British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the UK’s leading heart and cardiovascular health charity in the UK and its biggest independent funder of cardiovascular research.

With cardiovascular disease now the leading cause of preventable premature death in the UK, and the biggest driver of the growing health gap between rich and poor, influencing the Government and Civil Service to prioritise it is crucial to the recovery of the UK’s economic and population health.

We are looking for an energetic and driven new Head of Public Affairs to work in the CEO office on three key areas of Government influencing: better prevention, better treatment and care, and boosting scientific understanding of diseases of the heart. 

As an experienced influencer and campaigner, you will co-lead, with BHF’s Head of Policy, a policy and public affairs team of 12 people to devise impactful influencing campaigns and strategies aimed at Westminster and relevant Whitehall departments. You will also help build partnerships with industry, think tanks, others in the voluntary sector and arms-length bodies, to advocate for a newly coherent and determined approach to heart disease. 

Working arrangements

This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and our London office.

About you

You’ll have a deep commitment to improving the lives and chances of the 7.6 million people in the UK living with a heart condition. You will also be highly motivated to close the growing gap in health outcomes between rich and poor, and different ethnicities, that heart diseases are driving. 

With a good understanding of how to mobilise the public behind this cause, through creative and impactful campaigns and a highly professional and targeted approach to influencing senior decision-makers, you’ll bring thorough knowledge of the political system, and deep insight into how problems rise the political agenda and become policy.

A qualification in a field such as politics or public/social policy would be desirable but not essential where there is significant experience. You’ll have excellent knowledge of Westminster and the political system in England, as well as good working knowledge of devolved nations equivalents.

Enthusiastic and with an in-depth understanding of current affairs, you’ll have a good understanding of the UK medical research sector. You will also have significant experience of working in a political environment or in public affairs.

About this team:
Under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer, the Finance, IT, Governance and Risk, Efficiency and Sustainability, Facilities and Legal teams provide professional business advice and central support to Dogs Trust. In this role, you’ll be responsible for day-to-day management of our CRM system (Raiser’s Edge – NXT) ensuring all information on our database is accurate and up to date. The postholder will lead and implement our support journey strategies ensuring these can be run as smoothly as possible.

The fundraising team at Haven House is relatively small and you’ll be working across the department to ensure that we can maximise our data from our supporters as well as identifying new data needed to better our fundraising programmes. This is an exciting role that would suit a highly motivated individual looking to make an impact, helping Haven House to succeed in data-led fundraising and achieve ambitious targets.

You will need:

• Experience of CRM/database management within a fast-paced fundraising/ sales/customer-facing environment

Our Welfare Officers provide direct and impactful welfare support to RAF personnel and their immediate family. As a trusted and confidential source of support, you will assist our service users with challenges they are facing, from mental ill-health, difficult relationships, domestic abuse, financial and cost-of-living concerns, resettlement, housing, childcare, equality issues, bereavement, military discharge or deployment and many more - no day will be the same, as such this is a great opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills within the Welfare sector.

Our intervention is provided with consent on a non-statutory basis, and you will work with and engage our service users to develop appropriate interventions for individual outcomes.

Main Responsibilities:

 · To process residents rent and payments received on the housing management system (Pyramid) in order to achieve rent collection and arrears targets.

· Ensure all housing debts are pursued with the resident and local authorities ensuring all actions are recorded and payment plans are agreed with the resident.

· Effectively implement the rent arrears procedure to ensure warnings and eviction notices are served in a timely manner and in accordance with legal procedures

· Pass to Finance colleagues all requests for relevant council tax payments from local authorities

· Ensure receipts from Surrey County Council are correctly allocated between rent accounts and any support element is recorded as Housing Support based on bank payments sent by the Finance team to the housing team. Provide Finance with this information so they can enter onto finance system

· Input bank credits to match bank receipts from finance and posting onto Pyramid (housing management system).

· Work closely with the Head of Finance and support them with the month end reconciliation of receipts and arrears balance

· Lead on Discretionary Housing Payments requests, benefit issues and enquiries with the local authorities

· Maintain accurate rent accounts on the Pyramid housing management system ensuring information is recorded accurately.

· Work closely with the Housing Team and Finance Team on rent and support income management developing good working relations with them.

· Represent the organization in court possessions and evictions where necessary.

· Run monthly rent reports as directed by Head of Housing and Head of Finance

· Work closely with the Finance Officer (income) in relation to any queries about rent charged and payments received.

· Provide cover for the Finance Officer (income) where needed (after training)

· Maintain and submission of pre-card card processes

· Meet with the Head of Finance, Head of Housing and Finance Officer (income) to review housing arrears monthly.

· Ensure processes are followed and systems are updated to support the Key Housing Performance Indicator targets.

· Contribute and represent the organisation in a positive manner in team/management meetings both internally and externally.

Responsibilities:

• Assisting clients when they enter the programme and proceed with their therapy or recuperation.
• Offering screening, evaluation, planning for recovery, and subsequent referral
• Minimising the harm that drugs and alcohol do to clients and the larger community
• Encouraging carer, client, and community participation
• Acting as an advocate for partnership service access
• Assisting service users with their social (re)integration so they can live meaningful lives by encouraging self-determination, resilience, recovery, and peer support.
• Conduct research, create, and prepare materials and topic matter for groups or pods.
• Provide service users in group settings with structured information at different phases of their recovery
• Following groups or pods, analyse progress and identify service user concerns by participating in debriefings and evaluations with co-facilitators.
• Design seminars that are specifically tailored to the needs of the service users, covering topics like relationships, anger management, and sleep issues.

Experience Required:

• Possess a thorough awareness of substance abuse issues or have previous experience working in a related field.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication abilities as well as strong IT abilities.
• Possess a solid working understanding of mental health services, interventions, and best practices.
• Have excellent interpersonal skills, be a helpful team player, and be able to collaborate with a variety of individuals, organisations, and internal and external stakeholders.
• Capacity to successfully manage change while putting the interests of service consumers first
• Recognise the significance of information governance procedures and pledge to adhere to and implement all required safety measures
• Seek out learning opportunities to improve and broaden your professional knowledge and skills and to contribute and oversee the learning and development of others

Spitalfields City Farm is the nearest city farm to the City of London’s square mile. Established in 1978 and located in one of the most densely populated wards of Tower Hamlets, and in an area of London that struggles with poverty and issues of inequality, the charity works with a vibrant and multi-cultural community to provide educational opportunities for children and adults, empower people to gain new skills, confidence, to combat social isolation.

At a time of great challenge with food poverty and the cost-of-living crisis, this small ambitious charity accomplishes a lot for the local community. As part of their 2022-2025 strategy, their vision is to create a space for all, that empowers people to make a positive change to their lives, the local community and the planet, through education, community and wellbeing initiatives.

Volunteering plays a crucial, central role on the farm. The Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager will enhance and expand the volunteer programme, provide pastoral support to volunteers, lead farm based outdoor workshop to meet volunteer expectations, aid volunteer learning and develop outdoor skills and develop strong community partnerships. The role is funded by The Lottery – Reaching Communities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Leadership & Coordination: You will develop, implement, and evaluate the volunteer programme, creating diverse volunteering opportunities, and manage programme policies, procedures and budgets.
• Volunteer Recruitment, Training, and Support: As the main point of contact for volunteers, you will recruit volunteers with the right skills, coordinate and deliver volunteer training, support volunteers to achieve their goals, and organise knowledge-sharing and social sessions for volunteers.
• Consultation, Partnerships, and Networking: You will research best practices in volunteer management, develop and manage partnerships with external stakeholders, maintain links with local community groups and businesses for volunteer recruitment, and raise the profile of Spitalfields City Farm’s volunteer programmes.
• Monitoring and Evaluation: You will maintain volunteer records and evaluation systems, provide data and reports for internal and external use, and collaborate with an external organisation for independent programme evaluation.

The Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager will understand the current trends and resources required to manage a volunteer programme with demonstrable experience in developing and managing volunteer projects. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be an all-round people person, with empathy and an understanding of volunteer needs. You will be able to naturally inspire and motivate others and be able to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders. You will have strong organisational skills, some budget management experience and good administrative and IT skills. The ability to speak another language, such as Bengali, would be beneficial. As part of the role, you will need to plan and deliver basic gardening and outdoor skills sessions

The role is based at Spitalfields City Farm. You must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions. The role is full time, and you will need to work either Saturday or Sunday as part of your work pattern and 4-days during the week, Monday-Friday.
