We’re looking for an experienced fundraiser and team leader to join us as Head of Development (maternity cover). You will lead a talented team of seven which cover Fundraising (Memberships, Legacies, Grants, Trusts and Foundations and Philanthropy) and Marketing (Communications, Campaigns & Marketing).
A particular focus of this 12-month contract will be developing the fundraising strategy for a (£5-6m) capital campaign for the transformation of Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s Grade II and II* buildings, at the heart of Shrewsbury.
The job is full-time, but for the right candidate we would be willing to discuss part-time working with some external support on key areas.

The Opportunity
The Finance and Operations Manager will provide financial expertise and support the Head of Finance & Operations (HFO) to deliver high quality financial management in budgeting, forecasting, and monthly reporting.
The role will also support the HFO in the organisation's operations functions, ensuring that legal and operational governance is delivered on time and to a high standard, that SMF is is compliant in Health & Safety (H&S), General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), insurance and other operational matters. The role holder will provide support leadership on the organisation's IT function and deliver training to all teams in matters concerning finance and operations.
Location: We operate a hybrid model of work i.e. a combination of in-person and remote, with flexible days in the office depending on business need and your preferences. We would typically expect in-office attendance an average of one day per week.
When in the office you will be based in one of our regional offices (either Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester or Newcastle – depending on preference and accessibility). This is where you will usually attend in-person events, training sessions etc. though some travel, to other offices and other locations, will occasionally be expected.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Finance:
- Oversee the day-to-day financial management and cash flow of the Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) working closely with the HFO, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Operations team.
- Ensure that our accounting software is consistently up to date with the correct information.
- Work with the HFO on management information to enable the SMT and trustees to monitor progress and performance, make effective decisions and plan for the future.
- Financial information to support income development including budgets, income tracking and analysis and funder reports.
- Support the development of the annual organisational budget with the HFO, in liaison with the CEO and management team and provide support in developing departmental / project budgets as relevant.
- Manage how the organisation applies and reports on VAT.
- Alongside our appointed accountants prepare Year End accounts, end of project accounts, and work with the appointed accountants to ensure the Accounts are completed, approved, and filed on time.
- Manage and improve our financial systems and procedures, streamlining internal processes to ensure they are effective and safeguard the finances of the organisation.
- Devise and implement effective and efficient procedures, including the introduction of a purchase order system and a new ethical procurement policy.
- Maintain the payroll function of the organisation and be the lead point of contact with our external payroll provider.
- Conduct reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities.
2. Operations:
- Support the Data Protection Officer (the HFO) for the organisation, in liaising with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) appropriately, ensure that all staff and volunteers are aware of and trained in the relevant Data Protection policy and procedures, and ensure that the organisation meets its Data Protection requirements.
- Support the HFO in overseeing operational matters such as insurance, H&S, buildings maintenance and asset register; work closely with the management team to ensure awareness, compliance, and procedures that are effective and efficient for staff and volunteers. Where appropriate, escalate concerns and issues to HFO.
3. Strategic Responsibilities:
- Work closely with management and trustees to provide and develop financial and operational expertise; contribute appropriately to the development and management of organisational strategies, service proposals and development of the organisation.
- Lead on the appropriate understanding and training at each level of the organisation on how operational and financial systems work and support their role.
- Ensure that financial and operational policies and procedures meet the highest standards, reflect the charity’s ethos effectively and support the organisation’s strategic development; champion inclusivity (including Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)) and sustainability (in the widest sense).

Together We Learn is a charity registered in England and Wales, working in close partnership with Together We Learn Ethiopia, a registered NGO in Ethiopia. Operating as two distinct legal entities, the organisations work as sister charities with a shared mission and vision: to enable disadvantaged children to access high-quality education.
While Together We Learn in the UK leads fundraising, governance and international engagement, Together We Learn Ethiopia is responsible for implementing and delivering programmes on the ground.

The Role
As CEO, you will lead the UK team of Together We Learn and work in close partnership with the Ethiopian team, providing guidance and support to enable them to deliver programmes to a high standard. You will provide overall leadership for the charity, with responsibility for fundraising and stakeholder engagement, oversight of programmes, and management of finance and operations.
The annual turnover of Together We Learn is £350,000, and you will be responsible for line managing two staff in the UK and occasional interns, as well as supporting our Ethiopian partner, who has 15 programme and 8 support staff working across two regional offices: Gondar in the Amhara region and Addis Ababa in the Oromia region. The charity is managed by an experienced board of 5 trustees who meet quarterly and provide ad hoc support in their professional areas of expertise.
The charity is in a stable position with funds secured for the current year and a fundraising plan in place for the year ahead. ABOUT THE ROLE
Crann is now seeking to appoint a Head of Fundraising, a senior leadership role responsible for developing and leading a sustainable fundraising function to support the organisation’s mission and future growth. This is a newly created role and represents a shift from organically grown, CEO-led fundraising to a more structured and strategic approach that supports scale, complexity and long-term financial sustainability.
Reporting to the CEO and sitting on the Senior Management Team, the Head of Fundraising will be responsible for setting fundraising strategy, translating it into clear operational plans, and ensuring the systems, structures and ways of working are in place to deliver consistent and diversified income. The role will involve leading and developing a small fundraising team, strengthening capability, clarity and accountability across the function.
In addition to building the fundraising function, the Head of Fundraising will personally manage a portfolio of key donor relationships and income streams, working directly with funders, donors, partners and stakeholders. The role will also contribute to the organisation’s longer-term ambitions, including preparing for future capital fundraising and supporting deeper engagement from senior leaders and the Board in fundraising activity.

Manage end-to-end logistics for Board and Committee meetings, including scheduling, circulation of papers, and maintaining a forward planner for the governance calendar.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
You will be an experienced and dynamic communicator with significant demonstrable experience in fundraising and/or communications at a senior level, coupled with an awareness and up to date knowledge and experience of the tools that would maximise the success of our communications and fundraising activities. In addition, you will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to confidently build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders. Possessing strong management skills, you will have experience of managing small multi-disciplinary teams, providing direction and leadership to enable development and high performance, and the ability to role-model a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Education/ Training
Master’s Degree in communications, marketing, public fundraising or another relevant field (or at least 5-years’ experience).
Work Experience

At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, supporter engagement or communications, with at least 2 years’ experience directly managing staff.

Experience developing and leading integrated multi-channel and multi-stakeholder communications, engagement and/or fundraising strategies.

Experience in growing audiences, engagement and/or income streams.
-
Experience communicating about and/or fundraising for and/or maintaining engagement with Afghanistan or a similar context.

Experience using KPIs and data to make data-driven decisions to improve efficacy and efficiency.

Experience managing and monitoring a tight budget.

Experience conceptualising, producing and commissioning multimedia content, from marketing and fundraising collateral to audiovisual content.

Experience running full-funnel, multi-channel marketing strategies including paid advertising.

Understanding of risks associated with communications, public fundraising, and NGO operating contexts, and experience in mitigating those risks.

Experience supervising, organising, motivating and developing staff.

In depth knowledge of trends in storytelling, brand, PR, marketing and fundraising.
