Job Title: Engagement Worker

Location: Bedford

Salary: £24,500

Shift Pattern: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Sunday hours can vary between 08:00 - 16:00, 09:00 - 17:00 and 12:00 - 20:00 on a rota basis which will include varying hours dependent on service needs. You may also be required to work bank holidays if the rota falls on this day.

About the role

We're looking for an Engagement Worker to join our residential service based in Bedford which is a 19-bed residential service close to Bedford Town Centre offering a safe, peaceful and supportive living environment for individuals wishing to engage with support to assist them in increasing their levels of independence. You will support with various responsibilities within the service, with a focus on providing social contact and company to help enhance quality of life, personal safety, health and security, sustainment of tenancy and improving financial independence. You will support our residents to gain the relevant skills and knowledge to gain greater independence, supporting them back into the community. 

The role is varied, with each day being different, depending on service and resident needs. You may need to run and engage in activities, complete support sessions, arrange external activities, in house activities, and support with attending appointments.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two key individuals to join the team at Basis Yorkshire as a Sexual Exploitation Specialist (16+). You will be providing bespoke trauma informed 1-1 and group work for women who have experienced, or who are experiencing sexual exploitation. 

This role provides trauma informed support to girls and women who are at risk of or experiencing sexual exploitation. Working as part of an Adult Sexual Exploitation Partnership Project, you will be supporting girls and women aged 16+ using a theory of change which includes engaging through assertive outreach, helping to overcome trauma and complex emotions, empowering to build positive social networks and building on strengths through exploring their options. You will also be responsible for facilitating a weekly drop in session for women who have experienced Sexual Violence alongside another member of the Basis team. Lancaster & District Homeless Action Service Limited, known as LDHAS, is a registered charity and they have been working with street homeless and vulnerably housed people for over 32 years. They provide essential needs support, advice and information, from their centre in Lancaster with additional support from visiting partner agencies like Citizens Advice, Changing Futures, SafeNet, Calico, Red Rose Recovery, the Hep C Trust and Inspire.

The Role

The post holder will operationally manage Lancaster & District Homeless Action Service ensuring effective day-to-day management and the delivery of high-quality support to street homeless individuals with complex needs. This role involves leading and managing a team of staff and volunteers and facilitating a hub for a range of services. The post holder will foster strong partnerships within the hub ensuring it operates efficiently, safely and in line with LDHAS's values and policies. The post-holder will also lead LDHAS in the strategic development of its vision as a hub for a range of services. This includes strategy and business planning development and articulating LDHAS's vision and mission in partnership with the Board.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strong and effective leadership to the operational team, fostering a positive and collaborative working environment.
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of LDHAS services, ensuring they are delivered to a high standard and in line with agreed policies and procedures.
• Manage and support the performance and development of staff and volunteers, including supervision, appraisal, and training.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships with partner agencies and stakeholders within the hub and the wider community.
• Ensure the hub operates as a safe and welcoming environment for service users, staff, and volunteers, adhering to health and safety regulations.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of LDHAS's strategic plans and operational policies.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of services, identifying areas for improvement and implementing changes as required.
• Manage budgets effectively within the operational remit, ensuring value for money.
• Ensure accurate record-keeping and data collection in line with organisational requirements and relevant legislation.
• Prepare reports for the Board of Trustees and other stakeholders on operational activities and performance.
• Lead on safeguarding matters within the operational team, ensuring adherence to LDHAS's safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Manage risk effectively within the operational areas, implementing appropriate risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
• Respond dynamically to situational changes and risks, ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, staff, and volunteers.
• Develop and monitor plans and processes for ensuring the long-term viability of the organisation and ensure impact reporting is developed.
• Work with the Finance Officer and Fundraising & Development Officer to ensure the financial sustainability of the charity by identifying and securing appropriate funding that supports the charity in achieving its objectives.
• Identify and respond to emerging needs and trends within the local homeless community.
• Represent the LDHAS at relevant forums and meetings.
• Respond to media enquiries, manage events, photo calls and visits.
• Produce, edit, proofread, and co-ordinate complex internal and external publications, client leaflets and public advice documents.
• Write press releases, articles; oversee print and distribution.
• Work with the management team to prepare the annual report and annual accounts for authorisation by the Board and then submission to The Charity Commission and Companies House.
• Report to the Board on the organisation's strategic developments and challenges and risks.
• Alongside the Board take responsibility for the legal obligations of the organisation in accordance with The Charity Commission and Companies House.

Skills and Qualifications

• Professional knowledge of working with vulnerable adults and homelessness. Gained through qualification and/or equivalent Bachelor level experiential learning.
• The ability to draw on and apply personal lived experiences appropriately.
• Evidence of continuing professional development
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of the issues faced by homeless or vulnerable people and the difficulties they experience in accessing services that are responsive to their needs
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures related to homelessness and safeguarding.

The Role

The post holder will provide an engagement service with neighbours, the local community, visiting professionals and the clients, volunteers and staff of LDHAS in line with its aims and objectives.

The postholder will have lived experiences which support the work of LDHAS. They will have up to date knowledge of key stakeholders, support networks and agencies. They will liaise and engage with a variety of homeless hub organisations as required.

The postholder will support LDHAS clients, motivating and enabling clients as they engage with LDHAS and advocating for them as appropriate. The postholder will create a psychologically safe environment for clients enabling the completion of dynamic assessments, share information about LDHAS services and triage clients enabling them to access the services offered by key stakeholders including those organisations supporting the LDHAS hub in order to support individual needs. They will support clients with clothing, shower and laundry facilities. 

The postholder will coordinate the engagement aspect of day to day running of the centre, including the attendance of clients and the management of donations and footfall in the building. They will ensure that health and safety protocols and procedures are maintained throughout the building during the hours of opening, alert to safeguarding and ensuring procedures followed.

They will ensure that good relations are maintained with the neighbours of LDHAS and with the local community. They will ensure that LDHAS clients in the immediate vicinity of the building are conducting themselves in an acceptable way.

· Provide practical and emotional support, advice, information and advocacy to migrants living in Newport. Working towards the goal of preventing homelessness, increasing connections in the local community and securing appropriate accommodation

Principle responsibilities

1. Deliver person centred housing related support to clients that promotes their mental wellbeing and independence supporting them to progress to a life without the need for support. To work with clients in assessing their needs to create individual personal support and plans.

2. Ensure that anti-racism, equality and diversity are central to your work addressing disadvantage, inequalities, stigma and discrimination, making sure that you take action to reach people from marginalised or disadvantaged groups and that the services you provide match their needs.

3. To network effectively with voluntary and statutory agencies to promote the needs of the clients. Working with clients so that they have the knowledge, understanding and skills to access services, support and to improve their mental wellbeing and resilience. To refer to other agencies where possible if they are not eligible for the service

4. To assist clients with benefits and housing and employment to increase income and opportunities to be suitably housed, keeping up to date with the Social Security system and housing legislation, ensuring that clients are referred for specialist advice where appropriate.

5. Focus on client involvement ensuring that clients have their views heard and that the needs and wishes of service users have an impact on the services they receive.

6. Work as part of the Housing and Tenancy Support (HATS) Team and the wider Newport staff team to develop and deliver activities that achieve positive outcomes for migrants in Newport.

7. Ensure all work is recorded and monitored and contribute to evaluating the service.

8. Work in accordance with best practice, legal requirements, the policies of Mind in Gwent, and the policies outlined by the funders.

9. Share models of good practice to aid in organisational development across Mind in Gwent.

10.  To contribute to the work of other projects and teams of Newport Mind as when required or directed to provide cover or to develop new skills or take on new opportunities.

8. To support and contribute to our overall aim of the co-production and participation of people with experience of mental health problems, and to be committed to working alongside people with experience of mental health problems, as colleagues, lived experience experts and campaigners.

9. To be flexible, adaptable and undertake work to support the aims of Mind in Gwent, the aims of the Housing and Tenancy Support Team and the aims of Housing Support Grant funding including participating in an on call rota where required.
