The Fundraising, Communications, Retail Team & Reception

The Team is responsible for fundraising for the charitable work of Mothers’ Union and for communicating our work internally and externally in various formats and media platforms, resourcing dioceses, building membership, and providing a first point of contact for all callers and visitors to Mothers’ Union.

The Role

The successful candidate will primarily work with the Fundraising, Communications, Retail Team and perform Reception duties.

This role is a permanent Contract, 4 days a week . The role is based at our head office in Central London. Since this is a 100% office based role, no home working option is available.

Main Responsibilities 

Reception Duties

• Ensure a high levels of customer service is always maintained.
• To ensure reception area is well-maintained, tidy and presentable at all times.
• Call handling and redirection.
• Greeting visitors; providing face to face information and signposting.
• Greeting conference delegates; ensuring they are signed in, have relevant security badges, and information regarding allocation of meeting rooms and their location.
• To update the meeting rooms’ presentation notices and door signs as necessary.
• To liaise with the Conference & Facilities team to arrange any on-the-spot meeting room requests or other enquiries.
• To receive visitors of Mary Sumner House tenants and informing the relevant tenant of visitor’s arrival.
• Ensure all visitors observe the necessary security and health & safety procedures, including the visitors log.
• Maintain building security by following safety procedures and controlling access via the reception desk.
• Receive, sort and distribute post/deliveries.
• Organise the mailing out of letters and parcels as required.
• To assist the Conference & House Co-ordinator and Conference Facilities Technician when needed.
• In the absence of the Conference & House Co-ordinator, to cover the bookings and administration of meeting rooms, liaise with the facilities team to ensure meeting rooms are set up as required and refreshments and a/v equipment are in place and operational.
• To provide general administrative and coordination support related to the building and teams across the organisation. 

Membership/Supporter Care and Income Processing

• Be the first point of contact for retailby phone, letter or email and responding to these in a timely manner.
• Ensure high levels of customer service are always maintained.
• To acknowledge all fundraising income received from various sources (cheques, cash, online giving).
• To provide retail external fulfilment providers with information and support required to enable them to meet their fulfilment KPI of 1 to 3 working days, reporting any issues to the retail manager.
• To carry out retail administration duties including but not limited to the processing of all information relating to the organisational finance system.

Fundraising, Data and Database

• Support with the administration, booking, planning and delivery of income generating events.
• Produce materials to support community fundraising activity in line with agreed appeals and events.
• To work alongside the Database Manager to maintain the data architecture and quality of the database at all times.

General

• To manage the bookings diary for Mothers’ Union’s displays and banners.
• Provide administrative support to the Director of Fundraising, Communications and Retail around team meetings.
• To actively be involved in any projects undertaken by the team and contribute as required or directed by the Director of Fundraising, Communications and Retail.
• To contribute to team meetings and organisational priorities.
• To provide general administrative and coordination support related to the building and teams across the organisation.

Skills & Experience

• Experience of working within an office or customer service environment is essential.
• Experience of working with Excel is essential.
• Working within the Charity sector is desirable.
• Pleasant and efficient telephone manner. Ability to interact in a friendly and
• Personable manner with external clients, tenants and staff.
• Experience of working at a reception will be an advantage.
• Knowledge/experience of working in a conference facility and advantage.
• Good computer skills and of MS Office software, MS Outlook, Teams and Zoom.
• GCSE or equivalent passes in English and Mathematics.

CONTEXT OF THIS ROLE:

At Purposeful, communications is political. It is how we amplify girls’ voices, sharpen feminist narratives, and push back against regressive agendas. The Communications Director will sit at the heart of this work - shaping and delivering a bold communications strategy aligned with Purposeful’s vision, mission, and growth.

This role leads the stewardship of Purposeful’s voice, visual identity, and storytelling practice, ensuring that everything we produce - whether op-eds, reports, campaigns, or digital content - carries our politics with clarity and conviction. The Communications Director will work closely with the Co-CEOs and across all Purposeful teams, including Advocacy, grant-making, Learning & Insights, Programmes, and Resource Mobilisation, to amplify girls’ organising, showcase our impact, and influence the broader philanthropic and activist ecosystem.

This is both a strategic and hands-on role, requiring a deep commitment to feminist movements, an instinct for storytelling as political practice, and a proven track record of positioning organisations on the global stage.

SCOPE OF WORK

1. Communications Strategy & Leadership

• Lead on delivery and implementation of a new communications strategy, building on 2025 planning foundations.

• Work closely with the Co-CEOs and director team to horizon scan and adapt strategy in response to organisational vision and external landscape.

• Provide leadership to a small team of staff and consultants (designers, digital specialists, artists) and work collaboratively with partner communications leads on joint campaigns and initiatives.

• Meticulously manage and forecast the communications and editorial budget, ensuring value for money and strong planning.

• Track and analyse content performance, using insights to refine reach and engagement.

2. Storytelling & Content Development

• Oversee the creation of compelling storytelling content that highlights Purposeful’s impact, amplifies girls’ and young feminists’ voices, and influences funders.

• Lead editorial planning and content workflows, balancing evergreen storytelling with crisis-response or time-sensitive outputs.

• Oversee production and capture of content from live and digital events (webinars, IG Lives, panels, etc.).

• Coordinate brand refresh projects, including a website refresh, and strengthen Purposeful’s digital visibility with a focus on graphic-led content across social platforms.

3. Writing & Editorial Oversight

• Review and edit all external content to ensure quality, editorial standard, and alignment with Purposeful’s voice and values.

• Write op-eds, blogs, social media posts, campaign messaging, press materials, and executive summaries.

• Collaborate with colleagues in Learning & Insights to integrate data into storytelling and publications.

• Edit and manage the production of publications and reports, commissioning artists and graphic designers as needed.

• Provide editorial oversight for media projects, including radio, film, and animation.

4. Media Engagement & Positioning

• Cultivate strong relationships with international, regional, and local media outlets.

• Proactively position Purposeful in global and regional conversations, ensuring girls’ and feminist movements’ voices are at the centre.

• Lead on preparing and supporting spokespersons, including Co-CEOs and external partners, for media engagement.

• Design and execute media strategies for key campaigns, events, and publications.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Experience & Skills

• Proven experience developing and delivering communications strategies aligned with organisational goals.

• Demonstrated leadership in managing small teams and consultants.

• Strong hands-on skills in digital communication tools (e.g., Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe, basic video editing).

• Extensive experience in content planning and editorial workflows.

• Strong published track record (op-eds, blogs, media features) and evidence of positioning organisations in the public spotlight.

• Excellent writing and editing skills, with experience commissioning and managing creative contributors.

Job Summary

Advance’s Minerva service works with women and young women and girls involved in the Criminal Justice System offering safe, targeted support and advocacy to women to help them address their complex needs in relation to the 9 pathways to offending, such as substance misuse and financial difficulties, aiming to reduce re-offending, encourage desistance amongst repeat offenders, and empower women to live safe, crime free lives.

Working as a Service User Engagement Lead you will be responsible for supporting the operational delivery of our service user engagement programme that will be a part of the Minerva service across London, including leading a team of CJS community champions and ambassadors and supporting in the oversight and delivery this programme across our 3 criminal justice services. In addition, this role requires you to build effective relationships with the criminal justice teams across London, and the regions alongside our partners and service users.

An integral part of the Service User Engagement Lead role will include delivering planned monthly supervision and ad-hoc supervision and having oversight of safeguarding and risk management for the CJS champions and ambassadors that you are working alongside. You will support the Senior Service Manager and Service Managers in delivering key information to keyworkers, in staff meetings and in day-to-day interactions to help promote the service user engagement programme.

You will lead your team and service while working collaboratively with fellow Advance managers and teams, external agencies and key stakeholders across London to provide a consistent and holistic service.

Key responsibilities and duties

• Support the recruitment, onboarding, and exit processes for champions and ambassadors including processing checks and welcome packs. Creating and supporting a positive culture of CJS Champions and ambassadors within the service
• To ensure the voice of service users is heard, valued and have influence throughout all areas of services, development design and delivery
• Supporting the CJS champions and ambassadors in post with their professional development
• Support with coproduction of projects across sites including coproduction space and service user activities, representing the views and opinions of those who access our services by leading on service user board meetings, focus groups and training sessions.
• Oversight of the welfare and wellbeing of CJS Champions and ambassadors
• Embed processes that enable you to engage with those who access our services, by listening to their views and asking for their feedback. Provide feedback and updates to those who access our services informing them of any changes and decisions.

You are an organised and empathetic individual with experience in supporting service user involvement and champion/ambassador programmes. You’re confident managing the full lifecycle of engagement - from recruitment and onboarding to professional development and exit processes - ensuring safeguarding and data protection protocols are followed at all times.

You have a strong understanding of co-production principles and are passionate about ensuring the voices of those with lived experience are heard, valued, and embedded in service design and delivery.

Your ability to build positive relationships enables you to effectively support the welfare and wellbeing of community champions and ambassadors, while also engaging wider staff and community networks to improve services.

The Counter-Trafficking Department operates within HBF’s vibrant, multi-disciplinary team.
