The Volunteer Development Officer (Assemble) will work within the Volunteering Development Department to deliver the volunteering elements of our new corporate strategy, which has a focus on increasing people powered conservation, focussing on diversity and raising our internal people capabilities.
Assemble is our volunteering management system and this role will be the lead contact, champion and be the system expert from the RSPB business perspective (volunteering) for Assemble – ensuring volunteering and volunteers get the best from Assemble.

What's the role about?
The Volunteering Development Department are the subject matter experts for volunteering and will drive the culture change needed to achieve the required change and growth in volunteers and volunteering delivering our ambitious strategy demands.
As the Volunteer Management System (Assemble) lead, this role will:
- Proactively make changes to Assemble (through the System Administrator) as required to support, improve and develop business operations.
- Document RSPB Business processes linked to Assemble
- Assist in developing and delivering training and other resources such as promotional talks, intranet articles and team presentations, to promote uptake of the system and support users in getting the best from Assemble
- With the System Administrator (in our Digital team) ensure Assemble functionality (existing and new), work as required for users and the RSPB
- Provide excellent Customer Care and support to all Assemble Users resolving issues and challenges within our service level agreement.
- Ensure data and metrics from Assemble are available to meet business need, funding bid requirements and our annual reporting requirements internally and externally Identify and champion opportunities to get even more from Assemble to meet our volunteering strategy and improve and enhance our support for volunteers and the user experience on Assemble.
- This role would have an individual specialism but with the ability to be flexible to cover the priorities required across the department and the UK wide needs.
Essential skills, knowledge and experience:
- Comprehensive understanding and knowledge of volunteering innovation, best practice and sector standards.
- Demonstrable track record of having successfully and effectively developed a range of volunteering roles and schemes across an organisation.
- Experience of providing operational advice and guidance on volunteer involvement to people at all levels and building effective stakeholder relationships.

The S&I directorate analyses current and emerging policy and sets the Trust’s strategy and standards for regional delivery across all the Trust’s activities. The Environment and Climate action team is responsible for delivering the Trust’s strategy and policy on all environment and climate related sustainability issues, including environmental compliance as a minimum and achieving biodiversity net gain.
Reporting to the Head of Environment and Climate action, the Environmental Management and Compliance manager role will be responsible for the Trust’s Environmental Management System and its associated policies, commitments, and standards, linked to the Trusts evolving sustainability and organisational strategies. The role will require establishing good relationships with other teams in the Trust to drive sound environmental practice from our operations and 3rd party activities.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Key Accountabilities:
- Responsible for, and day-to-day management of the Trust’s environmental management system
- Deliver a programme of activities and updates to environmental standards, guidance and tools, ensuring that these are delivered on time and within budget. This forms part of a system refresh that will be delivered this financial year.
- Work with internal technical experts and the Trust’s legal team to ensure that the standards meet regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with Trust operational and delivery teams to ensure that standards are deliverable and align with existing and emerging business processes.
- Manage external technical input where requires (e.g. from consultants)
- Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents, near misses and ensure the production and dissemination of key learnings
- Preparation of board and Environmental Advisory Group (EAG) papers and acts as secretariat of EAG meetings
- Producing case studies and other examples of best practice for internal and external audiences
- Developing and delivering environmental training
- Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
- Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
- IEMA Practitioner qualification or equivalent
- Experience of administering environmental management systems, including a good understanding of ISO14000 family of environmental standards.
- Authoring company standards and guidance
- Broad understanding of key environmental themes and associated legislation (Air Quality, Biodiversity, Water Quality, Waste, Pollution Prevention and Control, Invasive Species)
- Experience of investigating environmental incidents and near misses
- Working knowledge of GIS and using spatial data to support environmental strategies
- Project/ programme management skills
- Developing reporting systems and managing environmental data to report progress
- Developing project business cards
The role will be home-based, with the expectation to attend main regional hubs either at Milton Keynes, Birmingham, or Little Venice (Paddington), for collaborative working. This is a national role, requiring collaboration with teams in all six of the Trust’s regions. There will be an expectation that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout the regional waterway network.

About you
This role is based with our Wales & Southwest team, and we are looking for someone with particular experience and developed networks across this region. Our successful Enterprise Manager may previously have worked in roles such as Partnerships Manager, Development Manager, Fundraising Manager, Partnerships & Fundraising Manager, and will ideally have good knowledge and confidence in identifying and successfully bidding for project funding via government departments, regional agencies, statutory funders, and charitable trusts. - Develop and execute marketing and promotional campaigns to raise awareness of legacy giving opportunities within the organisation. Responsible for operational management of the staff team, volunteers and site. Oversee and develop partnership working arrangements with other agencies and providers, to enhance the offer to local residents. “Empty Spaces to Homes” is a ground-breaking initiative focused on a circular buildings approach that already has a feasible proof of concept from piloting, with strong upscaling potential. The premise is simple; unlocking the potential of long term empty commercial spaces to create affordable housing for vulnerable people. As well as the social benefits of adding to affordable housing stock, the Empty Spaces to Homes approach of retrofitting existing structures – at a much lower carbon cost - offers a greener and more sustainable way to meet the housing gap, in comparison to the environmental impact of the new build construction industry. Breaking down long-standing barriers to resource-efficient renovation is essential if the UK is to play its part in meeting ambitious global decarbonisation targets.
Purpose of The role
The UK Housing Advocacy Manager will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission by leading advocacy efforts, shaping policies, and promoting sustainable housing solutions for affordable housing in Great Britain, particularly through our groundbreaking initiative "Empty Spaces to Homes."
As this is a new role, and is being recruited alongside the Head of Global Affairs and Advocacy, key responsibilities will include the establishment of a new function at Habitat GB. It involves working closely with colleagues across the Habitat GB organisation and contributing to advocacy efforts across the Habitat network at global and regional levels through engagement, strategy and shared learning.
