About the Role

In your role you will be responsible for developing, delivering and overseeing RSPB’s wider countryside conservation work and managing associated staff on the islands to ensure conservation of the many species and habitats of international importance and so ensure delivery of relevant outcomes of RSPB’s Saving Nature Strategy across Orkney. The role will lead, manage and develop the conservation team in the area, helping to deliver a work programme focused on our priority landscapes including some of Scotland’s rarest and most iconic species and habitats.

This will be achieved by using detailed knowledge and experience of the appropriate conservation toolkit to ensure we achieve our objectives. This may include site safeguard casework, species recovery work, land management advice, overseeing conservation projects and engagement in land use and marine policy.

This post will have a key role in instigating and managing programmes and projects across the Area and in association with RSPB colleagues. This includes those led by RSPB in the local area such as Species on the Edge and those where delivery is achieved across wider partnerships. You will be proactive with other island stakeholders to deliver ambitious targets for key marine, upland, wetland, peatland & farmland species and habitats. The position will have an important external role, building positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders so that RSPB’s policies and messages are understood and furthered within relevant partnerships and fora. As the conservation leader within the area team, you will contribute expertise to the Area management structures, monitoring and reporting on the work plan and development of new work plans and/or project ideas. You will also be expected to contribute expertise and experience to RSPB’s policy and advocacy work and contribute to the delivery of our funding and communications objectives, through communicating our conservation messages in various ways.

You will ensure we can identify threats to priority species and habitats and work with internal staff and external stakeholders to develop and implement projects, strategies and programmes of work to address these threats. You will lead on casework response in the islands and manage projects and internal budgets and staff. You will help shape where we carry out species recovery work across the islands and help spot out future opportunities to work on our key species and habitats. You will help shape and deliver the Orkney Local biodiversity action plan in partnership with stakeholders. You will liaise with our research, planning and policy colleagues to conserve our island wildlife

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject or ability to show equivalent work experience
• Experience of managing staff or volunteers

• Ability to form effective teams (both internal and partnership) and work effectively as a team player and leader

• Sufficient understanding of landscape scale conservation; land use and management; planning systems; to be able to lead casework response and advise staff on appropriate responses and interventions.

LWS Ecologist - Species Survival Fund: 'Bogs and Bitterns'

“Bogs and Bitterns": Somerset Wetland Restoration is one of twenty schemes being funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund.

As Project Ecologist you will be at the forefront of delivering, working with landowners and communities to undertake the survey and monitoring work across Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) in Somerset.

This project is funded by the Government's Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm's-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency. “Bogs and Bitterns: Somerset Wetland restoration is one of twenty schemes being funded across the country. Within our project area we aim to deliver 50 hectares of wetland habitat, restoring and expanding to improve and create quality ‘stepping stone’ sites of high quality biodiversity and to enable species abundance across the wider county.

As Project Ecologist you will be at the forefront of delivering, working with landowners and communities to undertake the survey and monitoring work across these sites. Year one of the project will be focused on targeted ecological surveys and engagement with year two focused on completing surveys and delivering small-scale capital works. The outcome of the project is to better understand the condition of our Local Wildlife sites and to have delivered targeted individual small-scale actions.

Responsibility 1: Develop and Oversee Relationships

Share knowledge and expertise by:

• Taking responsibility for a range of ecological and habitat consultancy and advisory projects.
• Being responsible for corresponding with landowners and communities to access survey sites.
• Carrying out preliminary appraisals.
• Undertaking LWS habitat survey work and producing high quality technical reports within the project area whilst liaising with the SERC LWS Ecologist on this delivery.
• Undertaking and coordinating with volunteers and the wilder project team including Reserves and Nature Recovery Team species survey monitoring and evaluating work across the project area.
• Undertaking a wide range of complex, technical and professional tasks in differing situations, with a degree of personal responsibility and autonomy. It is important to be able to work both alone and as a member of the team.
• Adopting environmentally friendly working practices, setting, and maintaining high personal standards of efficiency and customer care and fostering a ‘can do’ culture based on ownership, initiative, teamwork, and exchange of information.  All staff are ambassadors for the organisation both internally and externally and are expected to always act in a professional manner. They are required to abide by organisational rules, policies and procedures as laid down in the staff handbook.

Responsibility 2: Data Collection and Records

Be responsible by:

• Supporting the ongoing LWS Programme in Somerset, following LWS protocols.
• Capturing and recording LWS habitat/species and condition data and aid in the inputting of this data, supporting updating of LWS records and feeding into the SERC database.

Responsibility 3: Project Fund Management

Support and be accountable by:

• Identifying, coordinating and delivering small scale capital funding and actions across LWS and PCNR network, whilst managing project budgets.
• Working with the communications team where applicable to promote and highlight the project achievements.

What's the role about

This is a key role working alongside our Project Manager and Senior Race Equity specialist to shape our ways of working to be more inclusive. This will include coordinating activities, supporting taskforce members, researching, create content and training materials with support.

The role would suit somebody with strong organisational and communication skills with a background in race equity work who wants to apply these skills in the conservation sector, or someone with demonstrable coordination/administration skills and EDI knowledge and experience that wants to step into the race equity space.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Experience of coordinating and synchronising resources and people, in the delivery of anti-racist or EDI related activities and events.
• Awareness of the intersectional impact of protected characteristics, the Equality Act 2010 and barriers to people of colour, disabled people and people in other protected groups at work. 
• Experience of generating ideas that relate to EDI topics, creating short written or visual content, making information accessible to different audiences as a blog, video, infographic or other content formats.
• Strong administration and organisational skills, including the ability to manage data or records, manage own time and prioritise, create basic project plans and meet agreed deadlines.
• Experience of Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and calendar or similar
• Strong IT skills across a range of software including knowledge or willingness to learn using SharePoint to a good standard.
• Experience of working with ethnically diverse groups or networks in a workplace or voluntary setting with a coproduction approach.

Within our project area we aim to deliver 50 hectares of wetland habitat restoring and expanding to improve and create quality ‘stepping stone’ sites of high quality biodiversity and to enable species abundance across the wider county. We are looking for an individual with both hands on experience of delivering nature conservation work and project management expertise.

As Species Survival Project Fund Coordinator, you will have two main areas of work. The main part of the role is to provide project management and co-ordination of the Species Survival Fund project, ensuring we are on track, including meeting budget requirements, collating information and reporting as required, and providing line manager support to the project Ecologist. The second part of the role is to also to work on the development of specific species and habitat works at the Brides Mound and St Brigid’s Chapel site in Glastonbury; here SWT is working in close co-operation with the Friends of Brides Mound and Southwest Heritage Trust and is funded by the Glastonbury Town Deal Fund.

Responsibility 1: Manage the Project

• Share knowledge and expertise by:
• Providing project management and coordination and building relationship with key stakeholders.
• Ensuring concise information gathering and reporting for the Species Survival Fund project.
• Providing and sharing expertise on species survival, whilst coordinating evidence and monitoring of the project.
• Undertaking a wide range of complex, technical and professional tasks in differing situations, with a degree of personal responsibility and autonomy. It is important to be able to work both alone and as a member of the team.
• Adopting environmentally friendly working practices, setting, and maintaining high personal standards of efficiency and customer care and fostering a ‘can do’ culture based on ownership, initiative, teamwork, and exchange of information.  All staff are ambassadors for the organisation both internally and externally and are expected to always act in a professional manner. They are required to abide by organisational rules, policies and procedures as laid down in the staff handbook.

Responsibility 2: Line Management

Provide leadership and support by:

• Providing direct line management to the Species Survival Fund Project Ecologist to ensure best practice and to drive the project forward.
• Managing the workload, performance, and personal development of the Species Survival Fund Project Ecologist.
• Having budgetary responsibility for the project and expenditure.
• Keeping abreast of national and international species recovery programmes and relate these to Somerset.

Responsibility 3: Work with Partners and Volunteers

Provide leadership and training opportunities as an influencer for the Trust by:

• Contributing to discussions, workstreams and providing support to the developing St Brigid’s Chapel and Brides Mound Project.
• Leading on working with other partners to design and implement habitat works across this landholding.
• Enabling the development of volunteering and training opportunities with the Friends of Brides Mound so they are resilient as a community to continue managing this land as part of the nature recovery network at the end of current funded works.
• Working in close collaboration with the communications and fundraising teams to promote the project including the production of articles, blogs and social media posts.

General

Your duties include:

• To co-plan and co-deliver weekly Generate Voices self-advocacy group meetings, both online and in person, supporting self-advocates with learning disabilities and/ or autism to ensure they have the tools to make informed decisions, their rights are upheld, their voices are heard, empower them to advocate for themselves and engage members of the self-advocacy groups in planning.
• To work alongside a coordinator with lived experience of learning disability and/ or autism to co-manage all self-advocacy activities, plan future agendas and decide what other speakers and trainers to invite to the forum jointly.
• To provide members with engagement and participation opportunities, and ensure members are meaningfully involved in meaningful and impact focussed projects.
• Develop and deliver effective lobbying and campaigning of key decision makers including attending meetings with those with influence, in order that the views and wishes of self-advocates become known and acted upon. This includes finding ways of encouraging key decision makers to engage with members and take their views and wishes into account when making decisions and setting policy.
• Contact other organisations that campaign for the rights of people with a learning disability and seek opportunities to involve members from the forum in these as appropriate. (Examples – Mencap, Lewisham Speaking Up & Learning Disability England campaigns).
• Delivering and developing project reporting and monitoring and to co-operate with and support any external evaluators.
