The post holder will be flexible and skilled, with an essential interest in and experience of working with migrant and refugee clients, many of whom have additional complex needs. You will work closely with our immigration caseworker manager to provide one-to-one specialist immigration advice and casework to migrant and refugee clients in Brighton & Hove and across East and West Sussex in the areas of immigration & asylum up to OISC L2. We actively welcome applications from those with lived and relevant experience – please see the job description and person specification.
We are currently the only free, Level 2-accredited, year-round provider of out-of-scope immigration advice on the South Coast, and increasing local immigration capacity is critical to address growing demand and changing demographics in the region. Our current core caseload is largely non-EEA nationals whose immigration cases are out of scope of legal aid. However we are also seeing and will continue to see new arrivals and emerging needs in the region including Afghans resettled under the ARAP and ACRS schemes, Sudanese evacuees, EEA nationals who still have not registered for pre-settled or settled status, and an increasing number of both newly arrived and established asylum seekers placed in emergency (‘contingency’) and dispersal Home Office accommodation.
The balance of time spent between different client groups and cases will therefore need to be responsive to the changes we see in the city and region. Many of our clients also have complex additional needs including health and homelessness and the post holder will be expected to liaise closely with our generalist caseworkers and external providers to ensure that people’s holistic needs are met.
You will work as part of a small, supportive advice and casework team that also includes two generalist advice caseworkers, an employability caseworker, a groupwork facilitator and four dedicated resettlement caseworkers who are supporting newly resettled refugee families mainly from Syria and Afghanistan.
Regular supervision and support and in-house and on-the-job training will be provided, as well as external training on specific issues where needed. However you will need to be ready to step immediately into a busy advice environment with the necessary confidence, skills and knowledge to begin to deliver advice and casework and pick up an existing caseload.
Ideally you will already be OISC L2-accredited, but if only L1-accredited you must be willing to work towards accreditation within the 6-month probationary period.
Postholders will need to have the right to work in the UK.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
Hours: Part-time, 3 days per week (8 hours within the hours of 9 am to 6 pm with 1 hour’s lunch break) + one day of weekend support hub per month
Working days: Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (and one weekend day a month)

Location: Mostly office-based with once-a-month offsite location (office, occasional home and offsite) Office is based in the City of London near Bank station

*Overtime is compensated either by pay or time off in lieu
Holiday: Pro-rata of 30 days a year excluding bank holidays plus holiday office closure (before New Year’s holidays) and 1 day of annual mental health leave
Contract: 18 months temporary contract, 6 months probationary period
Start date: 1st July 2024 (Notice period will be considered with those who have notice periods) The first round of interviews will be scheduled for the week of 5th June 2024.

About us
This is who we are
We are a creative human rights organisation with a focus on children and young people. We believe children deserve to have their rights fully recognised and respected, just as all humans do. We press for rights – not charity – and campaign for a genuine shift in how governments and societies view and treat children. Through research, policy, art and creative storytelling, we encourage people to think critically about the world.
Guided by our CRIN Code, we are committed to building a team that represents a wide range of experiences, locations, backgrounds, heritage and perspectives. We understand that the world and its problems cannot be looked at in isolation, that everything is connected, and achieving change calls for many different voices. If this resonates with you – we would really love to hear from you.
This is why we need you
We see communications as storytelling. Because stories make our world. They hold real power and have real consequences. On a basic level, the stories we hear influence the things we believe, which in turn, influence the laws and policies making up the systems that govern us. So every aspect of how we present stories – how we read, watch and listen to them – matters. Looking at our work through this lens has challenged us to reframe our thinking on how we want to communicate.
Our website and our digital platforms are our biggest tools for communication. We have been working towards a dream of audiences encountering CRIN’s website as a holistic experience - bringing design, content and expression together. For our platforms to feel like spaces for conversation (open), not solely where people go for information (closed). Spaces to share ideas and build on the ideas of others to form a community. We still have a long way to go to get there. But we have started the work – and invite you to join us in continuing it.
This is why we are looking for a new Communications Manager to lead on planning and implementing our communications work.
About you
This is who we are looking for
You understand the power of language in all its forms: written, spoken, unspoken, and visual. You’re passionate about justice, equality and global issues facing our planet. Under the guise of your day job, you may even secretly be an artist. Crucially, you practise the disappearing art of listening.
You believe that storytelling has a crucial role to play in sharing ideas, changing opinions and building a collective vision for a better world. You have a strong understanding of how narratives are constructed and how to effectively communicate in different ways, with different audiences, on different platforms.
You’re aware that the world won’t change one tweet at a time, but you nonetheless know how to get the message across to the right people, and have a complete and nuanced understanding of digital audiences.
Knowledge, skills and qualities required
-
A genuine interest in working at an organisation focusing on cutting-edge human rights issues in creative ways;
-
Experience in a communications role at manager level;
-
Approach communications with a human touch - and a hint of mischief and humour;
-
Creative and strategic thinker with an understanding of communications in the digital age and an ability to adapt to new approaches and audiences;
-
Excellent copywriting and creative writing skills;
-
Excellent ability to plan and organise simultaneous projects;
-
Good knowledge of design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite;
-
Good knowledge of SEO best practices and familiarity with web platforms;
-
Experience using MailChimp, or similar email marketing platforms;
-
Eagle-eye attention to detail and excellent editing and proofreading skills;
-
High level of written and spoken English;
-
Thrives within a small but diverse and international team.
Responsibilities
This is what the role might entail
Working alongside CRIN’s Creative Directors and communications team, you will:
-
Write engaging and accessible copy for CRIN’s channels (website, social and digital platforms)
-
Manage the communications campaigns and digital strategies for CRIN’s projects, events and activities;
-
Manage content for our digital platforms in a variety of formats (illustrations, videos, audio and written pieces);
-
Develop a new social media strategy and manage our social media channels
-
Implement a shift in approach to CRIN’s Instagram, fully weaving it into how we communicate about our work and with our audience — beyond stats and followers — to build a community where there is mutual learning;
-
Coordinate tasks for our Digital Designer and Graphic Designer as required;
-
Manage CRIN’s newsletter, sending out regular news and updates to our mailing list;
-
Manage website maintenance and ensure that key pages on CRIN’s website are kept up to date and search engine friendly;
-
Support the Creative Directors’ work, taking CRIN’s existing research and policy work and reimagining it into different formats for different audiences;
-
Any other responsibilities discussed with CRIN’s Creative Directors.

Rainbow Migration, the longest-running charity in Europe dedicated to supporting LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system, is recruiting a Legal Officer to advise and help improve the representation of LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum, and help change the asylum and immigration system to one that treats everyone with compassion, dignity and respect.
We are looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with valid practising certificate, or already accredited to Level 3 OISC, with two years’ experience in providing advice and representation in asylum including working in legal aid.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of the legal advice service. Under the guidance of our Legal Service Manager, you will also build capacity amongst legal representatives by designing and delivering training, giving second tier advice and developing and coordinating a network of practitioners working in this area. You will use the knowledge you gain in this role to help deliver Rainbow Migration’s policy work, such as inputting into policy papers and meeting with partner organisations when required.
We will also consider applications from people who do not want to do the policy elements of the job, but to instead focus on first and second tier advice. Please mention in your covering letter if you are applying for this option.
This is a unique opportunity to build on your experience as a lawyer to improve representation across the sector and create change in government policy and practice. You will be supported to develop as a specialist lawyer and in your policy skills.
Responsibilities will include:
· Deliver one-off advice to adult LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum and work with colleagues to refer them to quality legal aid and pro bono lawyers
· Provide casework assistance e.g. helping to prepare witness statements, making referrals to other specialist organisations and taking other urgent steps (whilst not representing service users or maintaining a caseload)
· Provide occasional advice (within competence) on other issues affecting asylum and partnership service users such as asylum support, legal aid, trafficking, family reunion or community care
· Deliver second tier advice to the legal representatives of LGBTQI+ people seeking asylum and other charities and professionals
· Work with the Legal Service Manager to design and deliver training to lawyers, NGOs and other professionals
· Write blogs and articles on asylum and immigration policy and legislation as they apply to LGBTQI+ people
· Contribute to policy and briefing papers
· Assist with preparing guidelines and briefings for legal services and pro bono lawyers
The Legal Officer will not be providing direct legal representation of service users. However, the role includes substantive advice and casework within the scope of legal support and referrals for our service users, as well as merits testing and second tier advice.
Rainbow Migration’s vision is that LGBTQI+ people can settle in the UK and lead fulfilling lives. Our values are:
· Safety: We believe everyone should be safe from persecution and safe to be themselves. We strive to create a safe workplace culture, and we place importance on the wellbeing of everyone involved with Rainbow Migration.
· Integrity: We are thorough and honest in everything we do, and we take responsibility for our actions. We want to be accountable to our communities and those who support us.
· Belonging: We welcome and include all LGBTQI+ people, and we celebrate and value their range of experience in terms of gender, religion, race, age, disability status and class. We try to remove obstacles to participation, champion equality and promote a sense of family or home through our services.
· Respect: We believe that every person is equal and deserves the same level of courtesy, care, and attention. We respect the rights, wishes and feelings of our service users, and campaign for their rights to be respected as they go through the asylum and immigration system.
At Rainbow Migration, we don’t just accept difference – we celebrate it, we support it, and we thrive on it. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status. We consider all qualified applicants, consistent with any legal requirements.
We welcome applications from candidates with lived experience of going through the UK asylum or immigration system or who have been subject to immigration control. We offer a guaranteed interview scheme for anyone considered as disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if they meet the necessary criteria in the person specification.
Owing to the nature of the work, the successful applicant will be required at the point of conditional job offer to disclose all spent and unspent criminal records and subsequently to undergo an enhanced DBS check. See our website for more information.
Contract Type: Permanent.
Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week). Working part-time or job-sharing will be considered. Occasional work in the evenings and at weekends may be required but with plenty of notice. Rainbow Migration encourages staff to maintain a good work life balance and has a TOIL system in place.
Salary: Starting at £40,175, with potential annual step increases up to £44,868 (pro-rata for part-time employees), plus statutory employer’s pension contribution. In addition to an annual step increase, the trustees consider giving a separate inflationary increase every April.
Location: Remote or from Rainbow Migration’s offices in central London. Hybrid working will also be considered. The successful candidate could work from anywhere in the UK but would be expected to occasionally travel to London and other parts of the country for meetings and events. At the time of posting this advert, none of our staff are going into the office every day. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Annual Leave: 25 days per year rising after 24 months by 1 day after each year of service to maximum of 28 days per year (pro rata if working part-time).
Wellbeing: We offer up to two days of wellbeing leave to be taken at short notice in each calendar year. One-to-one clinical supervision is also available for this role.

Helpline and Triage Advisor
Do you want to make life better for LGBT+ victims and survivors of abuse?
Galop, the UK’s LGBT+ anti-abuse charity, is seeking a Survivor Engagement Manager. Galop works directly with thousands of LGBT+ people who have experienced abuse and violence every year. We specialise in supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, hate crime, and other forms of abuse including honour-based abuse, forced marriage, and so-called conversion therapies. We are a service run by LGBT+ people, for LGBT+ people, and the needs of our community are at the centre of what we do. We are person-centred, empowerment-based, and trauma- informed – meaning our focus is always on helping our clients decide what is best for them, and then supporting them through their journey.
Our National Helpline for LGBT+ Victims and Survivors of Abuse and Violence offers emotional support, advice and signposting to LGBT+ victims and survivors of domestic abuse, so-called “conversion therapy”, sexual abuse and violence and hate crime. We are person- centred, empowerment-based, and trauma-informed – meaning our focus is always on helping our clients decide what is best for them, and then supporting them through their journey.
The Helpline Advisor will work as part of a team, answering calls, responding to emails and webchats on Galop’s National LGBT+ Helplines. This will include supporting callers who have been subjected to violence and abuse, including domestic abuse, hate crime, sexual violence, and so-called conversion therapies.
The role will also work to identify the needs of each person referred to our triage service, bringing them into our advocacy services where appropriate, offering one-off guidance and assistance, or referring elsewhere when the clients’ needs suggest this is the best route for them.
We’re looking for someone with a trauma-informed approach to supporting survivors. You’ll need to have good resilience and self-care, and a strong understanding of the needs of LGBT+ victims and survivors.
Given the nature of the role and the individuals that will be supported, we would particularly welcome and prioritise applications from the global majority (a person of colour) as long as they meet essential criteria for the role.
Please note, that there is a genuine occupational requirement under the Sexual Orientation Regulations 2003 for this post. It is considered essential that post holders have experience of LGBT+ needs, and impact of discrimination as the Helpline is run for LGBT+ people experiencing abuse and violence.
This role requires some weekend and evening work, which is agreed in advance. The role is based in Galop’s central London building but hybrid working is available.
Location: Galop’s offices are in London. A hybrid working model is available or full-time remote working may be considered.
