Fundraising and Development team to deliver an ambitious 5-year fundraising strategy. The Trusts and Philanthropy Manager is pivotal in securing philanthropic support from trusts and foundations, legacies, major donors, and corporate partners.

 
Over the strategy period you will be responsible for developing annual trust and grant income to £500,000+, by securing grants of five figures and above and gaining multi-year donations.Using your experience in creating strong cases for support, including unrestricted costs, and pipeline development, you will work with two part-time colleagues to increase annual income from major donors, legacies and corporate partners to £250,000+ (excluding exceptional legacy gifts).

What we expect from you

Working alongside the Head of Operations, CEO and department heads, your responsibilities will cover Shift.ms and its wholly owned subsidiary, realworld ms ltd, as follows:

Financial management

• Be the primary point of contact for our Treasurer, Accountant and External Auditor;

• Review and constantly improve processes and internal controls for finance;

• Lead the development of annual budgets and shorter/longer term forecasts as needed;

• Manage accounting, budget and cash flow,  and working with the CEO, develop cost reduction strategies as needed;

• Prepare monthly management accounts incorporating variance analysis of budgets vs. actuals and headline narrative;

• Manage monthly payroll with an external payroll provider;

• Draft consolidated statutory accounts for audit and lead the coordination of year-end audit;

• Prepare quarterly VAT returns for the Group and be the main point of contact for HMRC;

• Make recommendations for corporate gift aid donations based on performance and future forecasts for the subsidiary;

• Present finance updates in-person at quarterly board meetings normally held in London;

• Manage and lead FinCom meetings, typically held quarterly;

• Attend the trustee annual away weekend.

Bookkeeping 

• Lead the financial operations of the charity including recording transactions onto the finance system (Quickbooks), managing cashflow, invoicing, accounts payable/receivable, processing of purchase invoices and supplier payments;

• Complete month end reconciliations as part of the preparation of monthly management accounts;

• Track, calculate and process intercompany recharges to ensure costs sit within the correct entity;

• Track and ensure correct treatment and reporting of restricted/unrestricted funds;

• Process employee, volunteer & trustee expense claims;

• Manage the relationship with an external payroll bureau, liaising with them to ensure payroll is processed accurately and paid on time;

• Support employee onboarding including obtaining details for payroll and pre employment checks.

Other 

• Collaborate with senior stakeholders on projects and reporting; 

• Track income receipts and projections for weekly income generation calls with heads of department;

• Process gift aid claims;

Salary: £40,000-45,000 dependent on relevant expertise

We are currently hiring for a permanent financial accountant with a focus on the financial and statutory reporting aspects of the team. This role will play a pivotal role in delivering the Finance team business plan and support the Charity in meeting all financial regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• You will be responsible for the preparation of year-end financial and statutory accounts and take a lead role in liaising with our external auditors to deliver a timely and efficient year end audit. 
• You will have specific responsibility for maintain the Fixed Asset register, which includes updating the property valuations, a significant part of the balance sheet.
• You will lead on the accounting for restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring unspent funds are appropriately managed and robust reporting.
•  You will demonstrate a strong control ethos and encourage the same in all aspects of financial reporting.  
• You will work closely with the Head of Financial Accounting & Processing and with other Finance team members and be a collaborative part of the team. 
•  You will have the opportunity to be involved in various other finance/charity projects, bringing your experience and expertise to the table.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Qualified Accountant (CCAB / CIMA) 
• Strong Finance System usage experience, ideally Unit4.
• A solid understanding of FRS102 and Charities SORP, ideally with familiarity for the changes being applied this year.
•  Ability to demonstrate initiative, high attention to detail, and collaborative working approach.
• Finance process and controls understanding, and experience of working within a control function.
• Strong stakeholder management experience.
• Advanced Excel skills and proven experience in using multiple systems with minimal guidance.

About the Role

Our General Advice Team covers a range of different projects, in this role the Trussel Trust Foodbank Advisor will give advice face-to-face within in foodbank outreach locations and CAL offices across Liverpool. The post holder will need to be self-motivated, organised and flexible, delivering generalist level advice and information with the ability to travel across locations in Liverpool.

The primary purpose of this role is to Improve financial well-being through:
