We are excited to be advertising the role of Psychotherapy Service Manager at Respond, to lead our team and the development of our psychotherapy services with autistic people and people with learning disabilities who have experienced trauma and their families. Many of our clients may have experienced complex or multiple traumatic experiences including sexual violence, domestic abuse and neglect.
The Psychotherapy Service provides predominantly longer-term therapeutic support of a year or more, depending on how the work is funded, to an average of 130 unique individuals per year. The current team of 10 are made up of 4 senior therapists (reporting to the postholder), 4 therapists and 2 honoraries in training, the majority of whom are Arts therapists and work within a psychodynamic and/or systemic model.
We welcome applications from experienced Psychodynamic Counsellor/Psychotherapists, Arts therapists, Psychologists or Family Therapists who are passionate about our work. You will work psychodynamically, champion our trauma informed approach including our reflective practice model and have the opportunity to influence and shape the development of the psychotherapy service. Leading the small team, you will provide clinical leadership and be Safeguarding lead, ensuring we continue to provide high quality psychotherapy services. We are offering the role at 4-5 days per week, working in a hybrid manner flexibly. You can also hold your own small case load of clients, supervisees and/or consultancy work within the role.
This is a unique and specialist role and we recognise that you may have more experience in one clinical area or client group than another, given the breadth of our work and whilst you may be experienced in working psychodynamically as a therapist and as a line manager, you may be newer to leading a service for example. Or you may have a great deal of other experience and understanding of the needs of our clients from other work. If this sounds like the kind of role that would interest you, we’d really welcome your application. Please also get in touch if you have any questions.
Further information about Respond
Respond is entering the last year of our three-year strategy, in which we will continue to be focusing on our psychotherapy service, which is a core part of Respond’s offer as a charity for now thirty-four years. Our mission is to reduce the impact of trauma in the lives of people with learning disabilities and autistic people, by developing trusting relationships, through psychotherapeutically informed services which include advocacy, training and consultation.
An important part of our work at Respond is working in a trauma-informed way. What this means for us is that we hold in mind the impact of trauma at all levels of the organisation, and all staff take part in reflective practice or team dynamics.
We provide a range of trauma-informed services for children, young people, adults and professionals. These include psychotherapy, advocacy, training and other support services. The work we do is generally long term in recognition of research that clients with autism and learning disabilities who have experienced abuse and trauma take longer to process their trauma and to recover.
We are keen to encourage applications from a diverse range of candidates including people with lived experience, who are both interested in working in partnership to provide support, as well as supporting people with learning disabilities and autistic people who have experienced trauma.
We are committed to the furthering of human rights, equality, and positive social change through our therapeutic and advocacy work and are committed to anti-racism and other forms of anti-discriminatory practice. We recognise that we need to continually keep this as a focus in our work and as an integral part of our organisational strategy.
We celebrate diversity as an employer and as a provider of services to people who often experience multiple discriminations because of (but not limited to) being autistic or having a learning disability and experiences of trauma.
We are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every requirement in the person specification, we encourage you to apply anyway and demonstrate how your experience is transferrable for this role. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles within the organisation.

Who we are
The problem - On average, 160 young people are excluded from school each week. Once excluded, prospects for these young people are bleak, with only 4% achieving good GCSE grades, and 67% entering sustained education, employment or training compared to 96% of their non-excluded peers. This can be a pipeline to prison, with concerning statistics showing 63% of prisoners having been excluded from school.
Our mission - To ensure that young people who have been excluded from school are not excluded from society.

Young people with special educational needs are also six times as likely to be excluded as their peers.
Our work - We work in a number of different settings both during term time and after school. Our coaches lead small groups of 8-10 young people, using sport as a hook and mentorship as an anchor to develop their soft skills, as well as improve their physical & mental wellbeing. This, coupled with exposure to the work place through Career Taster Days, raises their aspirations and puts young people in a better position to enter sustained education, employment or training (EET) when they leave school.

Supporting young people, using the power of rugby.
Who we are
The problem - On average, 160 young people are excluded from school each week.
Who we serve - We support the hardest to reach young people in the most disadvantaged communities, each of whom are most at risk of experiencing school exclusion or are at risk of being excluded. Young people who are eligible for free school meals are 4x more likely to get excluded, along with black Caribbean boys.

We’re an award-winning charity that runs local learning centres in the heart of communities where the young people
we support live. Our centres provide an innovative education programme which includes practical learning support and
motivational and confidence-building activities for children and young people aged 7-18. Our aim is to inspire students from
the least advantaged neighbourhoods to broaden their horizons and achieve their full potential.
As the UK’s leading university access organisation, our staff team is helping thousands of young people each year. We have forty-one centres and extension projects across England and Scotland, with ambitious plans to scale-up our
provision further over the coming years.
We are looking for a high-calibre candidate to take up a fixed-term role of Adult and Family Learning Manager, working across our centres in Govan and Maryhill (Glasgow) and Craigmillar (Edinburgh).
This is a new and exciting role at the charity, focussing on how we can offer additional impactful support in the local
communities in which our Scotland centres are based. The post holder will work in close collaboration with colleagues at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The pilot will focus on supporting the parents, carers and families of young people accessing the centres, with the potential for this to extend to wider adults in the community. You will lead the pilot project, developing a programme tailored according to and with an understanding of the different communities in which it will be offered. You will lead on programme delivery and evaluating the impact of the project.
Working with colleagues based at the three centres, you will provide a range of activities which will support parents and carers to support their children in their learning, develop their own skills and knowledge around employment and education, and provide a range of family learning activities to engage the whole family together.
As a charity with social mobility as its core objective, IntoUniversity is wholly committed to equality of opportunity. We work with families, children and young people from a diverse range of backgrounds, and we believe that our staff team should be similarly diverse and representative.
The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be, and we recognise that we have much more to do in this regard. We are committed to building a culture where students, staff and volunteers are valued for the unique people
they are. We therefore encourage applications from candidates from as wide a range as possible of ethnic, cultural and social backgrounds. In particular, we actively and warmly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic
candidates, male candidates and candidates with a disability as they are currently under-represented within IntoUniversity.
If you believe that all young people deserve the chance to develop their talents regardless of their background and want to play a part in helping them succeed, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
