Your role

You will lead the development and delivery of practical toolkits, resources and initiatives that support inclusion across the RNLI, with a particular focus on attracting, retaining and supporting underrepresented groups in operational and frontline roles.

Working closely with regional teams, the support centre and volunteers, you will develop and lead a national volunteer network and help embed inclusive practices across the volunteering lifecycle. Your work will directly contribute to breaking down barriers to participation and ensuring everyone can flourish within our lifesaving communities.

As Participation and Engagement Officer, you will:

• Drive forward the RNLI’s ambition to increase engagement with underrepresented and minoritised groups, including women, in lifesaving roles
• Design and implement practical inclusion toolkits and resources for volunteer managers
• Provide hands-on advice, guidance and support at a local level to embed inclusive practices
• Use data and insight to develop targeted inclusion plans aligned to wider people strategies and identify and address barriers to participation
• Deliver workshops and support the implementation of inclusion policies and toolkits

About you

We are looking for the following essential skills:

• Proven experience developing and delivering Equity, Diversity and Inclusion plans within a large, complex organisation (ideally a charity)
• Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
• Understanding of volunteering and inclusion at a community level
• Experience of driving improvement, delivering results and measuring impact
• Experience volunteering or working in a frontline or operational role is also desirable

About the Role

 

Working as part of the regional NZC consortium, you will:

Location: The contract for the role is London-based – it means that while you can be working anywhere in the UK, you are responsible for the cost of your travel to the London-based office. In 2021 we launched our specialist therapeutic service for LGBT survivors of gender-based violence and abuse. Our accessible service offers group work and one-to-one therapy which is free to all survivors. This busy role supports our growing service and helps us to ensure that the service is accessible, high quality and smooth running. You will work with a small team of freelance counsellors, employed counsellors and a service manager to provide a stable and sustainable service.
 
You will respond to referrals, making sure that survivors receive clear information about waiting times and next steps. You will book clients into assessments, arrange their first meetings and speak with them by phone, offering a warm and client-centred approach throughout. You will collect feedback and ensure that clients have the information they need when they need it. In this role, you’ll be responsible for:

The Lead Coach is primarily responsible for overseeing the training room and group sessions with young people. You will help shape the training environment and will confidently adapt and deliver materials and sessions to work within the group’s development towards work readiness.

Delivery of Spear Programme - Group and 1:1 coaching [60%]

• Preparing and coaching Spear Foundation sessions and 1-1s, ensuring that young people are engaged, retained and work-ready by the end of this initial phase of the programme.
• Building relationships with young people on the programme and managing culture and attitudes in the training room.
• Adapting the Spear coaching material according to the needs of the Trainees and managing behaviour effectively.

Delivery of Spear Career [20%]

• Delivering weekly Spear Career sessions (including running workshops with past Trainees), maintaining records and reporting on statistics, and creatively developing ongoing relationships with Spear Trainees.

Training the Assistant Coach [10%]

• Contributing towards the training and developing of the Assistant Coach by modelling excellent coaching and giving regular feedback.

Trainee recruitment [10%]

• Developing relationships with Job Centres and local referral agencies to ensure that the maximum number of Spear Trainees are enrolled on each programme. This involves liaising with referral agencies, active face-to-face recruitment and monitoring recruitment statistics.

Continuous professional development

• Continually engaging in professional development, including being part of our wider coaching programmes and supporting the Programme Managers with overall team training and development.

Active participation in and support for church team and mission

• Engage with Sunday services, and establish a strong personal presence, including speaking at church/events if required, contributing to prayer meetings, and demonstrating spiritual leadership as per Spear's Christian ethos and the mission of the church.

Kalayaan is an expert in the legal protection of migrant domestic workers and has been instrumental in campaigning and political advocacy for the protections afforded by the 1998 Overseas Domestic Worker visa.  Working closely with Kalayaan’s legal team, our policy advocates campaign to reinstate the rights stripped from Overseas Domestic visa holders in 2012 by tabling amendments to legislation and awareness raising campaigns.

Main duties and responsibilities

This is a generic job description that covers all the different roles of an industrial officer.

1. Bargaining

• Develop a bargaining agenda with activists and members, ensuring all bargaining activities are informed by the PCS equality agenda, policies and practices
• Take responsibility for negotiations with the management of civil service departments, agencies, public and private sector employers including pay and conditions of service of PCS members
• Represent PCS at joint meetings with management and other trade unions
• Prepare and present reports, and undertake effective monitoring and implementation of decisions, including consultative and legal ballots e.g. on pay and industrial action
• Participate in appropriate branch, group and national events to share information and knowledge

2. Campaigning

• Develop and maintain knowledge of campaigning, monitoring trends, establishing and maintaining contacts and attending appropriate internal and external meetings and events
• Progress national campaigning objectives as agreed by Annual Delegate Conference, Region/Nation and Group conferences and the National Executive Committee, providing strategic and technical advice to inform campaigning decisions
