The Organisation
Action on Disability (AoD), founded in 1979, is one of London’s leading Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs). As we believe in the Social Model of Disability, our values and principles embrace inclusive and accessible ways of working, seeking co-production and co-design from our Disabled members, encouraging and respecting diversity. AoD is a medium sized charity with a Board of Trustees, 27 staff, a strong pool of casual staff and volunteers, including many with lived experience of disability – all of whom are passionate about removing the barriers faced by Disabled people.
Action on Disability provides four key services: Youth, Employment, Welfare Benefits, and Independent Living.
The Project
Our Place is a project that is facilitated and managed by AoD. It is a 3-year National Lottery Community fund and Propel London funded project that will sit within our Independent Living Service. Our Place creates a community space and resource hub that Disabled people can call their own – led by them and facilitated by AoD staff. This service will be genuinely embedded in the local area, meeting needs expressed by local Disabled people to have their own place, and building links with amenities, businesses, and event spaces in Hammersmith and Fulham.
We want to enable businesses to feel more confident to welcome Disabled people and remove barriers. We want to create an inclusive and accessible space for Disabled people to socialise, build skills, pursue interests, and develop peer relationships.
Our Place operates alongside, and enhances, our current service provision. Central to this is ensuring that Disabled people have meaningful ownership over the space, from Steering Board input to operational delivery.
Disabled people will achieve their potential through four outcomes:
- Increased confidence, knowledge, and skills through opportunities to lead, learn and do new things.
- Reduced isolation and improved mental well-being through a place to socialise.
- Equity of access and participation in the local community.
- Mitigation of the pandemic’s impact, through building new opportunities.
The Post
We are looking for a full time Project delivery support officer with a commitment to the vision of AoD to promote Independent Living, Peer Support and Co-production within this project. You will have strong community project delivery, administration and support skills, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to support the project and work effectively as part of a team. Your working hours will be dependent on the Our Place project activity schedule and may include early evening and weekend work.
Essential
- An understanding, commitment and positive attitude toward Disability and experience of working for and with Disabled people.
- Demonstrable experience of community project delivery.
- Experience of coordinating the delivery of projects
- Experience of supporting the fulfilment of reporting and monitoring needs.
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of boundary management in relation to volunteers, staff and those who access a service.
- An understanding of working within a multiagency, person-centered approach
- Professional knowledge and experience of implementing safeguarding procedures and purpose.

A part-time role developing, curating, delivering and finessing training for two distinct audiences – training for those who have low digital confidence, as well as young people, in how to use digital devices effectively and efficiently; and also training for those who may come into contact with, or wish to learn about, digital poverty, including staff of corporates and community providers.
The former audience – learning about digital skills – will need to gain knowledge and understanding about the foundational elements of using laptops, tablets and smartphones. This includes Essential Digital Skills such as setting passwords, connecting to Wi-Fi and using keyboards, as well as soft skills such as staying safe online, critical thinking and recognising fake news or AI generated imagery.
The latter audience – learning about digital poverty – will need to learn about the causes and impacts of digital poverty, what impact digital exclusion has on families and communities, and how to understand if someone is digitally included.
There may be other training requirements as well – such as training external users of our systems, training corporate volunteers, or a train-the-train model of supporting young people to work with those in their communities.
Key responsibilities
- Work with CEO and SMT to gain a strong understanding of the content we wish to deliver.
- Design a range of standardised training materials, developing curriculum plans, which are able to be tailored easily for cohorts.
- Work with the Head of Development to ensure training meets the needs of potential partners.
- Work with delivery and project officers to understand training requirements as they relate to specific programmatic requirements.
- Deliver training as the lead trainer for the charity, usually in person but sometimes online.
- Work with partner organisations to build strong relationships, especially when working with corporate volunteers.
- Create and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness of the training, gather feedback and finesse the training models you have created.
- Be able to run a train the trainer model for corporate volunteers, other staff, and young people on specific programmes, briefing them and ensuring consistency and quality.
- Work with the Head of External Affairs to produce high quality materials, including presentations, leaflets and other resources.
- Support marketing, project management, contract management and other functions delivered by other team members.
- Provide accurate reporting on the basis of feedback, participation and other indicators of current success.
- Take a self-sufficient approach to logistical management, whilst also working with colleagues where duties overlap.
- Keep up to date on developments in digital skills, maintaining subject matter knowledge.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the digital poverty landscape, including across policy, research and interventions, to inform training delivery.
- Work with colleagues to role model best practice in training.
The role is remote based - the whole team works from home - but you will need to be able to regularly travel across the UK including potential overnight stays and evening working. About the role

You will possess sound experience of managing and delivering contracts, partnerships and services along with experience of being involved in implementing and reviewing change management, whilst demonstrating excellent budgeting and financial reporting skills.
The ability to proactively develop and maintain key relationships and having impressive analytical skills to use insight and evidence to present data, manage performance and to identify and implement systems change are vital to this role, as are impressive interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

To be successful in this role, you will have at least two years of experience in an Operations or Governance role or demonstratable experience in a similar role. You will have a strong understanding of charity governance and compliance and experience providing secretariat duties for a Board.
You will be a detail-orientated individual who is proactive and have excellent organisational skills and experience managing multiple projects. You will be a problem solver, who enjoys implementing change and can bring new approaches to project and people management.

About the role

It will involve maintaining and uplifting a small portfolio of existing major donor relationships by delivering a programme of excellent donor cultivation and stewardship.
It will involve reaching new audiences through proactively building a pipeline of new major donor opportunities by using new acquisition strategies with a focus on a peer-peer approach and collaborating with other Income Generation teams, senior staff and volunteers to reach and engage with new audiences.

About the team
Shelter’s High Value Partnerships department is crucial to achieving our charitable mission and is responsible for raising £30 million a year through fundraising with high-net-worth individuals, legacy and in-memory supporters, trusts and foundations, companies and statutory funders. The Philanthropy team work with high-net-worth individuals to raise major donor income to help power Shelter’s work.
You will work closely with the Senior Philanthropy Manager to shape and deliver new tactics to expand our network of potential donors. You will be supported by our experienced and energetic fundraising team along with colleagues in frontline services, campaigns and finance.
