Job description

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic policy professional to lead a new function supporting the organisation’s various aims.

Making The Leap is a small and innovative social justice charity that aims to make a big difference. From direct delivery, to advocacy and leadership, we refuse to stay in our lane and believe passionately that those we exist to serve have the right to be anything they want to be. To say that this is an exciting time for the organisation would be an understatement, as our incredible funders, donors, partners and supporters have given us the chance to move to the next level, and have further influence and delivery nationally.

The shared soul of the organisation is to be passionate about helping young people from less-advantaged backgrounds; build up other charities and community groups and want to partner with them or support them; want to work with businesses and organisations to get things done; and care deeply about addressing racial inequity generally (and anti-Blackness in particular). The people here work hard, are good at what they do, and for so many it is ‘home’, with an average tenure of 11 years.

The organisation has a number of strands: core Making The Leap; the UK Social Mobility Awards; the Social Mobility Podcast and our brand new initiative Black Charity Leaders.

Location - Kensal Green, London

Due to Covid-19 and the current situation, the role is temporarily home-based.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Performance, the Head of Policy is responsible for policy development and research relating to the various strands of the organisation: promoting social mobility for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds; the role of charity and community groups in supporting young people; the involvement of employers in tackling social mobility and race equity; and the progress of Black, Asian and other racialised minority employees in the charity sector.


  • The Post Holder must at all times carry out their duties with due regard to Making The Leap’s policies including Equal Opportunities, Health & Safety and Safeguarding Policy
  • Lead the development and delivery of high quality and impactful policy and research work to ensure Making The Leap are influential thought leaders in the areas of our strategic focus
  • Contribute to the overall strategy of the organisation as it moves forward, ensuring that our policy positions are deeply integrated into all marketing and communications functions and strategy
  • Work across Making The Leap to ensure our policy objectives are embedded in the work we do with young people, government, employers, charities and community groups
  • Conduct and/or commission research and evidence in support of policy positions
  • To ensure that Making The Leap stays abreast of key policy changes and relevant external issues that could impact on the organisation and our supporters
  • Identify business development opportunities in response to policy areas
  • As a member of the management team, work closely with peers and senior management to effectively contribute to the strategic and operational management and development of the organisation
  • To take collective responsibility as a member of the management team for delivering against our business plan and key priorities
  • Build and maintain a network of decision makers and allies, and develop and nurture partnerships to achieve the organisation’s ambitions
  • Work with the communications team to maintain and grow our external profile, hone our messaging and increase our visibility across all media
  • Represent the organisation at meetings with key external stakeholders
  • Be the key point of contact on all policy matters
  • Any other duties within the general scope of the post


Experience of:

  • At least five years’ experience of leading the production of policy and research outputs including full research programmes, reports and surveys
  • Proven experience in research and evaluation management and methodology including analysing quantitative and qualitative data
  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience of developing, delivering and evaluating evidence-based campaigns
  • A track record of high performing and impactful delivery
  • Successfully drafting policy papers, some of which may involve primary research or commissioning external research
  • Extensive knowledge of social policy including funding opportunities in this area
  • Clearly demonstrable background in the development and delivery of policy positions

Skills and knowledge:

  • An interest and understanding of social mobility, charity and race equity
  • An ability to understand, construct and maintain consistent messaging for the organisations’ brands
  • Excellent verbal and written communicator; able to synthesise wide-ranging ideas and recommendations
  • Lead and manage a function to deliver across their full remit and build knowledge in key areas
  • Excellent organisation and project management skills

Working hours: Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm

Nest Pension Scheme: 8% contribution (5% non-contributory)
