Actively Interviewing
This organisation is scheduling interviews as applications come in. They're ready to hire as soon as they find the right person. Don't miss your opportunity, apply now!
We are looking for a motivated team player to join our Business Development and Philanthropy Team, which leads and co-ordinates our global fundraising from institutional and philanthropic sources.
You will provide crucial support to our team’s function by providing relevant and timely business intelligence and coordination to support our work with donors, including support for internal and external events that we organise to deepen donor engagement with our work.
Accountabilities
You will support the organisation of inspiring donor events, in person and online, working across multi-disciplinary teams and drawing together reflections and learnings afterwards to improve our donors' experience. You will help colleagues prepare for funding meetings — contributing to cases for support, proposals, donor reports and appeals— and support day-to-day stewardship, from thank-you letters to stewardship activities such as annual thankathons.
You will manage your own small portfolio of individual donors and charitable trusts giving at the £5,000 level, sending proposals and reports, and will maintain a strong knowledge of Practical Action's programmes so you can share stories of change and impact data confidently with current and prospective supporters.
You will support the team's intelligence hub: gathering, interpreting and sharing insight on key donors including governments, foundations and multilaterals; analysing funder strategies and calls for proposals; and working with regional and country teams to understand and meet their business intelligence needs. You will help ensure intelligence is shared and acted on across the organisation, including through the monthly news bulletin, and work with your manager to develop "so what" analysis that BD teams globally can act on. You will also keep our SharePoint and donor portal registrations accurate and well organised.
Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
To be successful in the role, the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
· A keen interest in international development and environmental issues.
· Excellent research, numeracy and analytical skills – not taking everything at face value and being able to discern the “so what” questions from trends and data.
· Proficient usage of Microsoft 365, especially Excel, Word (including mail merge) and Powerpoint.
· Ability to take complex data and synthesize it into consumable, actionable insight.
· Excellent presentation skills, able to synthesise information in written format, info graphics and other visual formats and will be proficient with using a range of software and digital tools to do this.
· Ability to work proactively and collaboratively with people from a range of cultures and across time zones.
· You are a self-starter, happy to work with various research resources and have an ability to work with imperfect systems and information.
· You are organized, conscientious and work well as part of a team.
· Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and to set priorities.
· Excellent written and spoken English.
· Commitment to development principles and Practical Action’s vision, mission and ambition.
Why join us?
The opportunity to work for an organisation that is taking practical action against poverty and the environmental crises to start the big changes the world urgently needs. A friendly and supportive culture, working with values driven and highly engaged colleagues, work life balance and flexible working – these are just some of the reasons we think Practical Action is a great place to work.
In the UK, our open plan offices are located in the centre of Rugby and near to Rugby train station but we also offer free parking.
In addition, we offer the following benefits:
· Full time roles are contracted at 35 hours per week.
· It is our normal practice to operate a hybrid working policy, where flexible working hours are enabled as well as remote working.
· 27 days holiday rising with continuous service, in addition to public holidays
· Pension scheme - employer contributes 10.5% of salary and the employee contributes 5%.
· Enhanced family friendly policies, including maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave.
· Life assurance (3 x annual salary).
· Cycle to Work scheme
· Employee Assistance Programme – access to our Wellbeing platform
· Learning and Development Opportunities
· Sit / Stand desks available in our modern offices.
How to apply:
To ensure that Practical Action meets its obligations of safer recruitment, appointment to posts within Practical Action will be subject to a satisfactory criminal check. Criminal checks will be conducted for all roles.
The successful applicant must already have the right to both live and work in the country that they are applying for, in this case, the United Kingdom and should be willing and able to travel.
If you want to work for an organisation with significant people ambitions, then we would like to hear from you. Please submit a copy of your CV (Maximum 2 pages) and a supporting statement that describes your suitability for the role and include answers to the following questions,
Questions
1. Interest and motivation: What draws you to international development and environmental issues, and why does Practical Action's mission and approach appeal to you specifically? Have you done anything (through study, volunteering, work experience, or personal interest) to explore this area so far?
2. Research and analytical skills: Tell us about a piece of research or analysis you've done — this could be from your studies, a work placement, a personal project, or volunteering — where you had to work with data or information and turn it into something clear and useful for someone else. What tools did you use, and how did you decide what mattered most?
3. Working with others and staying organised: Give an example of a time you worked as part of a team, possibly with people remotely in different geographies, and had to juggle several priorities or deadlines at once. This could be a group project, part-time job, society, or placement.

Background information
About us:
National Voices is the leading coalition of health and social care charities in England. We have more than 200 members covering a diverse range of health conditions and communities, connecting us with the experiences of millions of people. We work together to strengthen the voice of patients, people with Lived Experience, unpaid carers, their families and the voluntary organisations that work for them.
Our mission:
We advocate for a more equitable and person-centred health and care, shaped by the people who use and need it the most.
We do this by:
- Understanding and advocating for what matters to people, especially those living with health conditions and groups who experience inequalities
- Finding common cause across communities and conditions by working with member charities and those they support
- Connecting and convening charities, decisions makers and citizens to work together to change health and care for good.
Our five-year strategy:
In September 2024 we published a new five-year strategy that was co-produced with our staff, our member charities, our Lived Experience Partners and our key stakeholders. This set out three clear goals:
- End unequal access
By addressing the barriers experienced by those facing the worst outcomes, we will find solutions that improve care for all.
- Transfer power to people and communities
As a leader in co-production, we will help communities to work with system leaders at national and neighbourhood level to make big decisions together. This will maximise the skills and capabilities of patients, ensuring care is truly person-centred.
- Shift the measures of success
By campaigning for better patient experience and outcomes metrics, we can ensure that what matters to people becomes the key measure of success for the NHS.
In the first two years of the strategy we have already made big strides. For example, our work encouraging the Government to focus on “getting the basics right” has seen major policy initiatives designed to fix access to primary care and the 8am rush. Similarly, our work on the experience of waiting for elective care has seen the introduction of the first ever set of minimum standards for waiting.
Our work on the 10 Year Plan, and on the Quality Strategy, has also seen both patient experience and outcome measures given much greater prominence in how the NHS judges success and National Voices has now been commissioned by NHS England to help design the future of patient feedback mechanisms.
We have also successfully campaigned for funding formulas to be revised to enable the NHS to directly address the inverse care law and tackle the impact of health inequalities head on.
But there are challenges ahead, not least the role patients and communities play directly in co-producing improvement. With ICBs under huge financial pressures, and so much change in the health and care system, we need to make sure every piece of work we deliver is of the highest quality and adds real value. This is the only way to help others across the sector understand the value that people with Lived Experience offer to problem solving processes and creating better and more inclusive solutions.
