Community Advice Works is an established community charity based in New Cross in South
East London. As the only charity in the London Borough of Lewisham offering a general
drop-in advice service, we are a critical source of support to vulnerable residents. We have
built a strong reputation within the Borough for providing high quality, independent, person-
centred welfare and housing advice. The organisation employs several part-time staff and

Key duties

• Staff and volunteer management

The role

The purpose of the role

Context of Job

AFK (Action For Kids) is a national charity helping young people with disabilities to develop their independence and find employment. Our vision is a world where all people living with a disability get to lead the life they choose.  As part of this we provide bespoke employment skills and organise work experience placements across North London.  At a national level, we provide mobility equipment not available on the NHS for disabled children and young people up to the age of 26.

Job Purpose

To support young people aged 18+ who have disabilities and/or are neurodiverse to gain employment. The role will be to primarily liaise with businesses and employers to broker new opportunities for supported and unsupported employment.  You will also work with a small caseload of young people, assessing their employability skills. You will work closely with the Employment & Skills team to place young people from the Employment Coaches caseloads into employment, as well as locate some voluntary roles and work placements. You will deliver one to one job coaching to enable young people to progress towards their own goals and objectives.

Working Conditions

The post is 35 hours a week, normally between 9.30am – 5.30pm. The post holder may be expected to work some evenings and weekends as required by the job. There is a TOIL policy. This role is peripatetic within London.

Principle Responsibilities

1. Engage with businesses and employers to source and secure employment opportunities for the young people AFK work with.
2. Encourage businesses and employers to offer volunteering, work tasters and work placements that may also lead to paid opportunities for young people.
3. Develop and maintain knowledge of the local labour market & opportunities relating to employment, work tasters, work placements and volunteering.
4. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local employer groups, statutory, voluntary and private organisations to support the development of suitable opportunities.
5. Participate in employer visits with young people to engage them in the different workplace roles to further aid their choices in employment.
6. Provide training / advice to employers as required.
7. Provide employment support for the Employment & Skills team and produce monthly updates in line with AFKs key performance indicators (KPIs).

About the role

£18,975 for 22 hours, FTE salary is £31,051

In this varied and rewarding role you will develop and coordinate our team of volunteers and Sessional Workers (zero hours youth workers).  You will be instrumental in defining our volunteer strategy moving forward and identify other participation opportunities such as work experience placements, university placements, internships and apprenticeships.

You will also help develop internal engagement activities and participate in external awareness raising and fundraising activities, to support both volunteering and fundraising.

This role is for 22 hours per week, which will ideally be worked over 4 days.   There is the option of hybrid working.   We provide a surrey wide service, so the successful applicant will be willing to travel across the county to meet volunteers and sessionals as  well as participate in engagement opportunities.

Key responsibilities

Full duties are included in the job outline, key responsibilities include:

• To coordinate the recruitment and induction process for volunteers and sessional workers.
• To coordinate, develop and deliver appropriate induction, training and supervision activities.
• To act as a central point of contact for volunteers and sessional workers
• To embed good practice in every aspect of the volunteer & sessional worker journey.
• To develop and manage partnerships with external stakeholders including Universities/volunteering hubs, local businesses and community groups to encourage a range of opportunities.
• To organise and attend community events and organise recruitment workshops and talks, across the county.
• To support the HR Manager by organising engagement activities and forums for our own staff, sessionals, volunteers and other stakeholders.
• To undertake ad hoc work for our fundraising function, to support our community fundraising efforts.
• To coordinate sessional work opportunities.

About you

You must:

• Have proven experience of recruiting and managing volunteers
• Have experience delivering information or training
• Have experience with having difficult conversations with volunteers or workers
• Have experience of working across different teams, networking and developing links with other agencies
• Be an effective communicator, with strong written communication skills
• Be able to multi-task, plan a workload, set priorities and manage time effectively, working without direct supervision
• Have a good professional knowledge of standard Microsoft packages and databases
• Ideally, have a driving license and use of own vehicle. Mileage expenses are paid.

You will have experience of working in an advisory capacity at all levels of an organisation, and of complex employee relations casework. Knowledge of current HR law and best practice are also key, as well as the ability to communicate effectively across different audiences.

Person Specification:

· Degree level qualification or equivalent experience or Level 7 Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development

· Significant relevant experience in Human Resources in a generalist role

· Experience working in the non-profit sector

· Demonstrated experience in a Healthcare environment

· Proficient use of HRIS to aid analysis of data and presentation of information

· Ability to assess risks appropriately and develop pragmatic solutions to mitigate the risk

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
