We currently have an opportunity for an Environmental Compliance Manager within our National Environment & Climate Action Team within the Strategy & Impact Directorate. The S&I directorate analyses current and emerging policy and sets the Trust’s strategy and standards for regional delivery across all the Trust’s activities. The Environment and Climate action team is responsible for delivering the Trust’s strategy and policy on all environment and climate related sustainability issues, including environmental compliance as a minimum and achieving biodiversity net gain.
Reporting to the Head of Environment and Climate action, the Environmental Management and Compliance manager role will be responsible for the Trust’s Environmental Management System and its associated policies, commitments, and standards, linked to the Trusts evolving sustainability and organisational strategies. The role will require establishing good relationships with other teams in the Trust to drive sound environmental practice from our operations and 3rd party activities.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
Key Accountabilities:
- Responsible for, and day-to-day management of the Trust’s environmental management system
- Deliver a programme of activities and updates to environmental standards, guidance and tools, ensuring that these are delivered on time and within budget. This forms part of a system refresh that will be delivered this financial year.
- Work with internal technical experts and the Trust’s legal team to ensure that the standards meet regulatory requirements.
- Liaise with Trust operational and delivery teams to ensure that standards are deliverable and align with existing and emerging business processes.
- Manage external technical input where requires (e.g. from consultants)
- Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents, near misses and ensure the production and dissemination of key learnings
- Preparation of board and Environmental Advisory Group (EAG) papers and acts as secretariat of EAG meetings
- Producing case studies and other examples of best practice for internal and external audiences
- Developing and delivering environmental training
- Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times.
- Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
- IEMA Practitioner qualification or equivalent
- Experience of administering environmental management systems, including a good understanding of ISO14000 family of environmental standards.
- Authoring company standards and guidance
- Broad understanding of key environmental themes and associated legislation (Air Quality, Biodiversity, Water Quality, Waste, Pollution Prevention and Control, Invasive Species)
- Experience of investigating environmental incidents and near misses
- Working knowledge of GIS and using spatial data to support environmental strategies
- Project/ programme management skills
- Developing reporting systems and managing environmental data to report progress
- Developing project business cards
The role will be home-based, with the expectation to attend main regional hubs either at Milton Keynes, Birmingham, or Little Venice (Paddington), for collaborative working. This is a national role, requiring collaboration with teams in all six of the Trust’s regions. There will be an expectation that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout the regional waterway network.

ABOUT THE ROLE
- Scope out, survey and review delivery and quality control during and after installation for our Urban Forest and Schools projects.
- Produce engaging, accurate and innovative plans, details and specifications for hard and soft landscape works and tree planting, using our in house style supporting and steering other designers in the team.
- Specify and design schemes for tree and woodland planting projects in estates, public parks & open spaces, and school playground spaces for food growing, education, green infrastructure and SuDS / raingardens.
- Work closely with both our in house Build Team and as a contract administrator to ensure high quality project delivery, to specification and standards required, clear handover of design materials, specifications, tender documentation, sign offs and recorded meetings.
- Support our Engagement and Marketing & Communications team with clear and effective plans and illustrations within clear handover processes and time frames.
- Work closely with our Monitoring and Evaluation team to collect and record pre agreed data accurately to support internal and external funder and partner reporting.
- Attend and chair regular internal team meetings and represent TfC at events from time to time.

THE ROLE
Responsible and accountable for evolving the Woodland Trust’s diversity and inclusion action plan to drive improvement and impact across our four pillars of success. Our major goal is to find solutions to the Triple Challenge of restoring nature, tackling climate change and feeding a growing global population all within the available resource limits of our one planet. As a member of our Science Team, you will help ensure we are viewed by the academic community and specialist bodies as a science and evidence-based organisation with conservation programmes and communications that are always informed by the latest scientific thinking.
As Chief Advisor you will lead our scientific understanding on marine issues and their impacts on the natural world and human society. You will help guide WWF-UK and WWF Network strategies on marine issues as well as help find solutions to address our Triple Challenge and reverse the decline in global biodiversity. We will look to you to provide technical support to our conservation and blue carbon work in UK coastal waters and be the lead expert on ocean systems and the drivers impacting them, including the potential for ocean tipping points. You will also act as a primary contact in your area of expertise with relevant UK government departments, specialists in the private sector, other NGOs and international policy-makers and have the ability to influence policy. You will help identify and fill knowledge gaps as well as provide the evidence underpinning WWF policy positions.
To play your part in saving our planet, you must have a track record in thought leadership on marine science and policy, coupled with a good understanding of the ocean-climate nexus and the negative drivers impacting ocean systems. You will also possess a good grasp of current science and policy debates, along with experience of providing strategic leadership to organisations and programmes. You will have sound knowledge of international policy and governance structures as they relate to the oceans including the UNFCCC, CBD and the High Seas Treaty.
Effective at influencing key political and business stakeholders and shaping policy debates, you will also have excellent communication and advocacy skills. We have a rare opportunity for an exceptional project manager to join us and work with an experienced team on the delivery of a £2m+ project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to improve access, through opportunity and conservation, to the glorious landscape of the River Eden, East Cumbria.
We seek an experienced, delivery-focused individual who can manage staff teams, external partners, finances and project schedules, and communicate effectively with a range of audiences – including at senior organisational level.
The successful candidate will also be passionate about engaging a wider range of people in the natural environment and be a clear and effective written and verbal communicator. Understanding the multi-faceted water environment and challenges to accessing it will be an advantage but the wider Access to Eden partnership team, who have closely collaborated to make this complex project a reality, will be on hand to assist.

Access to Eden:breaking barriers, building bridges aims to break down the physical, social and cultural barriers that prevent people from accessing the natural heritage of Eden and build the bridges needed to give them the confidence to enjoy our blue and green spaces. We intend to remove barriers for Eden’s special wildlife, connect habitats and promote nature recovery.
With 13 organisations signed up as part of our partnership, together we will break barriers and build bridges for people AND nature in the Eden Valley, Cumbria.
The clue is in the title. It’s all about making Eden’s rivers and nature more accessible to those who experience the greatest barriers. From opening up doorstep green spaces, promoting walking, cycling, swimming, paddle sports, practical conservation, wildlife surveys, quiet enjoyment … and even virtual enjoyment of the river environment.
Our vision is to see a fully integrated set of accessible activities and conservation opportunities that work for everyone in Eden, Cumbria, contributing to improving the natural heritage along our rivers.

An opportunity has arisen to join the central Wildlife Trade team to ensure that good practice and innovation in wildlife trade approaches are effectively integrated and implemented into projects. This is a role based in our UK Headquarters providing technical input and support to our regional programmes, with an initial focus on supporting our projects in the Caribbean and Nicaragua. These projects involve working with local partners to implement interventions based on crime prevention and behaviour change techniques and to build law enforcement capacity.
A team player also able to work on your own initiative, you will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise across teams and cultures. You will enjoy applying your critical thinking to complex issues and explaining these in plain and accessible language. You will understand the need for inclusive, collaborative and evidence-based approaches to preventing illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade including, but not limited to, effective crime prevention, community-level responses to illegal wildlife trade, building enforcement capacity and demand reduction.
