Chapter One is a dynamic, growing charity with a vision of a world in which all children have the literacy skills needed to thrive. Our mission is to close the reading gap by providing children with one-to-one support at the time they need it most. We work in eleven areas/regions of the UK and will support 3250 children in 2024-25.

Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme pairs struggling five to seven-year old (KS1) readers with reading support volunteers who are working professionals. The volunteer ask is very focused: readers commit 30 minutes a week to read with a child using a bespoke digital platform for an entire academic year. The results are transformative, boosting children's reading confidence and ability.

From a school perspective, online reading volunteers provide direct, meaningful literacy support for up to 10 pupils per class. The programme is particularly suitable for communities where it might be challenging to find parents and other volunteers who can commit to physically visiting schools to boost reading.

Job Summary

Chapter One is seeking a Birmingham/West Midlands Programme Manager from September 2024 who is an excellent communicator and is able both to motivate and support schools and teachers to implement our online reading volunteers programme, and also to ensure that the programme’s impact and benefit to disadvantaged communities is maximised throughout the academic year.

The post is ideal for someone looking for part-time, flexible, term-time only work from a home base and who is able to travel frequently around the Birmingham and West Midlands area. The postholder will be joining a team of established Programme Managers (also part-time) who work in different parts of the UK and will need to have some flexibility to work additional hours during busy autumn months, and conversely to work fewer hours during quieter periods of the year.

Key Responsibilities:

• Effectively explain Chapter One’s online reading volunteer programme and its benefits to school leaders and teachers

• Install, setup and maintain Chapter One equipment in participating classrooms

• Fully understand the operation of the Chapter One platform and database and communicate this to others

• Organise and conduct initial teacher training and follow-up

• Ensure a smooth initial launch of Chapter One’s programme in every classroom

• Liaise with colleagues performing technical and volunteer support roles

• Through regular visits to/contact with schools, provide on-going embedded professional learning and support to teachers throughout the year as needed

• Proactively monitor classroom adherence/fidelity to the Chapter One model, including systematic review of data reports and volunteer feedback, taking proactive action to resolve problems that arise

• Analyse and manipulate data (largely in Google sheets) to produce reports and identify trends

• Create monthly data summaries for all participating classrooms

• Lead annual review meetings for senior leadership at participating schools

• Support programme monitoring, evaluation and research as required

• Coordinate in person and virtual school ‘visits’ of volunteer teams to classrooms where necessary

• Liaison with corporate partners as required

• Weekly communication and status updates with Senior Programme Manager(s) and wider team

• As a new school year approaches, secure commitments from returning schools and find and target new schools to join Chapter One’s programme

Role Requirements:

Essential

• Highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
• Proven track record of working at a senior level in education, project management or a related field
• Proven strength in both written and verbal communication
• Highly IT literate, with excellent computer skills, able to troubleshoot software issues and adept with Google suite

Fundraising Manager

£38,000 – £41,000 FTE dependent on experience. Reporting to the CEO. Four days, based at Jecca’s House, Chipping Campden.

Responsibilites:

Fundraising – General 

• To deliver a continuous fundraising operation to meet the short, medium and long-term revenue needs of the charity as determined by the CEO and Board of Trustees 
• Establish and maintain positive relationships across the organisation and an in-depth understanding of the charity’s needs and priorities to ensure your fundraising activity contributes positively 
• Development and maintenance of key resources to support our fundraising activity, including case for support, programme schedule and budgets 
• To develop corporate sponsorship proposals and be prepared to respond promptly to funding offers and opportunities 
• To steward regular donors, ensure they receive appropriate thanks and are kept informed
• Develop strategy to increase number of regular donors through the implementation of a regular giving programme 
• Grow and manage the regular donors’ scheme, Payroll Giving, In-Memory giving, and appeals, contributing to the overall fundraising strategy. 
• Champion the use of data and insight to drive regular giving, utilising database (Beacon) for effective prospect and donor management 
• Monitor, evaluate, and forecast campaign performance, ensuring targets are met and providing reports as required 
• Spotting fundraising opportunities and raising awareness of the CHNs work 

Fundraising – Trusts & Foundations 

• Researching fundraising opportunities which are likely to fund the work of CHN, writing compelling grant applications and building and managing a new business pipeline to deliver year-on-year growth in Trust and Foundations Fundraising income 
• Cultivate relationships with prospects and identify appropriate projects or areas of CHN’s work to meet their criteria, developing tailored, persuasive funding proposals 
• Deliver first-class grant management – taking responsibility for all requirements of funders including impact reporting, financial monitoring and reporting 
• Ensure robust and practical monitoring and evaluation plans are in place to demonstrate the impact of grants you manage and report effectively to funders 

Relationship Management 

• Provide excellent stewardship and supporter care to regular donors 
• Produce and deliver tailored engagement plans to deepen and grow CHN donor relationships
• Build and maintain strong internal relationships across the charity to ensure the delivery of CHN’s obligations to our funders 
• Represent CHN at events and networking opportunities as required 

Events 

• Create plan and oversee and work events with the help of a Fundraising/Community Engagement Assistant 
• Line manage Fundraising/Community Engagement Assistant. 

General 

• Manage and provide relevant training for the Fundraising/Event Assistant/Officer 
• Work with the Marcomms Manager and the finance team on the annual fundraising planning process to produce effective budgets and strategies to achieve income targets across all revenue streams 
• Create and manage the community engagement strategy and annual plan to maintain and further raise the profile of the charity while protecting brand by acting as the ‘brand guardian’ 
• Ensure that all activity is compliant with policies and procedures 
• Actively keep current with trends in fundraising

Person Specification: 

• Proven track record in developing and implementing successful fundraising strategies and campaigns, ideally with at least 3 years experience in the charity sector or demonstrate they have transferrable skills to move into the charity sector. 
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as the necessary with the nature of the job. 
• Demonstrated ability to raise substantial fundraised income and achieve targets 
• Effective stakeholder management skills, both internally and externally, previous experience of managing client relationships 
• Experience in budget management, reporting, and forecasting 
• Proficient research and project management skills

Community Fundraising and Communications Engagement Assistant

£22,500 to £26,000 (FTE dependent on experience). Responsible to the Fundraising Manager and Marcomms Manager. Two days per week (worked over three days if preferable. Based at Jecca’s House

Responsibilities:

• Assist in the creation, planning, setting up and working at fundraising and community awareness events 
• Face to face community work in the form of hosting coffee mornings and fundraising/engagement events 
• Face to face collection of raffle prizes etc within our communities 
• Poster erection and flyer distribution 
• Recording data from events 
• Work closely with both managers in the MARCOMMS team 

MARCOMMS/Fundraising – General

• Help with the community engagement strategy and annual plan to maintain and further raise the profile of the charity while protecting brand by acting as the ‘brand guardian’

Person Specification 

• You will be highly organised, used to working in a fast-paced and autonomous environment and need to be able to plan ahead. 
• You will be proactive, flexible, creative, resilient and able to plan ahead.
• Flexibility is key as this role will require evening and weekend work, time will be given in lieu for hours worked in this situation 
• Computer literate as there will be database and design tools such as Canva to use 
• A team player as you will work with the Fundraising Manager and Communications Manager. Prioritisation is second nature.
• You will be confident using social media, and objective and flexible in the way you use the tools and platforms available. 
• Experience using CRMs is desirable but not essential. 
• This role can be physical – the successful candidate will be involved in setting up and closing of events which may entail some heavy moving and carrying. 

Experience

An exciting Café Manager position has opened at our Yorkshire Cancer Research Centre, which houses a fully integrated Cancer Rehabilitation Centre, Shop, Donation Centre, Office, and our first-ever Café, named Café Hornbeam. 

We are looking for an experienced Café Manager who will provide excellent customer service, prepare delicious food, and create a warm and welcoming space, inspiring their Deputy Café Manager and team of employees and volunteers to do the same. This role will be accountable for the overall management of the Café, including process and policy adherence and development, and Food Safety. 

Specifically, you will: 

• Uphold and manage café operating procedures and policies, including Food Safety, Allergens, Health and Safety and Trading Standards.

• Manage the product mix, introducing new products where appropriate and maximising profit margins.

• Identify appropriate food and drinks suppliers and build and manage supplier relationships.

• Maintain an up-to-date awareness of developments within the café/food service industry to make or recommend appropriate changes to the delivery of café services and products.

• Ensure the café is presented to the highest standards with attractive merchandising of food and drinks. 

• Effectively manage time to work alongside the team, whilst completing managerial duties.

• Plan and oversee the implementation of new menus, specials, and food and drink related offers.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) is the corporate foundation of Thomson Reuters, the global news and information services company. As an independent charity we work to advance media freedom, foster more inclusive economies, and promote human rights. We combine our unique media development and legal services to drive systemic change through news, capacity strengthening, free legal assistance, and convening initiatives.

TRF provides a Secretariat function to the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC). The MFC is a partnership of 50 countries from six continents working together to advocate for media freedom and the safety of journalists at home and abroad. The MFC works closely with civil society and a panel of legal experts, among others, to promote media freedom through a range of activities – including public and private diplomacy to support journalists at risk, coordinated action through embassies, events and the promotion of legal reforms. The MFC was established in 2019 while the Secretariat was established in 2022. More information about the MFC can be found here.

The MFC Secretariat plays a central role in maximising the impact of the Coalition. It does this in four areas:

• Administration and operations: delivering specific activities including events and briefings; supporting and coordinating responses to cases of concern (in which journalists and news organisations are facing threats to their reporting); supporting embassies to act on media freedom; organizing meetings and maintaining the MFC’s network of contacts;

• Communications: communicating the MFC’s activities and impact externally, via website, social media and mainstream media coverage; supporting public-facing events; keeping the MFC’s network informed about activities and opportunities to take action;

• Policies and strategy: ensuring policies and processes are in place to facilitate an efficient, effective and responsive coalition; supporting strategic decision making; monitoring the latest developments in the media freedom context;

The Secretariat is supported by grants from Global Affairs Canada and the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office.

We are seeking a creative and resourceful Communications Manager to join our team. You will lead on the Secretariat’s communications function, both internally and externally, and will implement (and potentially improve on) our existing communications strategy. For the MFC, effective communications are not only about demonstrating the Coalition’s impact, they are also a way of encouraging and inspiring MFC member countries and their embassies to take action on media freedom. This means the Coalition’s communications are an essential component of its pathway to impact.

You will be required to engage with government representatives, diplomats, NGO leaders and some of the world’s finest legal practitioners as part of this role. You will look across the Coalition’s work and develop relationships with member countries and their embassies to identify human-centred stories that showcase the MFC’s work. The ideal candidate will be skilled at turning issues into stories and comfortable with taking the initiative and taking ownership of this area of the Secretariat’s work.

The role is based in Canary Wharf in London. The role is full time and you would be expected to attend TRF’s offices two or more days per week.

This is a 21-month fixed-term contract, starting 1 July 2024 or earlier, depending on availability. The contract may be extended beyond March 2026, conditional on further funds being secured for the Secretariat’s continued operation.

Some travel is anticipated as part of this role.

About The Role

As the Communications Manager you will:

• Research, develop, edit and write communications materials including impact stories and case studies for the MFC’s website and potentially other platforms, using multimedia options where appropriate

• Lead on the implementation of the MFC’s communications strategy, potentially making improvements to this, and tracking key performance indicators accordingly

• Manage the MFC’s website and social media channels (currently focused on Twitter/X) and monitor analytics/produce reports; manage upgrades to the MFC website in collaboration with TRF colleagues

• Curate and produce the MFC’s monthly network newsletter, which is sent to all MFC members and stakeholders

• Organise MFC events, online or in-person, and secure engaging speakers to feature in them

• Plan the MFC’s communications activities, taking account of communications opportunities such as anniversaries and international days

• Promote and maximise the impact of joint statements by MFC member countries, and monitor their impact

• Produce resources for member governments and their embassies, helping them to communicate on key media freedom issues

• Build relationships with media freedom organisations and networks to ensure wider communications reach and opportunities to collaborate

• Identify opportunities to feature the MFC within national/regional/international media as appropriate and build relationships to facilitate this

• Organise events (online or in-person) in collaboration with other members of the team, including developing content, finding speakers, and event coordination

About You

To be our Communications Manager, you will likely have:

• Solid experience in a communications role, producing communications outputs as part of a communications strategy

• Ability to write clear, concise and engaging copy with excellent attention to detail

• A diplomatic approach, including the ability to see issues from others’ perspectives and to spot and mitigate potential risks

• Ability to forge trusted relations with a wide range of cross-sector stakeholders

• Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines

• Fluency in English; other languages desirable but not necessary

It would be useful if you also have:

• Understanding of, or interest in, media freedom issues

• Experience of working with government officials (at any level)

The Role 

The role of Shop Manager involves actively running our new shop in Hull and implementing processes and ways of working.

As our Shop Manager, you will manage the day-to-day operation of the shop including managing a Deputy Shop Manager and team of volunteers, ensuring accurate accounting and handling of assets, delivering high standards of customer service, and adhering to all charity policies and procedures.  
 

Specifically, you will: 

• Manage and be accountable for implementing and complying with agreed shop operating policy and standards including Health and Safety and Trading Standards.

• Be responsible for attracting and recruiting a team of new volunteers, ensuring they are well trained and take every effort to create a welcoming and happy environment.

• Ensure accurate accounting and handling of assets (items donated and money received).

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

The Task Ahead: Finance Manager

As The Difference moves from its early start-up phase into the delivery of our 2025-30 strategy, our programmes and sector-influencing work are expanding to reach more schools and to deepen our impact. Alongside this growth, our team - and the operational function which supports them - is also growing.

As Finance Manager, you will be a key member of the Finance & Operations team. You will hold end-to-end responsibility for the finance function, from reconciliations to budgeting. You will decide where and how our existing processes could be improved, as well as developing new systems that will underpin our work as a larger and more established charity. You will be supported by the Director of People, Finance & Operations, as well as our external auditors.

Areas of Responsibility

The Difference is looking for a Finance Manager to lead our finance function in the following ways:

• Oversee our internal bookkeeping, payment, and accounting processes, and improve these systems ongoingly.

Why Work for The Difference?

Schooling isn’t working for the children who need it most. Every week in England 109 children – equivalent to three full classrooms – are permanently excluded. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the pandemic, school suspensions have risen significantly, as has persistent absenteeism. 1 in 5 children are missing more than 10% of their time in school. Children who are excluded or persistently absent are much more likely to already be experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. They are more likely to live in poverty, have additional learning needs, suffer mental health challenges, or experience a lack of safety outside school. Certain ethnicities are also disproportionately affected, notably Gypsy Roma Traveller and black Caribbean children. 

Exclusion and high rates of absence can have a dramatic effect on life chances. The Difference believes that children and young people deserve better and that the education system has to change.

Our Organisation 

The Difference is a young education charity, founded to change the story on lost learning.  By 2030, we want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable. The Difference was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.

The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

This role will lead our work making sure these protected areas, our best places for birds and wildlife, continue to be properly protected, monitored, and managed.It will also lead our work to make sure these places are bigger, better, and more joined up in future, helping nature’s recovery and tackling climate change.

About this role:

This role will lead the development of RSPB Scotland policy positions and advocate them effectively to decision makers at a senior level, influencing government policies and legislation to strengthen and deliver better outcomes for nature through networks of protected areas across Scotland. You will also play a key role in protected sites policy development and advocacy, working directly with government, public bodies, and businesses, as well as with RSPB colleagues and our partners across the UK. CVAA UK is a membership organisation supporting not-for-profit adoption agencies across the UK who specialise in finding homes for children in care. Over 3000 children in the UK need adoption each year because they cannot remain at home or with family members. The CVAA Practice Programme delivers 30 or more online courses each year to those working in the sector, primarily social workers. The programme has developed a strong reputation for attracting a range of subject experts to deliver cost effective, engaging and useful training. Job description

We’re looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Senior Development Manager to identify new funding opportunities and develop high quality funding proposals that generate income for CSE’s work in line with CSE’s strategy and objectives. The successful candidate will nurture new and existing partner, client, and funder relationships.

Pay and conditions

• The role is full-time, 37.5 hours per week (minimum of 30 hours to be considered for the right candidate).
• The starting salary for the role will be grade H £41,802 - £50,071
• Flexible, hybrid working permitted for this role with a minimum of two to three working days presence in the office expected.

Specific responsibilities

An applicant appointed to the role will be expected to:

• Work effectively with others to develop funding proposals for CSE projects.
• Lead the response to competitive Invitations to Tender, which require a specific and timely response to a client’s brief and the ability to highlight and sell relevant CSE strengths and expertise.
• Support our development process by giving direction, supervision, and support to all contributing staff.
• Work with delivery teams and colleagues to set project budgets, costing work accurately using CSE’s development and financial tools.
• Ensure effective set up of new projects and facilitate the handover when a project bid has a successful outcome.
• Ensure appropriate quality checks are carried out on all proposals.

All CSE staff receive training and are given study time to complete the NEA City & Guilds in Energy Awareness.

Essential attributes for this role include:

• Minimum Maths and English GCSE
• Extensive experience in a project development or fundraising role with a proven track record of securing funding for projects or services.
• Familiarity with project management practices and systems.
• A commitment to CSEs work and charitable mission.
• The ability to construct clear and effective project proposals and tender documents.
• Strong communication skills.
• Good administrative skills with a strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Self-motivated with a flexible attitude and a proven ability to manage own time and multitask.
• Empathy towards the challenges people face and communities face on their journey to net-zero.
• A general understanding of sustainable energy, fuel poverty and climate change.
