This is an exciting time to join the Medical Research Foundation, as we prepare to launch our new five-year strategy. We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Manager who can manage research funding competitions to ensure that only the very best research and very best researchers receive our support.

The Foundation’s mission is to drive the life-changing advances of tomorrow, by laying the foundations for ground-breaking new discoveries today. We know that many health conditions are overlooked and underfunded, that new health threats will continue to arise, and that there will always be a need for high-quality, high impact medical research.

Reporting to our Senior Research Manager, you will help us deliver our Research Strategy by planning, co-ordinating and delivering bespoke funding competitions in areas of high need, such as the Impact of Climate Change on Health, or Mental Health. You will also be responsible for managing awarded grants. Your main responsibilities will be to:

• Plan, co-ordinate and deliver bespoke funding competitions.
• Convene grant funding committees and prepare review guidance.
• Oversee peer review and safeguard standards: manage conflicts of interest, minute the meetings, coordinate actions and draft feedback to applicants.
• Keep abreast of developments in best practice of research management and grant funding, and introduce improvements to processes.
• Horizon scan and carry out scoping exercises in research areas of interest to the Foundation.
• Assist in development and preparation of papers, reports, briefings and documents.
• Oversee the development and delivery of scientific workshops of invited experts to develop research funding priority areas and/or support funding calls.
• Line manage one Grants Officer and have responsibility for their day-to-day work.

Who you are

You may be a Research or Grants Manager, or an experienced Research or Grants Officer looking for the next step in their career.  Or, you may have a biomedical research background, with other experience of funding competitions. You will be educated in life sciences to degree level or equivalent experience, and you may have a Masters or a PhD in a relevant discipline.

We will offer you

You will help us deliver our Research Strategy by developing the smooth and efficient operation of our grant making processes, ensuring our research funding competitions and management of our grants portfolio are delivered to the highest standard and that our grant making processes are best practice.

 Your main responsibilities will be to:

• Develop our grants management systems and processes, identifying best practice and implementing changes where necessary
• Become the expert on our grants management software system and use of grants management analysis tools, providing updates on grants management data
• Change funding processes to ensure greater environmental sustainability of the research we fund
• Ensure our grant terms and conditions and policies are fit for purpose
• Engage with the wider research funding sector to identify best practices in areas of importance to us, such as peer review, research integrity, research culture and equity, diversity and inclusion
• Be the key point of contact with our Finance and Governance teams, and improve business processes between the teams
• Keep abreast of developments in best practice of research management and grant funding, and introduce improvements to processes.
• Monitor our use of data to ensure compliancy with all policies
• Work with Research Managers and Grants Officers to design bespoke funding competitions and standardise processes across all funding competitions
• Manage some standing Research Committees; for example, Research Organisation Due Diligence
• Assist in development and preparation of proposals, papers, reports, briefings and documents
• Engage with external stakeholders as a representative for the Foundation when necessary
• Manage and be involved in relevant project work
• Matrix management of a Grants Officer.

The Health Foundation is an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK.

We want national policies on health and social care to be informed by better evidence and analysis. The policy team supports this by analysing, understanding, and informing national policies on health, social care and public health in the UK, with a particular focus on the overall direction and performance of the health system in England.Our work ranges from understanding integrated care systems in the NHS, how to improve access to primary care, and strategies to improve public health and prevention. We also assess the overall performance of the health system (for example, through public polling and international comparisons).

The policy officer will work on a mix of projects, supporting in-house policy analysis and research, as well as helping to scope and develop ideas for externally commissioned research. The role will include supporting our programme of public polling. The policy officer will support policy analyses, including synthesising qualitative and quantitative research evidence; analysing policy documents and grey literature; and supporting policy research.

The policy officer will help write and contribute to external publications, including briefings, blogs, and longer Health Foundation reports. Everybody in the policy team contributes to our written work—so the ability to write with clarity about complex issues is essential.

The policy team works closely with other teams in the Health Foundation—for example, with those carrying out more in-depth quantitative analysis—on projects and to exchange ideas. The policy officer will therefore work collaboratively, engaging with colleagues to make best use of the Health Foundation’s skills and assets to produce effective policy analysis.

The policy officer will also play an important role in supporting our response to new policy developments and government announcements and helping to inform our media statements. They will also play a role in scanning policy developments and identifying areas for responsive work.

This role will help drive forward the delivery of the Trussell Trust’s policy research strategy, developing and contributing to critical pieces of research that help progress our vision of ending the need for food banks. 

The Senior Policy Researcher will be responsible for developing and delivering insightful and timely qualitative, quantitative and participatory policy research. As well as producing and scrutinising high-quality mixed-methods research, they will work closely with colleagues to ensure that this is accessible for a range of audiences in order that it can best meet the organisation’s policy influencing goals. 

Role responsibilities 

• Coordinate, design, and deliver research projects and ad hoc analysis on policy areas which contribute to our strategic goal of ending the need for food banks, including (but not limited to) Universal Credit, disability benefits, mental health, in-work poverty and debt 

• Manage commissioned research projects, including codesigning data collection tools, monitoring budgets, quality assurance and strong project management 

• Embed equality, diversity and inclusion principles in internal and commissioned research project design, prioritising participatory methods that support the voice of lived experience 

• Advise and support Policy Research Officers and Network Policy & Research Officers in supporting the food bank network to understand and use our research, but also to deliver their own, where appropriate 

• Help internal and external stakeholders make best use of the Trussell Trust’s data and policy research, including quality assurance of outputs, and compelling written and oral communication of our research findings 

• Liaise – as required – with other data and research-related colleagues to develop and deliver analytical projects, and share knowledge 

• Support key colleagues to plan and deliver the Trussell Trust’s wider influencing strategy, including colleagues in the Policy and Research department and beyond 

Person Specification 

Technical skills and minimum knowledge: 

• Track record of delivering social research and data analysis to support policy development or campaigns activity 

• Understanding of quantitative and qualitative social research principles and analysis methods 

• Advanced writing skills, understanding writing with impact and producing concise outputs for a range of audiences 

• Confidence and ability in explaining and presenting complex research findings and methodology to non-expert audiences

EVAW’s policy manager plays a critical role in delivering EVAW’s work, including developing policy proposals and positions across a broad range of areas related to violence against women and girls, to inform and support our campaigning aims. Working independently, the post-holder will support our evidence-based campaigning, generate and contribute to critical policy discussions, and support the organisation’s broad lobbying and influencing strategies.

Key tasks include staying up to date with the VAWG policy landscape, producing briefings and reports, identifying key and emerging policy areas, collecting relevant evidence, and building EVAW’s responses to inform our campaigns – often through engagement with members and stakeholders.

Respect is a pioneering UK membership organisation in the domestic abuse sector. We lead on the development of safe, effective work with perpetrators, male victims, and young people using violence in their close relationships.As the Policy, Public Affairs and Communications Manager for the Drive Partnership, you will lead our efforts to ensure that those with the ability to make change, because of the funding or policy making role they hold, understand the aims and vision of the Drive Partnership and what our data, practice expertise and the voice of survivors is telling us about how to stop domestic abuse in the UK. In this role, offered a permanent post subject to funding, you will lead a team of two staff, develop our policy influencing capacity and support our national rollout of ground-breaking interventions to stop domestic abuse. The Research and Communications and Events Lead is a key post in the Research Management and Impact Team at Marie Curie with the purpose of disseminating the outputs, outcomes and impact of Marie Curie funded research as widely as possible to a multitude of internal and external audiences. This includes taking the operational and communication lead on organising our annual Marie Curie Research into Practice Conference which has increasing international reach. This is an essential event in the Marie Curie research calendar, online, free and open to all, with the aim of communicating new research and evidence in palliative and end of life care to practitioners, policy makers and researchers in the field.

The post holder will communicate extensively with internal teams, such as policy, communications, fundraising and caring services and build and maintain excellent relationships with external stakeholders, such as funder researchers and partner organisations, to maximise the visibility and impact of Marie Curie funded research.

Key responsibilities  

It is a hugely exciting time to be working in the online safety field. New regulation created by the Online Safety Act is set to significantly increase companies’ duties to keep users safe, especially children. At the same time, the online issues which families are contending with continue to evolve at pace: from mis- and dis-information in the age of generative AI, to increasing volumes of misogynistic online abuse, and data and privacy risks to name just a few.

There is cross-party consensus on the importance of tackling these issues, and a real appetite for practical, evidence-led solutions.

Against this backdrop, and ahead of a new government, Internet Matters is recruiting a Policy Manager to help ensure that our voice is heard in these conversations, advocating for the interests of children and families to be put first. This wide-ranging role will include:

• Delivering policy projects on particular issues or themes (e.g. reports, briefings, roundtable events) – and supporting projects from other teams which have policy components. The successful candidate will author external-facing outputs, with support from the wider team.

• Stakeholder engagement, public affairs and influencing – maintaining and developing a network of contacts across Government, Parliament, regulators, the third sector and industry. Identifying opportunities to push forward our agenda with key decision-makers, including through active participation in meetings and events.

• Reactive policy work – e.g. monitoring the policy landscape, writing blogs, producing briefings, responding to consultations. 

• Supporting the successful running of our Expert Advisory Panel and Vulnerable Users Working Group, e.g. though producing minutes of discussions, diarising meetings, sourcing speakers, compiling agendas, etc. 

• Contributing your ideas to team discussions about the overarching strategy for our policy and research work.

About you 

The successful candidate will have professional experience of working in policy, public affairs, or a closely related field. Knowledge of online safety/tech policy would be beneficial, but is not a requirement.

You may have worked for another charity/not-for-profit, a trade association, in government or in Parliament. You are excited by the opportunities of working in a small organisation, where everyone lends a hand to deliver key priorities, and where you can contribute very actively to our wider thinking and strategy.

Sometimes your work may focus on one or two of the key responsibilities listed above more than the others, in line with organisational need and external developments. We are therefore looking for someone who is comfortable with embracing all aspects of the job, with support, even though you may well have a preference for (or greater experience in) certain aspects of it. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who have experience of public affairs and influencing work, given that external outreach is likely to be a significant focus for us in the year ahead, but please do still apply if your experience lies more elsewhere (e.g. writing reports).

Harris Hill are delighted to be working with a disability charity to recruit a newly created Evidence and Policy Manager position. This brand new role within the Innovation Team, will use an existing evidence base to develop robust policy positions which will enable greater accessibility to a range of future transport modes and technologies.

The aim of this charity is to improve transport accessibility for people with disabilities now and in the future. Their policy work will be rooted in structured research, drawing out themes across transport modes and disability types to tell a clear story about what changes would make the biggest difference to disabled people.

In this role you will work to proactively identify opportunities to influence emerging from a portfolio of innovation projects. You will lead on the charity’s responses to high-profile Government consultations, and where there is alignment you may engage with external partners for mutual benefit. You will develop and implement a specific research programme geared towards supporting us to develop robust policy positions.

Key responsibilities will include;

• Commissioning research specifically geared towards supporting development of robust policy positions.
• Using insights to develop a structured evidence bank and developing policy-relevant themes across key areas.
• Engaging with key external stakeholders in disability and transport to understand the policy positions of other organisations and share back our own.
• Proactively identifying opportunities to influence policy where it may have a positive impact for disabled people.
• Leading on responding to consultations, working closely with the Innovation and Communications Teams, and with external partners and allies where appropriate

The ideal candidate will have;

• Experience commissioning robust qualitative and quantitative research.
• Experience using research findings and evidence to develop robust policy positions and respond to high-profile Government consultations.
• Experience proactively identifying opportunities to influence.
• Ability to facilitate sensitive internal conversations to reach a point of consensus on policy positions.
• Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders in Government, industry, and other charities and foundations.

Summary of role 

The Policy Manager is a key role in supporting the development and implementation of WeProtect Global Alliance’s strategy and vision for a digital world designed to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse.

We require a highly skilled and motivated individual with a strong track record of carrying out policy research and analysis, who can build relationships with external stakeholders, provide technical support to governments, and is able to work in dynamic, global policy environments.

You will be responsible for monitoring policy and political developments, promoting evidence-based policies, and building and maintaining relationships with government, civil society and private sectors to foster change. You will have a sound understanding of how policy decisions are influenced and made. You will also lead on the development of policy outputs including briefings, papers and reports, working with colleagues to build evidence and articulate the Alliance’s work across our membership and with other stakeholders.

The successful candidate will demonstrate considerable professional experience in a comparable policy-focused role and will have a diverse skill set, encompassing critical policy analysis, effective communication of complex policy concepts to diverse audiences and strong project management skills. You will also have a demonstrable understanding of children’s rights and related public policy developments globally.

Policy Manager role and responsibilities 

Overall purpose of role 

WeProtect Global Alliance supports our members to achieve more together than they could alone, through pooling and sharing knowledge and data, solving problems and making a powerful case for change.

The Policy Manager role is pivotal to making a compelling case for action and bringing together experts to generate political commitment, develop policies and practical solutions to make the digital world safe and positive for children, preventing sexual exploitation and abuse and long-term harm. The role will support the vital work of our Global Taskforce, comprised of government members from across the globe. It will require close collaboration with the Communications and Engagement team and other members of the Alliance Secretariat.

Legislative, regulatory and policy work

• Lead on a range of policy projects on key emerging threats and responses to child sexual exploitation and abuse online.
• Analyse national legislation, policies, multilateral initiatives and regulatory approaches to identify trends, best practices, and opportunities for collaboration and policy learning.
• Prepare policy reports, briefs, and proposals, tailored to various audiences, including policymakers, stakeholders, and members, working alongside the Communications and Engagement team.
• Monitor the implementation and impact of policies, regulations, and legislative proposals regarding child sexual exploitation and abuse, including potential challenges in implementing and enforcing regulatory measures.
• Develop and evaluate policy options and recommendations based on evidence, best practice, and stakeholder input, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and member priorities.
• Support the drafting of responses to consultations, policy briefings, and other public policy initiatives, including relevant third-party publications.
• Promote, support and embed the use of the Alliance’s Model National Response with Government members including supporting the use of national legal and policy frameworks in accordance with the UNCRC and other regional and international and regional standards.
• Develop and maintain a good understanding of key legislative, policy and political developments in relation to child sexual exploitation and abuse online.

Global Taskforce

Support the focus and outcomes delivered by the Alliance’s Global Taskforce:

• Encourage and facilitate effective sharing of information among Taskforce member countries.
• Actively highlight valuable and impact resources available to governments.
• Support Taskforce member countries in identifying opportunities, actions and strategic steps within their national frameworks to enhance the protection of children.
• Organise bi-annual reporting and coordinating special events to foster leadership development for government officials involved in the Taskforce’s work.
• Maintain an up-to-date list of key contacts in Taskforce member countries.

Wider stakeholder engagement

• Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, partners, and collaborators relevant to our work across the Alliance membership.
• Lead on development of or contribute to written outputs, such as reports, topic-specific briefing papers, website copy, presentations and blog posts to communicate the findings of our work to relevant audiences.
• Present analysis, evidence and findings about complex and sometimes contentious subjects to a wide range of audiences, ensuring an understanding of the subject and issues arising and enabling informed decision making.
• Represent the Alliance at key meetings as required, including presenting at and supporting the delivery of presentations at international events.
