The Role

Crossness Pumping Station is a unique, world heritage site built in 1865 to help rid London of cholera. Lying abandoned since the 1950s, it has been lovingly restored by a group of enthusiasts and volunteers since 1987. We are moving into the next phase of our development as a museum and need to improve our support to existing volunteers and recruitment of new ones. About the role

The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing and overseeing the recruitment, induction, training and support of volunteers for Crossness Engines Trust.

The City of Winchester Trust is Winchester’s civic society and is a registered charity. It is dedicated to ensuring that Winchester is a vibrant and desirable place to live, work, study and visit. It has approximately 500 members.

The Trust is seeking an Operations and Administrative Officer to support the smooth running of the Trust. We are searching for a Health & Safety Advisor to play a vital role in supporting our Health & Safety Managers by providing expert advice on activities across the charity and hybrid environments. In this role, you'll be the go-to expert for health and safety matters across our organisation, providing advice and practical support to ensure we meet our statutory obligations and control any health and safety risks to our people, and anyone else affected by the charity's activities. From investigating incidents to developing operational procedures, you'll have the opportunity to create a safe and supportive environment across a diverse range of areas (e.g., Trading, Fundraising, Research, and many more), meaning no day will be the same.

What will I be doing?

• Providing first-line health and safety (H&S) advice and support across Cancer Research UK via phone and email.

• Leading the investigation of specified accidents and H&S incidents, making recommendations for changes, and ensuring that records are updated accurately.

• Providing advice and support to staff on workstation set up, ensuring that training records are maintained, and appropriate risk assessments are in place.

• Undertaking active monitoring activities to show compliance across a diverse range of health and safety issues.

• Helping to develop and implement safe operational procedures which identify and account for all relevant hazards.

• Supporting the risk assessment process, ensuring accurate records are maintained.

• Playing an active role in developing H&S information and training, ensuring to share and communicate with relevant stakeholders.

• Undertaking other tasks, as necessary, to contribute to the team objectives and those of Cancer Research UK.

What skills will I need?

• NEBOSH General Certificate level+ qualified (or equivalent) Health & Safety professional who has advised on health and safety matters in large, complex, and hybrid organisations (both onsite and remote-based).

• Demonstrable understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and good practice.

• Excellent stakeholder engagement and management with demonstrable interpersonal, influencing, and negotiating skills with a proven ability to communicate effectively in writing, face-to-face, and by telephone with a wide-ranging audience.

• Proficient in using accident & compliance management systems and databases.

• Ability to work as part of a team and contribute towards the team's collective success

• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify creative solutions to a diverse range of problems.

• Able to travel across the UK to Cancer Research UK stores and offices (ideally has a driver's license, but we're open to candidates who can travel via public transport).

Volunteers are the backbone of our operation at FareShare South West (FSSW). We have over 350 volunteers from a myriad of backgrounds, who make up 90% of our team. The volunteers help with every aspect of the operation, from driving vans, picking orders, to administrative duties. FSSW has built a successful volunteer programme which supports a wide demographic of people and multiple motivations for volunteering. This role will take a lead on all aspects of recruitment, retention, and development of our volunteer programme during this exciting time in the charity as we expand. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Volunteer Recruitment  

• Work with the Communications and Volunteering teams to actively promote the volunteer programme across Bristol

• Work with the wider FSSW team to support and develop volunteering opportunities for corporate supporters and food partners; taking a lead in the delivery of corporate volunteering events 

• Use and improve on existing processes to manage recruitment from initial enquiry through to successful onboarding of prospective volunteers and partners  

• Develop outreach activities to increase diversity, social impact, and community engagement 

• Work with Head of Employability & Volunteering and the wider team to ensure sufficient dependable volunteers to meet the operational needs, working to KPIs 

• Work with the Volunteer Coordinators to identify fluctuations in the volunteer rota, and action accordingly

• Work with the Head of Employability & Volunteering and Volunteer Coordinators to identify tasks/roles/needs to inform a recruitment strategy for the future

Volunteer Retention: 

• Enhance the existing volunteer retention programme

• Work in collaboration with the Plymouth Volunteering Team to ensure alignment in the delivery of the organisational strategy 

• Work with the Head of Employability & Volunteering and Head of Operations to ensure the delivery of high-quality volunteer induction and training 

• Analyse and monitor volunteer retention, noting reasons for moving on and developing strategies to improve retention where required 

• Develop volunteer roles in conjunction with the Operations Teams

• Build upon and establish new referral partners and recruitment platforms/streams 

• Support the Head of Employability and Volunteering to ensure all Volunteer policies and processes are up to date, and training is given to staff to uphold them 

• Work with the Employability Team to create routeways into volunteering 

Administration, policies, procedures, and risk management 

• Support the Head of Employability & Volunteering to develop and maintain volunteer policies, procedures, and risk assessments 

• Ensure volunteers are adhering to FSSW's Code of Conduct, facilitating meetings with volunteers if necessary, conducting relevant risk assessments, and following safeguarding measures 

• Ensure the Volunteer Coordinators are sufficiently trained in the CRM system (Salesforce) to keep up to date in line with GDPR

• Work with the Volunteer Coordinator/s to ensure FSSW’s databases are up to date with volunteer information, including skills, availability, and contact details/preferences

The charity is seeking a dedicated Philanthropy Officer to join its ambitious Fundraising Team and play a key role in sustaining and growing income from trusts and foundations. Working closely with the CEO, Philanthropy Manager and colleagues across policy, science, communications, and finance, the postholder will ensure funders receive timely and impactful updates on the charity's work.

With a flair for turning complex scientific issues into clear and persuasive communications, they will be highly organised, proactive, and motivated by the opportunity to protect people and nature from harmful chemicals.
