City Cancer Challenge Foundation (C/Can) supports cities around the world as they work to improve access to equitable, quality cancer care. The approach is built on the core principle that cities can drive impact at the national level by crafting data-driven solutions with the support of a network of global, regional, and local partners that reflect an understanding of the unique local context.
C/Can was launched by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) at the 2017 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. It was established as a standalone Swiss Foundation in January 2019 and is now active in 15 cities worldwide.
C/Can is launching a new funding strategy to further support its mission and commitment to cancer patients worldwide. This new approach includes diversifying and securing increased funding from a range of entities, including foundations, trusts, organizations, and other institutions. As part of this strategy, C/can is recruiting a Grants Officer to report to the Head of Global Public Affairs.
Purpose of role
Reporting to the Head of Global Public Affairs, the Grants Officer will support C/Can´s dynamic global team in mapping, prospecting, stewarding, and creating relationships with trusts, foundations, and institutions to increase and diversify their funding as they grow their impact globally.
This is a new role for an experienced hands-on prospect donor researcher and Grant Officer with a background working with health-related funders. The main aspect of the role will be to map grant opportunities, identify the most relevant ones for C/Can and coordinate the development of winning proposals. The Grant Officer will also manage one or more of the current partners within the health sector, creating proposals and fund requests, managing reports and financials, as well as all other practical work to steward partnerships.
This new position will work with C/Can´s Head of Global Public Affairs and Engagement and Partnerships Manager & Officer. It will be responsible for building a robust pipeline of potential donors and funding opportunities from a wide range of markets, including Europe and the USA. The ideal candidate will be an organized, hands-on, self-starter who enjoys problem-solving and working in a mission-focused, passionate team. They will have good stakeholder management skills and be able to multitask.
Key responsibilities
In coordination with the Head of Global Public Affairs:
● Research and scope potential new funding donors outside of the health area, identifying the right stakeholders to encourage and diversify funding for C/Can´s programmes making sure detailed, accurate records are retained.
● Support the development of a growing and robust pipeline of donor and funding opportunities outside the health sector, specifically focusing on grant opportunities.
● Ensure all grant proposals, concept papers, and other materials align with donor requirements and interests, supporting the full grant management lifecycle protocol.
● Ensure appropriate internal processes concerning new funding opportunities are followed to enable strategic decision-making, e.g., due diligence screening. This might encompass identifying and escalating risks to the Head of Global Public Affairs as necessary.
● Work closely with the Head of Global Public Affairs, Partnership & Engagement Manager, and Partnership & Engagement Officer on stewarding the prospect pipeline to ensure effective, joined-up cultivation of prospects.
● Draft clear and compelling fundraising material, including cases for support, funding proposals, concept notes, etc.; ensure the submission of high-quality applications, liaising with relevant C/Can staff.
● With the support of C/Can staff, manage the grant, monitor project execution, and develop technical and financial reports.
● Effectively manage time and workload to ensure progress against milestones and deadlines, reporting any possible challenges to the Head of Global Public Affairs.
● Manage one or more of the existing partners within the health sector, stewarding the grant process, creating proposals and fund requests, managing reports and financials, as well as all other practical work to steward partnerships.
Profile
Required work experience:
● At least 7 years of experience working in prospect research and/or grant management, preferably as part of national and international development work in global health.
● Demonstrated experience in prospect researching and grant writing, preferably in global health.
● Excellent writing skills with experience in bid/proposal writing, ideally having worked with US and European donors.
● Experience in successfully managing a portfolio of funding opportunities from prospect research to grant agreements.
● Ability to manage a range of internal and external stakeholders effectively and secure their inputs within tight deadlines.
Education
● Bachelor’s degree, master’s level preferred, or equivalent experience in global health, international development and/or business administration.
Languages
● Fluency in written and spoken English, other languages will be an advantage, especially in Spanish.

- Lead on the design and publication of high-quality digital and print information about Dystonia UK, its services, projects, and about dystonia, the condition, and medical services.
- Work closely with the Director of Fundraising and Communications to identify and communicate key news items and be responsible for the production and dissemination of the e-marketing
- Manage Dystonia UK's social media channels on a day-to-day basis ensuring all activity is in line with the charity's brand and communication strategy and work closely with the Directors to produce and develop the social media content schedule
- Engage directly with the organisations community by drafting private messages, replying to comments, and passing actions on to other members of staff where required.
- Creating and adapting content for each channel to maximise reach and engagement.
- Work with colleagues to provide event support by creating content to promote the event, liaising with speakers and partner organisations, and attending conferences and events where required
- Plan and organise activities to raise awareness of Dystonia UK, tying in with other notable calendar events such as Dystonia Awareness Month
- Support the Director of Fundraising and Communications to ensure that the organisation's branding is upheld in all aspects of external communication.
- Support the Director of Fundraising and Communications to develop branded merchandise.
- Support the Director of Fundraising and Communications to create the annual communications plan and contribute to the development of the marketing and communications strategy.
Dystonia UK is a small charity, and this is a busy role where someone with some communications experience will have the opportunity to work closely with a dynamic Director to really develop their skills and expertise both operationally and strategically. You'll be in a position of responsibility and will be able to work autonomously whilst also working with closely with and being supported to learn.
We would love to hear from you if have the following skills and experience:
- Previous demonstrable experience in a communications or marketing role including experience of writing website copy that is optimised for SEO, experience of design and content creation, and of copywriting for different audiences
- Experience of using social media platforms to convey an organisation's message to audiences, and of tailoring your social media output depending on platform and audience
- Experience of planning social media posts and of how to grow audience numbers
- Excellent written communication skills including creative copywriting and the ability to present complex information clearly
- High level of attention to detail and strong creative design skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a wide range of people and audiences both internally and externally
- Proven ability to manage own workload and ability to deliver to agreed deadlines.
- High-level skills in IT, including design packages such as Canva.
