How will I be ending homelessness?

We cannot end homelessness by ourselves. To be able to help our members end their homelessness they need to be able to access local, affordable, good quality homes to rent. As a Home Search Volunteer, you will use your knowledge of your local community and your organisational and people skills to support our Housing Procurement/Landlord Liaison Teams to build local relationships with landlords and source good quality accommodation, suitable for our members to make their home. You will be someone who is up for a challenge and keen to build skills and learn more about your local housing market.

What will I be doing?

Tasks you will support the team with include:

• Researching and keeping up to date a database of local landlords and properties
• Identifying potential leads and supporting our team with follow up tasks
• Helping ensure our team knows what properties are available
• Helping with documentation and property checks such as checking for landlord certificates and the rogue landlord registry
• Talking to letting agents and landlords and building relationships with them
• Creating content for team communications
• Record keeping

Who are we looking for?

You will be great for this role if you:

• Like talking to people and are comfortable communicating and advocating for our members
• Are good at research, persistent and can be resilient when getting a 'no' from landlords. You're able to deal with negativity whilst leaving the door open in a positive manner
• Are comfortable using IT as you will need to update records, create communications, and present information
• Are organised
• Understand the importance of keeping an individual’s personal information secure and private and working within the boundaries of the role to keep everyone safe  
• Are passionate about standing with Crisis and our members to end homelessness

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care. 

As an RPR Support Volunteer you might: 

• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support

• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes 

• Raise concerns

• Keep detailed notes and records 

• Make a real difference to someone’s life 

Hospital Visitor Volunteer

Hospital Visitor volunteers visit hospital settings to ensure that people detained under the Mental Health Act are aware that they have a legal right to an IMHA qualified advocate.  The volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that clients get access to an advocate and can also support the work that advocates undertake.

This role entails weekly visits to either Townsend Court and Poplar Wards (Luton) on Fridays 1-4 or Fountains Court (Bedford) on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

As a hospital volunteer, you might: 

• hold drop-in sessions

• attend events and ward meetings at local facilities 

• share information

• assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre 

Support Session Volunteer

You’ll be supporting people over the age of 18 with disabilities, this may include those with poor mental health, learning difficulties, autism and other disabilities.  Your role will include supporting clients to understand and undertake a task on a one-to-one basis.  The task will vary from client to client as will the needs of the individual. 

As a support session volunteer, you might: 

• help people have their say when it matters most 

• Helping individuals navigate challenges and ensuring their needs are met 

• help people to make complaints and use local services 

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Join us as a Volunteer Yard Assistant at one of our four rescue and rehoming centres where rescued horses begin their journey to a brighter future – receiving the expert, compassionate care they need to heal and thrive.

As a Volunteer Yard Assistant you’ll play an important role in supporting the smooth running of our yards by helping with day to day tasks. Your contribution will allow our expert grooms to focus on rehabilitating horses and preparing them for a loving new home.

This is a physically active role where you’ll get to be part of a friendly and inclusive team, experience the satisfaction of making a real difference, and have opportunities to be involved in other charity activities, such as open days. While horse handling may be limited, the sense of purpose, teamwork, and enjoyment are unlimited!

If you’re reliable, enthusiastic and enjoy working as part of a team, we’d love to hear from you. Our centres are currently looking for volunteers to help on the following days:

• Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerton, Somerset: Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Fridays from 9am to 11am, with the option to stay on until 1pm once established.

• Penny Farm in Blackpool, Lancashire: Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 1pm or 2pm to 4.30pm.

As a mainly Telephone Befriender Volunteer, you'll work flexibly from the comfort of your own home and contact older persons to understand their service needs. Catering Volunteer role:

Preparing a hot and cold lunch for adults and children and preparing snacks and drinks for the morning and afternoon break times.  Cleaning up the kitchen at the end of the day. You will be working alongside another kitchen helper.

· We pay 40p per mile, provide food and refreshments and offer free training (Safeguarding children).  We also provide a branded t-shirt for you to wear in the kitchen.

· We ask all kitchen volunteers to commit to at least 3 days a year on either a Saturday or Sunday in the kitchen at any of our venues that suit you.

Events Volunteers are an essential part of our work for reaching and supporting different communities. Our partners in the community hold events across the UK and your support will help ensure they run smoothly, and attendees have a positive experience! You may be on your own, or as part of a team so you’ll need to be enthusiastic and motivated. 

About you 

• Aged 18 years and over 

• Reliable and good at organising your time 

• Good attention to detail 

• Friendly and polite with good communication skills 

• Self-directed and motivated 

When and where 

• Events will vary regionally and may take place during the day, evening, or weekends as a one-off or regular occurrence 

• You’ll decide where and when you’d like to volunteer - we don’t expect anyone to travel far from their home

• We're looking for volunteers in Berkshire, Somerset, and Bristol

What you will do 

Your tasks will depend on who you are supporting and what kind of event they’re running, but they will probably include: 

• Completing agreed tasks on time and responding to any changes on the day 

• Engaging with families and sharing your expertise if appropriate (either professional or lived experience) 

• Supporting with different areas, e.g. signing people in, helping with directions, sharing information 

• Identifying tasks that need doing and any issues that need reporting 

• Using your initiative to respond to situations and help out without being asked 

• Presenting the National Deaf Children’s Society and our community partners in a positive way

Support and training 

You will be provided with: 

• Basic training to help keep yourself, others, and data safe 

• A named point of contact for support 

• Reimbursement of agreed expenses such as travel costs

• Clear information about what to do and who to contact if you are worried about something
