Director of Learning for Ministry

The Methodist Church in Britain is seeking a Director of Learning for Ministry (DLM) to be an advocate and a catalyst for learning for ministry throughout the Church.

The role is based within the Ministries: Vocations and Worship (MVW) team of the Connexional Team of the Methodist Church in Britain, which exists to equip the Methodist Church by training, developing and supporting those called by God to serve in lay and ordained ministry embedding the strategies which support the Church’s aspiration to be inclusive, justice seeking, evangelistic and growing.

Within the team, the DLM will be responsible for:
• working with the Head of Ministries and Learning and in collaboration with others with regards to learning and development for all forms of authorised ministry in the Church’s life
• working with the Director of Ministry Development, for overseeing the development, implementation, evaluation and review of pathways and courses for lay and ordained ministry training.
• formal relationships between the Methodist Council and Methodist-related learning institutions.
• working with the Director of Ministry Development to offer strategic leadership and support to the work of the whole MVW Team
• working with the Director of Research and Scholarship and others, to take a lead on the promotion and oversight of opportunities for higher level academic study for ministers and lay people

You will also have experience in higher education and significant experience in offering visionary and collaborative leadership, of the learning and development strategy of an organisation and strategic review of learning pathways.
An ability to reflect theologically and apply this to all aspects of the post is essential for this role.

1. Background

Chance to Shine is a national children’s charity. We change young people’s lives through cricket giving them the opportunity to play, learn and develop through the sport. We keep them physically active, teach them vital skills like teamwork, communication and leadership. And above all, they have fun.

Since 2005 our Chance to Shine Schools programme has helped reverse the decline of cricket in state schools with millions of boys and girls in over 13,000 state schools playing and learning through cricket. Chance to Shine Street supports young people in under-served communities to access and benefit from cricket in a free, inclusive, fun and fast-paced tape ball environment.

The Fundraising Team is tasked with helping Chance to Shine achieve its ambition. Securing new funding partnerships and the stewardship of existing donors across a range of funding streams: Corporate, Events, Trusts and Foundations, Individual giving, and statutory funding to support the delivery of Chance to Shine programmes.

The Head of Fundraising role will play a key part in leading the Fundraising team to success.

This is an exciting time to be joining the Fundraising team as our programmes are well established with excellent support from key stakeholders, especially ECB and Sport England. 

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and pro-active individual with a strong track record in fundraising to help drive the charity forward. The role does not require an understanding of cricket but does require an enthusiasm towards changing children and young people’s lives. The role is office based at The Kia Oval, London, however we operate flexible working and as such team members currently work from the office on average about 2 days per week. The role of Head of Fundraising will need to be flexible to attend meetings with prospective supporters and stakeholders.

2. Purpose of the role

The Head of Fundraising will report into the Director of Strategy & Fundraising and will lead the Fundraising team to successfully deliver ambitious departmental plans which will form the cornerstone of what the charity is able to achieve.

The Head of Fundraising will work closely with the Director of Strategy & Fundraising to ensure that the Fundraising department’s work is well-aligned to wider organisational strategy. This will include setting ambitious, but realistic targets with clear implementation plans.

The core function of this role will be to lead and support each strand of the fundraising team; Individual Giving, Events, Trusts & Foundations and Corporates whilst being proactive in helping to source new opportunities to enable the team to thrive.

About us: 

Established in 2021, Opportunity Green is a fast-growing not-for-profit organisation that helps to identify and unlock opportunities to tackle climate change. We build ambitious coalitions, support climate vulnerable countries in international negotiations and find innovative legal pathways to fight climate change. We are now looking for a Climate Economics & Diplomacy Senior Director to expand our work on a climate just economy.

What’s the role? 

Economics is the study of the distribution of finite resources across our planet. And yet the profession often seems to forget that resources really are finite, and that distribution must be equitable. The number one argument we hear against most climate measures is economic: what about growth? What about jobs? What’s the business case? Opportunity Green’s Senior Director will develop our narrative to ward off these questions but more fundamentally, bring economics systems change – and how to influence policymakers to incorporate this change into their thinking - to the forefront of all our work. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for any economist who believes that the climate movement needs more economic expertise and can bring ideas on how to embed the necessary change in economic thinking to climate policy. You will be OG’s first economist hire (other than the CEO) and you will have the opportunity to shape our economics strategy.

Initially you will work with our established international shipping policy team, working to ensure that the shipping sector which is historically undertaxed, begins to contribute in financial terms to climate vulnerable countries. Meanwhile, many large shipping companies have large revenue which goes to shareholders in the global north. One of your first projects could be to assess the current geographical imbalance of financial flows from the shipping industry, and work alongside our international shipping team to reimagine the economics of the shipping sector to meet our climate goals. 

A very similar argument can be made on the aviation side. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) currently only covers intra-EU flights but soon a discussion will be had on whether that should also cover international flights. Opportunity Green believes the EU ETS should cover international flights and that, very importantly, some of the ETS revenue must go to support the climate vulnerable. We are looking for someone who can support both these goals but more fundamentally, raise the profile of both sectors as potential sources of climate finance in broader international climate finance discussions.

However, we recognise that agreeing to raise revenue from aviation and shipping sectors is only the first step. The next step will be to ensure that those revenues actually reach climate vulnerable communities. The Senior Director will work with the international shipping team to expand OG’s policy on the distribution of revenues, with the explicit goal of maximising their support for climate vulnerable communities. You will follow international climate finance discussions and strategically intervene for OG when our goals can be supported. 

Initially you will report to the CEO, while the Chief Strategy and Impact Officer is on parental leave. You will manage a team of three, with one direct line report initially, who are already well established in supporting climate vulnerable countries in the International Maritime Organization.

• Economics degree or equivalent working experience 
• Experience working with policymakers to improve and drive ambition 
• Experience of generating ideas to drive economics systems change and crafting an easily understandable narrative that can be communicated to policymakers around that change 
• Ability to get to grips with technological and policy detail around aviation, shipping, buildings, steel and agriculture as necessary and to know when that detail is needed in policymaker meetings 
• Experience of leading a team and working with staff to inspire the greatest possible impact, including remote staff 
• Ability to clearly articulate a theory of change and direct a team to articulate that theory of change 
• Active listening skills, negotiation skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Reporting to: Board of Trustees

Salary:  £55,000 fulltime starting salary in a salary band rising to £70,000

Flexible working: Flexibility for working between our Milton Keynes office and home

Contract: Permanent, fulltime

As this role supervises staff who regularly work with children, it requires a criminal records check.

Main objectives of the role are to:

• help formulate and execute the agreed strategic objectives of the charity
• provide effective operational management of the charity
• maintain the financial viability and probity of the charity
• ensure high quality delivery of the charity’s services and products
• represent Potential Plus UK to key stakeholders
• attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and provide both written and oral reports.

Main responsibilities for all employees

1. To keep up to date with statutory and best practice in safeguarding and child protection procedures, ensuring that all members of the charity’s community are aware of these, understand their roles and are confident to take action as needed.
2. To liaise effectively with colleagues, parents, schools, colleges and young people to secure excellent outcomes and well-being for young people with high learning potential. 
3. To support and implement the strategic aims and all aspects of policies and procedures.
4. To develop best practice in the provision for all high potential learners, including the disadvantaged and disengaged, those with dual or multiple exceptionalities, and English as an additional language, and children from minority groups. 
5. To model high standards of professional behaviours and attitudes at all times. 
6. To identify the professional learning needed to achieve excellent outcomes, and to monitor the impact to ensure you excel in the role.

Main responsibilities for the CEO

Strategy

• To collect and maintain information and evidence that contributes to the strategic planning of the charity.
• To work with the Board of Trustees (and other staff members and advisers as appropriate) to develop the strategic objectives and the strategic plan for the charity.
• To implement and periodically review the business plan and ensure all operational activities support the strategic objectives.

Management and Administration

• To motivate and develop the team of professional staff.
• To provide a structure of line management and support for all staff.
• To recruit and terminate staff in line with the charity’s policies and values.
• To oversee the work of contracted companies and individuals with the support of the Deputy CEO.
• To provide and promote structures for volunteers to support high learning potential.

Financial Management

• To manage the charity’s financial resources effectively, in line with the agreed annual budget.
• To maintain the charity’s compliance with financial bodies such as HMRC.
• To implement a robust income-generation strategy as agreed with the Board of Trustees
• To oversee the fundraising activities being implemented for the charity.
• To actively promote and ensure financial support for disadvantaged families to enable access to the charity’s services.

Quality of Services and Products

• To implement and oversee the development of high-quality services and products that are appropriate for the charity’s beneficiaries.
• To promote best practice and consistency of high quality in the delivery of all services and products.
• To ensure the charity keeps up-to-date with developments in education and wellbeing policy and practice and applies them to its own understanding and work.

Marketing and Advocacy

• To implement a coordinated marketing and social media strategy to increase awareness of high learning potential and the educational and wellbeing needs of the charity’s beneficiaries.
• To develop and promote understanding of high learning potential with a strong evidence base.
• To work collaboratively with other stakeholders to advocate for the rights and needs of young people with high learning potential.
• To be the prime contact with the media and be an advocate for the charity.

Governance

• To be accountable for the efficient, operational running of the charity.
• To ensure the charity’s compliance with legal requirements such as Companies House returns, GDPR, etc.
• To understand and adhere to the charity’s governance documents.
• To provide written and oral reports to the Board of Trustees at regular meetings.
• To respond to requests for information by the Board of Trustees in a timely fashion
• To support Trustees to maintain and regularly review the policies of the charity and to create and implement the accompanying operational procedures.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the charity through qualitative and quantitative key performance indicators.
• To be responsible for the appraisal of staff performance and identification of any needs for professional learning and development.

Safeguarding

• To act as Senior Designated Safeguarding Lead for the charity.
• To coordinate with the Trustee with Responsibility for Safeguarding and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads as appropriate to ensure best practice in safeguarding throughout the organisation.
• To regularly interact with children and young people in support of the charity's strategic objectives

Any Other Duties

• To lead by example and be part of a dedicated team to implement the strategic objectives of the charity.
• To carry out any other reasonable duties as identified as part of the job.
