As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced Interim HR Manager to help us build on strong foundations and take our people function to the next level, over a defined eight-month period (with the possiblility of extension through mutual agreement).

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations and line managing our HR Officer, you'll lead three connected priorities: building the capability and confidence of our managers; shaping our workforce development strategy, including career pathways for colleagues with lived experience; and making sure we're fully prepared for the employment law changes arriving under the Employment Rights Act 2025. This is a genuine change role with a lasting legacy, you'll help leave the organisation stronger, more capable and better equipped for the future.

What you'll be doing

• Providing expert, pragmatic advice on employee relations matters, and leading complex or contentious casework where genuinely necessary, coaching managers to build their own confidence in handling cases
• Keeping the organisation ahead of the phased implementation of the Employment Rights Act 2025, and advising the policy team on the changes required
• Managing the relationship with our external employment law advisers, briefing tightly and translating advice into workable decisions
• Building the capability and confidence of line managers through practical, scenario-based training and coaching through live situations
• Developing a manager toolkit — templates, letters, scripts, decision trees and a clear escalation route
• Owning and developing our workforce development strategy, including a capability framework and career pathways for colleagues with lived experience, from volunteering through to management roles
• Establishing our learning and development framework, including induction, professional accreditation and qualification routes
• Improving consistency and fairness in recruitment and selection, and line managing, supervising and developing the HR Officer
• Providing HR risk reporting to the senior management team and, as requested, to the Board

What we're looking for

• We're interested in hearing from candidates who have:
• Substantial generalist HR experience at HR Manager or senior HR Business Partner level, including sustained periods as the most senior HR person in an organisation or business unit
• Experience of working in a lived experience-led organisation, or one with a significant peer or lived experience workforce
• A proven track record of building line manager capability, coaching managers through live situations rather than doing the work for them
• Experience developing and implementing a workforce development or HR strategy, including competency frameworks and career pathways
• Demonstrable experience of handling complex and contentious employee relations casework end to end, including matters carrying genuine tribunal risk
• Current, working knowledge of UK employment law, including the Employment Rights Act 2025 and its practical implications for employers
• Experience of working in a lean or fast-growing organisation, operating without a large in-house HR or legal team
• Strong influencing skills with senior colleagues, and excellent judgement on confidentiality, conflicts of interest and escalation
• CIPD Level 5 or above, or equivalent demonstrable experience
• Knowledge of the gambling harms, addiction, health or social welfare sectors, experience of a comparable commissioning transition, and experience of interim or fractional assignments would all be advantageous, as would CIPD Level 7 or Chartered MCIPD status.

Context

Childhood First enables children and young people to recover from early life abuse and relational trauma, enjoy life and achieve their potential. We do this through the provision of specialist therapeutic residential care and treatment, together with family and network support.

Purpose

  • Update, maintain and audit the HR database and confidential people records, ensuring information is accurate, up to date and handled in accordance with GDPR requirements.

Charity People is delighted to be partnering with Orbis UK to recruit for their HR and Governance Manager.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced HR professional to join Orbis UK on a 12-month fixed-term contract, helping the organisation strengthen and embed excellent people practices while delivering key HR priorities.

This role is critical to supporting a highly performing group of staff and trustees as they seek to transform lives through the prevention and treatment of blindness. The role sits within the Business Support Team, which is responsible for the day to day running of the organisation and will be crucial in co-creating a revised HR strategy and ensuring that the organisation's compliance with key statutory and regulatory requirements are maintained, working with the Senior Management Team (SMT). The successful postholder will work collaboratively with the Director of Finance and Operations to meet these objectives, but also will have a central role in identifying opportunities for growth within the HR and Governance function to ensure that good practice, wellbeing and compliance work hand in hand with one another and is embedded within the ethos of the organisation for the benefit of its staff and, ultimately, the communities Orbis supports.

The Opportunity

Over the next twelve months, success in this role will mean:

• Completing and progressing key HR priorities across the organisation
• Reviewing, updating and embedding the HR handbook
• Supporting and advising the SMT to develop and deliver a strong HR strategy embedding best practice while continuing to build a positive, inclusive and high performing culture strongly aligned with Orbis' values.
• Support the Director of Finance and Operations to provide high-quality, responsive and effective support to the Orbis Board and its sub-committees.
• Supporting the continued development of an effective in-house HR function
• Provide a responsive problem solving and supportive HR service to colleagues across the organisation.
• Overseeing governance administration where required
• Line manage and work with the Business Support Administrator
• Working in close partnership with the Director of Finance and Operations to deliver both strategic and operational HR priorities

About You

We're looking for someone who can hit the ground running from day one. You'll be a knowledgeable and hands-on HR professional who combines strategic thinking with the ability to deliver operationally. You'll be comfortable managing multiple priorities and bringing structure, pace and confidence to a busy environment.

You'll have:

• Significant experience supporting and developing a HR strategy
• Good knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice
• Experience leading organisational people projects and delivering tangible outcomes
• Experience supporting organisational culture and employee engagement initiatives
• Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
• A pragmatic, solutions-focused approach
• Experience managing or mentoring team members

Desirable

• Undertaking (or qualified) CIPD Level 5 qualification (or equivalent experience)
• Experience at an Executive Assistant level for governance matters

Role purpose
The purpose of this role is to provide expert employment law advice and support to Citizens Advice Lewisham leadership and the wider organisation. The HR Lead will ensure the organisation maintains compliance with all employment law obligations, mitigate legal risks, provide specialist guidance on complex HR matters, and support the development of robust HR policies and procedures. This role will work closely with senior management to ensure best practice in all aspects of employment relations.

Principal tasks and responsibilities

Employment Law Advice & Compliance:

• Provide expert employment law advice to senior management and the board on complex HR matters, including dismissal, redundancy, discrimination, and performance management.
   
• Conduct legal risk assessments on proposed HR actions and advise on mitigation strategies.
   
• Ensure the organisation complies with all relevant employment legislation including the Employment Rights Act, Equality Act 2010, GDPR, and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
   
• Advise on and support the handling of employment tribunal claims and disputes.
   

Employee Relations & Dispute Resolution:

• Lead and conduct disciplinary, capability, and grievance matters, ensuring fair and consistent procedures.
   
• Support management in sensitive HR situations including redundancy, settlement agreements, and dismissals.
   
• Provide mediation advice and support for internal disputes.
   

HR Policy Development & Review:

• Develop, review, and update comprehensive HR policies and procedures to ensure they meet legal requirements and reflect organisational values.
   
• Provide guidance on policy implementation across the organisation.
   
• Conduct legal audits of existing policies and recommend improvements.
  Recruitment & Employment Contracts:
   
• Review and advise on employment contract templates to ensure legal compliance and protection of the organisation.

Data Protection & Safeguarding:

• Advise on GDPR compliance relating to employee data and HR information.
   
• Support safeguarding policies and procedures relevant to employment.

Person Specification
Essential:

• Commitment to Citizens Advice Lewisham's aims and principles.
   
• CIPD Level 5, 6, or 7 qualification in HR or equivalent professional qualification demonstrating advanced HR expertise.
   
• Extensive and demonstrable knowledge of UK employment law and regulatory compliance.
   
• Minimum 5 years' experience in HR, with significant specialism or focus in employment law/relations.
   
• Strong experience in policy development and employment relations.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly.

Position Overview The People & Operations Lead manages the day-to-day execution of internal operations, driving efficiency through automated workflows across HR, finance, and community safeguarding.

Your Responsibilities
