Job Title: Consultant Suicide Prevention Therapist

THE CHARITY 
Suicide is the leading cause of death of men under 35 and three quarters of those who die by suicide are men. James’ Place exists to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis through delivering clinical services. We are a charity currently offering free, life-saving therapy to suicidal men at our centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle. 

James’ Place was set up by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley in 2008 after their twenty-one-year-old son, James, died by suicide ten days after a minor operation. James had no history of mental illness or depression and had sought urgent help for anxiety and suicidal thoughts but didn’t find it. 

James' Place was set up to make the experience of finding help as easy as possible. We offer men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis a brief, intensive, therapeutic intervention in a safe environment. Men who walk through the door at James’ Place will be in a space where they feel valued and respected.  We provide a calm and peaceful environment both inside the centres and in our outside spaces, accessible to men who visit us as well as their friends and families. We have so far treated over 5,100 men who might otherwise have been unable to access the support they desperately need.

In early 2026 we will be opening our fourth centre in Birmingham. Our new centre in Birmingham will be there to support suicidal men living in the West Midlands.

THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for Consultant Suicide Prevention Therapist to join our expanding clinical directorate. The Consultant Suicide Prevention Therapist is a senior clinical leader responsible for the delivery, governance, quality and continuous improvement of the organisation’s therapeutic suicide prevention model.

The Consultant Suicide Prevention Therapist reports to the Director of Clinical Services who retains overall strategic, executive and corporate accountability for all aspects of clinical services across the organisation.

Within this structure, the Consultant Suicide Prevention Therapist plays a pivotal leadership role in translating strategic direction into operational delivery of therapeutic services. The postholder ensures consistency, quality, safety and fidelity of clinical practice across centres, working closely with Heads of Centres and clinical staff to embed standards, manage risk and drive service improvement.

The role combines coordination and delivery of specialist clinical expertise, leadership, research and evaluation, clinical training and opportunity to deputise for the Director of Clinical Services in defined areas of delegated responsibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Specialist Clinical Practice

• Provide expert consultation on cases involving increased risk
• Operate with high autonomy in complex, high-stakes clinical decision-making
• Model advanced formulation, safety planning and therapeutic engagement
• Support multidisciplinary decision-making in situations with significant clinical and organisational implications
• Hold a small, specialised caseload offering welcome assessment and interventions

Research and Evaluation

• Review existing research and literature to inform your own work
• Lead clinical audit and service evaluation programmes
• Initiate and oversee research activity in suicide prevention
• Develop academic partnerships where appropriate
• Disseminate learning internally and externally
• Analyse and interpret data and other information
• Comply with ethical, legal, and health and safety requirements when undertaking research

Clinical Training

• Lead on advanced clinical training frameworks
• Design and (co)deliver suicide prevention and risk management training
• Develop and maintain clinical competency frameworks
• Provide supervision to senior clinicians and specialist practitioners as required
• Embed reflective practice and continuous professional development structures

Service Performance, Quality Data Leadership

• Establish and monitor KPIs and clinical outcome measures
• Interpret complex clinical and operational data to inform service improvement
• Lead quality improvement initiatives across centres
• Ensure robust data governance and confidentiality standards
• Oversee digital safety and governance in remote or technology-enabled delivery
• Use evaluation findings to influence strategic and commissioning discussions

Strategic and Service Leadership 

• Support implementation of the Director of Clinical Services’ strategic vision for therapeutic services
• Lead operational delivery of the organisation’s suicide prevention therapeutic model across centres
• Translate organisational strategy into clear clinical standards, competencies and delivery expectations
• Work collaboratively with Heads of Centres to ensure consistent standards of care, governance and risk management
• Provide professional leadership and clinical direction to Principal-, Senior- and Suicide Prevention Therapists
• Ensure fidelity to evidence-based suicide prevention frameworks
• Represent the organisation in multi-agency suicide prevention partnerships and regional forums
• Escalate systemic risks, quality concerns and strategic issues appropriately

Clinical Governance and Organisational Risk

• Lead and maintain the clinical governance framework for suicide prevention services
• Oversee serious incident review processes and ensure implementation of organisational learning
• Lead on governance, audit and risk reporting relating to therapeutic services
• Ensure safeguarding standards are consistently embedded across centres
• Develop and review organisational policies relating to suicide risk management and crisis response

Essential
Qualifications

• Professional qualification in Psychology, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Psychiatry, Nursing, Social Work, or equivalent
• Current registration with relevant statutory body or accredited membership of recognised professional body (e.g., Health and Care Professions Council, NMC, UKCP, BACP, BABCP)

You will be understanding and passionate about the needs of women, have knowledge of the practical, emotional, social and economic issues facing them, have experience of and a desire to work in trauma responsive settings, and evidence experience of developing and shaping innovative services.

This role will be the CQC Registered Manager for a women’s-only residential service specialising in providing safe therapeutic environments for those who have experienced multiple disadvantage and those who have experienced past trauma. Therefore there is an Operational Requirement for this role to be fulfilled by a female (determined compliant under ACAS guidelines for recruiting applicants with a protected characteristic to do a certain job).[1]

The role

This role is an operational manager post that requires securing registration with the Care Quality Commission as an individual, and the continued management of a service also registered with the CQC.  

You will report to one of five Heads of Operations across the UK who report to the Director of Operations, and you will provide leadership and management to deputy managers (who in turn will manage the staff teams) and a nurse. This role is the figurehead of the service on-site, and balances the ongoing service provision with regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement.

Phase one is now complete, the building has been completely refurbished to a high specification and has since opened in Autumn 2023.

Following the launch, this role will be the CQC Registered Manager for this service, with overall responsibility for it, including the programme provided, the staffing, the environment and the care and safety provided to residents.

The organisation

Phoenix Futures has been providing rehabilitation services for over 50 years. In support of the current Drug Strategy in England (From Harm to Hope) and the investment in residential services in Scotland, Phoenix are committed to rebuilding capacity across both countries in the residential rehab sector. In 2022/23 we launched two new residential services (Oakwood Lodge, an Enhanced Therapeutic Community in Derby, and Harper House, a National Specialist Family Service in North Ayrshire), and continue to identify further opportunities to increase provision.

The Ley Community began delivering a Therapeutic Community from its site in Yarnton in 1971 and established a well-regarded service up to its temporary closure in 2019. Joining the Phoenix Group has secured the additional investment needed to redevelop, and join the largest portfolio of residential services in the country. Responding to feedback from across referrers and those who use our services, the new service on this site will provide for women in need of a female-only space to safely and comfortably engage in treatment in a residential setting. Phoenix has a history of providing specialist services, including the CQC-rated Outstanding Grace House, a female-only rehab previously located in Camden. We take the history of both organisations forward into this development and will open later this year with great expectation. You will be key to achieving this, and the ongoing successes of this service.

About the role

The Rostering & Workforce Optimisation Manager role at Affinity Trust is a high-impact role with a clear purpose: to improve rostering quality, strengthen cover planning and reduce avoidable agency use.

You’ll work with Support Managers, Operations Managers and senior leaders to spot where things are not working as well as they should, understand why, and put practical improvement plans in place. That might mean identifying patterns in sickness and annual leave cover, highlighting gaps between commissioned and rostered hours, improving the way rosters are reviewed, or helping managers use the rostering system more consistently and meaningfully.

You’ll set clear minimum rostering standards, lead a regular governance and review rhythm for priority locations, and create repeatable insight packs that help operational leaders make better decisions. We’re looking for someone who is analytical, practical and confident working with people at different levels of the organisation.

You will ideally bring:

• Experience of improving rostering, workforce deployment or operational performance in a multi-site environment
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to turn data into practical action

The Role

As a Researcher, you will deliver research and analysis on forest and farm finance across the Global South, with a special emphasis on Latin America, working to strengthen sustainable finance models that support people, nature and climate goals.

A significant focus of the role will be designing and delivering action research projects, generating qualitative and quantitative evidence and applying appropriate research frameworks to deepen understanding of forest and farm finance.

Working with forest and farm producer organisations, you will analyse findings, develop new knowledge and produce research outputs that support the development of green value chains, improved access to finance and stronger self-generated finance models.

You will also co-ordinate collaborative projects with international partners, contribute to funding proposals and support communication and engagement activities that share research insights with wider audiences.

- Write and edit research outputs for publication and dissemination

About You

To be considered as a Researcher, you will need:

• A solid research background with skills and experience evidenced by a track record of growing publications in your own field (e.g. research reports, policy briefs, tools or toolkits)
• Field research and in-country experience in forest and farm development work in Latin America
• Experience in research or in technical capacity development in relevant areas such as forestry or agroforestry, forest enterprise development, climate or development finance
• Experience of research team coordination, including from a distance
• Fluency in both English and Spanish
• Knowledge of institutions, actors, and current debates and research agendas in the field of forestry, agriculture and development
• An understanding of how to work effectively with partners in developing countries
• A relevant postgraduate degree in an area such as forestry, land use, economics, sustainable development or similar, or equivalent experience

You will have successfully completed the PG Certificate in Supervision for Children and Young People’s Mental Health or must be willing to complete this course as part of your employment with us, should the opportunity arise (with our support).

Working closely with schools in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, you will supervise and support a diverse staff team to deliver a large NHS contract. Your role will be to provide supervision and line management to staff, as well as delivering CBT based group and 1:1 interventions in schools.

Key Responsibilities

Supervisory, clinical and line management

· Supervise and line manage a team of mental health professionals and/or trainees based in schools.

· Work closely with the MHST Service Manager and Clinical Lead to ensure that the provision is high quality, clinically safe and reflects best practice.

· Work in partnership with families to provide culturally appropriate psychological interventions.

· Hold a caseload, including more complex cases. Make referrals to appropriate agencies (e.g. CAMHS).

· Develop and help deliver workshops, groups and individual interventions for children and young people in schools, utilising CBT principles.

· Work with the Whole School Approach Lead and Clinical Lead to identify training and support needs for school staff and/or parents.

Qualifications (Essential)

· Appropriately qualified and registered professional e.g.  EMHP, clinical or educational psychologist, systemic family therapist, psychotherapist, CBT therapist, Mental Health Nurse or social worker with CYP MH experience. 

· Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the BABCP/HCPC/UKCP/NMC/BACP/BPS/Social Work England.

· Registration with BPS or BABCP or equivalent.

• Liaise with the CEO and the leadership team to update the organisational plan and workstream plans, also keep track of relevant priority actions and progress.
• Provide administrative support for governance processes such as the Annual Financial Audit, Trustee Board meetings, the Charity Commission and Companies House submissions.
• Provide administrative support to the organising and running fundraising activities and events.
• Administrative support and coordination for the annual planning of Short Courses and Post Graduate Qualifications programmes. 
• Organise, provide administrative support, and attend as appropriate, weekly operational meetings, monthly Executive meetings, and other project meetings, led by the CEO. Prepare meetings set up, information and any required papers in advance. Organise dates, taking and sending out minutes and coordinate follow-up actions ensuring progress and completion.
• Liaise with the CEO to prepare, format, edit and update reports and policies for internal and external audiences to a high standard.
• Provide a professional first point of contact for the CEO and as required liaise with her and the leadership team in order to respond to emails or phone calls and organise follow up meetings.
• Office team support such as reception/admin cover or support with events, as and when occasionally required.
• Carry out responsibilities with due regard to the Gestalt Centre values, policies and procedures.

• Educated to degree level or equivalent with good English and Maths.
